QUOTE(ptatc @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 02:19 AM) I don't believe Fehr is the puppet. Like Marvin Miller, the head of the union convinces the players this is the right thing and they follow. Remember when the Sox as a team were going to skip the drug tests to make sure the minimum amount of negatives were found? Fehr went to Az and convined them not to do this because it may hurt other players. He has a great deal of power and the players as a group listen. I truly believe most players believe that tougher testing would be good but the union leaders have fought against it. Since the players, vote the guy in, I agree with Steff on this. It'd be pretty easy to replace him if they actually wanted a different style.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 12:44 AM) To your first point. No they haven't killed anyone or have roid rage in public. But Steroid abuse will do incredible, harmful effects to their bodies. Cancer, Liver Damage, Heart Damage...etc. But then again as you said: who cares how much they did? If someone wants to inject something into their body, as long as it doesn't affect me, they should be allowed to. I guess we should adopt this same attiyude twoard other drugs too? Heroin? Go on kids, shoot up, as long as it doesn't effect me. Crack? Knock yourselves out. I don't care, as long as you have fun! Now, you're second point: It's like those parents in the 80's who sued Judas Priest for their kids' suicides. Umm...this is a comparison without any basis. These kids committed suicide due to depression resulting from steroid withdrawl, among other side-effects from the abuse. Unlike your very poor analogy to the heavy metal/suicide debate, that had no connection to those deaths. If you really don't care, stop posting in this thread. But your statements are uninformed, heartless and rather selfish. These people are killing themselves by illegally abusing drugs in high doses and they have influenced hundreds of kids to do the same, but if they hit homeruns...you dont care, because you're entertained. :headshake I agree w/ you. But Barry Bonds has made very similar statements -- it's not that rare a perspective.

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Mar 18, 2005 -> 12:13 AM) Right now the Chairman is drilling one of the guys about the language of the agreement. I don't remember who this guy is he is questioning though...anyone help with this? Good enough. Sounds like it's gotten too slow to care. Are the management people just being good enough weasels that there's not much to say? Or have even the congressmen gotten tired?

What is going on, btw? I don't even know who's speaking.

QUOTE(longshot7 @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 11:59 PM) But it's totally subjective - and dependent on what athlete, what drug, and the dosage. All I'm saying is that not all steroids are bad - again, not all athletes abuse steroids by taking them - did McGwire or Bonds or Canseco - I don't see them having roid rage and killing people. But again - who cares how much they did? If someone wants to inject something into their body, as long as it doesn't affect me, they should be allowed to. I'm sorry for those parents that lost their children - but to blame steroids for their deaths (which were suicides, not overdoses) is failing to take responsibility for their own shortcomings as parents. Why didn't they teach their kids different? It's like those parents in the 80's who sued Judas Priest for their kids' suicides. It's just representative of what's taking place in our society with people refusing to take responsibility for their own shortcomings. Maybe this is just me -- I don't have any problem with this discussion, but it seems out of place here, as it's not about what's actually going on in the hearings, which is what I'm really interested in right now. I just don't want that part of the thread, the blow-by-blow account, to get lost in this argument. Personally, I wish you'd start a new thread on this. But again, jmho.

I don't understand the big deal about Sosa using a translator. He has LESS of an excuse to play dumb now. His English is pretty good, but not nearly as good as Palmeiro's. It's still his testimony, he's still responsible for it. And we've still got plenty of good reasons to hate the guy.

QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 07:58 PM) 20 minute recess. AKA.. autograph time.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 07:53 PM) Criminal case, witness against himself. They could take the 5th on this question: "During your time as a player did you ever take steriods with Mr. Canseco?" They could not take the 5th on this question: "During your time as a player, did you ever witness another player taking steriods?" The second question there is no way to incriminate themselves, therefore the judge could put them in contempt of court for not answering. SB Right, that's what I was thinking. So McGuire cannot take the 5th on the basis that he may incriminate someone else.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) 5th Amendment: No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. Right, the relevant part is the "witness against himself" part.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 07:42 PM) Mcguire's gonna plead the 5th. He said he wouldn't name names, but you can't plead the 5th except to protect yourself, right?

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 07:38 PM) What's going on? I'm at school and can't listen to anything... I'm on a delay, so I still have Sosa testifying. Canseco already announced that he would take the fifth. Edit: Okay, McGuire's up now.

Vikings signed QB Brad Johnson

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 08:59 PM) What about Jeff Garcia? Did he sign with anyone? Lions, reportedly as Harrington's backup. -

You don't understand, this is only part of the solution... Wait to comment until you see the whole plan... We're trying to create more jobs for Americans...

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Mar 11, 2005 -> 07:18 PM) Although, I worry about the guy who plays Anakin/Darth. He was not a good actor in the last one. Understatement of the year. Even if the rest of it were better, he would have singlehandedly ruined that movie. The last one was such a huge disappointment, I'm not concerned about seeing 3 any time soon.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 06:33 PM) I grew up 5 blocks away from Rainbow Cone, and it's still one of the first places I go to when I go back to visit. Yummm! Lucky. Only place I've ever had it is at Taste. I keep planning on making a trip there when I'm in Chicago in the summer, but then I think to myself, I'm going to drive 45 min each way (at least) for ice cream???

QUOTE(Spiff @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 06:00 PM) I'd say about half those are true of me. They exaggerate some things, like the opera glasses. Pretty good though. Same for me. But I gotta say, it doesn't matter where you're at, IT'S POP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you. Oh, and I love RC. Good pop that.

The NYT article. (Need to register, but it's up on most news sites anyway.) Why? What qualifies him? Bush is nominating a State/Defense Depts lifer, who isn't very well liked internationally b/c of his role in the Iraq war, to a position concerned with development economics. I'm just confused on this one.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 05:01 PM) Now if you want to ignore that (ignorance seems to fit some of you quite well) I thought you were kidding w/ that "intellectual inferiors" crap before, now I'm not so sure. Don't be a jerk, just b/c your word count per post is so high doesn't mean you have any more to say.

QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) Doesn't matter what Kenny wants in regards to Frank. As long as Frank and Jerry are on good terms Frank will be in a Sox uniform. Don't know if I agree with the method, but I love the result!

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 03:09 PM) Taste: Nothing like some 350-lb temporary worker sweating over your over priced turkey leg in 100 degree heat, while fighting through 1 million people, most of whom smell like they haven't showered in a decade. Disagree, I love Taste. It's the only time I get a Rainbow Cone, b/c I'm rarely in Chicago, and even then I'm not going to drive all the way to the sw side for an ice cream. Plus, the concerts were fun when I was in hs.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 03:19 PM) I haven't said I don't think Frank can put up good numbers. I don't know if he can outproduce Konerko. Honestly I think they bring them both back and this is a moot arguement. I just wanted to jump in when I didn't see both sides of an arguement being made. It wasn't fair to diss PK's road numbers, and then not mention Frank's. That is all. Fair enough. I hope you're right about Frank coming back. We've seen in the papers that KW is ready to cut ties w/ Frank at season's end to save $6.5 mil, which would be a colossal misjudgement if he comes back from the injury and plays this year like he did when healthy in 2004. I'm encouraged to hear that Reinsdorf would make a push for Hurt -- even if it is mostly speculation.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 02:54 PM) Past tense. Do you think 2006 Frank will be better than 2006 Paul. That is the question. Is it worth losing Paul Konerko in 2006, so that Frank Thomas will retire with the Sox, even if he can't put up the numbers anymore. We all know Frank's career will blow away anyone since Joe Jackson's untimely departure from baseball. I'm not sure about Frank vs Paulie, it's a close call, but that's largely b/c of injury worries. I don't know why you think Frank can't put up good numbers. Frank still draws 125+ walks in a full season and gets on base at a ridiculously good rate, home and away. That, and he'll still hit for power, though probably only 10-15 hr on the road. Those are great numbers, unless you restrict yourself to the single number, hr on the road.
-
QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 01:19 PM) OK, y'all convinced me JR's a lovable, sentimental fool, who I am certain wants Frank to finish his career in a White Sox uniform and if that means signing an admitted steroid user to a minor league contract, then by golly he will. And Frank will consider that magnanimous gesture in his decision to stay, because he and Giambi are tight, like brothers. Well that's better. Glad you've seen the light. I still don't think the Giambi signing is bad in and of itself, but this does make it a little less surprising.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 16, 2005 -> 01:16 PM) Quibble away, but I did specify a Sox affiliate jersey. Regardless, the post was made in jest. I know, I know.
