Sweeney coming up in September?
QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 09:37 PM) The difference in defense is too slight for the money he'd make [$2.2 mill this yr and likely to get more as a FA]. The sox would be better off letting Sweeney progress in LF than spend money on a guy like Byrnes who may hurt the sox w/ his glove more than he'd help hit vs LHP. Who's out there? Usually I'd agree with you that it's easy to find that righty platoon outfielder, but judging by this year, it seems like it's impossible to find that type of player. I'm actually coming around to the idea of getting Mathews Jr. to play LF next season (and then move to RF in 2008).

Sweeney coming up in September?
QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 09:22 PM) Energy is one thing. Talent is another. Byrnes is a hack defensive OFer, that turns routine plays into highlight reel catches. I'm not sure he's better than Ozuna in LF. People rightfully complain about the Sox OF defense. Byrnes won't help. Byres isn't a great defensive player, but he's at least serviceable out there. That's a lot more than you can say about Ozuna and Pods. However, I don't think he'll be as cheap of an option as many people think. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a 2 yr, 9 million dollar contract this offseason.

Sweeney coming up in September?
QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 09:11 PM) No Byrnes. He's not worth it for under $1 mill let alone his salary He'd easily be our 2nd best overall outfielder this season. He has the type of energy that this team is lacking this season (besides Ozuna).

Sox @ Detroit
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 06:44 PM) There are going to be a few idiots who blame Williams, but if the Sox fail to make the post season, IMO its ALL on the players and staff. Williams built a WS club, and ADDED to it in 06. Anything can happen from year to year, but we should be talking about setting up the playoff rotation right now. Instead we are talking about how are starters make way too much money for the efforts they have been giving.... The ONLY real complaint I have regarding KW is his inability to add a 4th outfielder (righty) to the team this year that can play LF/CF. I hated the Vazquez deal, but I can completely understand why the deal was made. As someone else said, we can find about 20 other members of the organization to complain about before KW's name would even come up.

Knights can clinch tonight
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 05:10 AM) I heard Flash will be there as well. Make sure they meet up. I thought Flash has to be 100 yards from Broadway at all times?

Sox lose game 1 to Tigers
QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 05:07 AM) I kind of see that, but without Liriano they lost half of the reason that they got so hot, and now there left to one incredible pitcher and a surging offense to carry them which is pretty much what we have anyways(if you combine some guys they probably equal santana eventually), so outside of head-to-head matchups I don't think its time to panic Good post....we need to find a way for our offense to start clicking again. It's amazing the production that the Twins are getting from so many no-named guys like Tyner, Bartlett, Punto, Redmond, etc.

2006 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 04:58 AM) We should trade for him. Ozzie would have let him at least stay for the 5th to qualify for the win. That's tremendous!

Sox lose game 1 to Tigers
QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 04:59 AM) "We have enough veteran leadership to know to tip your hat to that guy, but tomorrow is another day, and we'll come out ready to play. Just by the way we've played this team this year is confidence in itself." Well, that's 4 times now out of our last 5 losses where we tipped our cap to the starting pitcher. Pretty soon, we need our offense to step up and put up some more runs no matter who's on the mound. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 05:01 AM) my point was that if inconsistency has given us a lead, why will inconsistency suddenly blow it? I think people are worried that we'll continue to play .500 ball the rest of the way (like we've been doing since the ASB), and the Twins will continue to play at such a high rate.

Sox lose game 1 to Tigers
QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 04:51 AM) but this board is acting like its the apocalypse, when its not. The team has shown that it will not be consistent, but if inconsistency has brought us to where we are now, why should we have any reason to believe we will suddenly collapse and fall out of contention just because we aren't playing better than we did recently? I went back and read every post, and in this three page thread, there was only one comment that said the division is over. There was not a single post that said this team has no chance to make the playoffs.

A plea to White Sox fans
QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 04:38 AM) Obviously you guys are right, the mighty Twins are headed straight to the World Series and the White Sox are the only team with real weaknesses. I honestly can't thank you all enough for pointing this out to me. How blind I've been! Now I can stop following this team and stop posting on this website, and maybe do something more worthwhile with the last couple of months of my summer Apologies for all the wasted time, mods please delete this thread While you are at it, please delete my account I'm pretty f***ing sure I'm never coming back to this place We're not allowed to point out inaccurate statements? All I was saying is that if we're going to say negative things about the Twins, Carlos Silva isn't a reason to bash them right now. I wasn't in this thread when we were discussing the negatives about the other teams. My personal opinion is that the only team that matters to us right now is the Twins. The Twins have been playing excellent baseball for about the last 70 games, and that's why they've gone from a team 10 games below .500 to a team 20 games above .500. That's quite the turn-around, and they're firing on all cylinders. We've lost 5 of our last 6 games to them, so we need to find a way to compete with them in the final 2 series of the year against them.

A plea to White Sox fans
QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 04:20 AM) Dude, we get it, you missed the point of the thread. Two words - Carlos Silva Yeah, Carlos Silva is so bad, the Twins have only managed to win 6 of his last 7 starts. If Don Cooper was evaluating him, he'd say you can't complain about him. Silva has given up 21 ER over his last 39 innings. Wouldn't that make him our 2nd best starter over that stretch?

Chris Young Called Up
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 03:18 AM) I'm gonna barf the next time somebody claims Kenny traded a top 20 prospect in hopes of getting back a typical #5 starter -- especially one that makes as much paper as Javy does. Preach on

aaron rowand back in chicago
Ron Santo was on the radio, and he guaranteed there must be something seriously wrong with him. Hopefully he's ok, as I don't think Santo knows much about leg injuries. Sprained ankle for Rowand

Sox lose game 1 to Tigers
Quick stat I heard: When Podsednik swings and puts the first pitch of the AB into play, his batting average is about .140. That's ungodly low.

A plea to White Sox fans
QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 01:51 AM) I'd like to know what those who are complaining about fans who recognize that this team has problems mean by "support your team". Is mindless cheerleading "support"? Is that what good fans do? I think good fans look at the team honestly, recognize its strengths and weaknesses and discuss them freely. I do get quite the laugh reading this, and then seeing your sig.

Sox lose game 1 to Tigers

Sox lose game 1 to Tigers
This team looks absolutely fatigued. I can't even begin to count how many foul balls our hitters have hit to the opposite field. The bat speed is slowing down right now, and this is the point of the season where the adrenaline of being in a pennant race has to give you that extra boost. Unfortunately, it's nowhere to be found with our guys right now. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 01:49 AM) If what Melton is saying is true, how long has his back been giving him problems? If it's been a while, I'll be pissed beyond belief that we didn't get B-mac stretched out a longgggggg time ago. Where was this problem in his last start against the Tigers?

Sox lose game 1 to Tigers
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 01:42 AM) I think some heads have gotten rather large because of what was accomplished last year. I wish I could find the quotes from Buehrle and Crede on Friday before that first game against the Twins. They were acting like it was April or May. Buerhle said it wasn't a big series, and T. Hunter said the Twins were so amped up for it that he was nervous they'd be too intense.

Official "Squared Circle" Thread
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 01:09 AM) Jeff Hardy on Raw...seizmic waves of the overweight emo girls marking out can be felt across the globe. Not to hijack this great thread, but I just want to propose my theory comparing Jeff Hardy with Scott Podsednik.

Game thread Sox(73-50) at Detroit(79-45)
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 01:32 AM) Now this is frustrating. Now we start hitting the ball the other way, and back up the middle. Why do we wait until the 9th inning to actually hit. Cause we're facing Todd Jones.

Game thread Sox(73-50) at Detroit(79-45)
This has been a very good game thread tonight, considering how bad the team is playing right now. Once the good posters start joining the thread, we might be able to discuss this team more efficiently.
