  1. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 11:36 PM) Well I guess you are just ignoring that one batter has 13 XBH and the other has 41. I guess 41 and 13 are close. Ummm...Buscher has played in less than 1/2 the games Alexei has. Double his XBH and you get 26. The 15 extra base hits are largely offset by the fact that Buscher would have 2.5 times the number of walks if they played the same number of games. That's why OPS+ is a good measure - it corrects for park effects and the relative value of OBP vs. SLG.
  2. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) How exactly is Buscher = Ramirez. 4 homers to 18. OPS higher for Ramirez. How about the 13 XBH for Buscher and the 41 for Ramirez. Ramirez .300 /.320 /.477 = .797 OPS = 105 OPS+ Buscher .304 / .344 /.409 = .753 OPS = 103 OPS+ Park effects inflate Alexei's numbers + OBP is more valuable than SLG when it comes to scoring.
  3. QUOTE (SoxFanForever @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) In what world is Kubel better than Konerko? Paul has struggled mightily this year. However, I think he has definitely shown that he is a much better hitter than Kubel. Over the course of their careers, Konerko >> Kubel. This year (going into tonight): Kubel: .277 / .340 / .463 - .803 OPS Konerko: .244 / .354 / .415 - .769 OPS
  4. Damn. I wish I had switched over to Bremer and Blyleven to hear their lamentations.
  5. Sox up 2.5....they effectively knock two days off of the calendar. Nice.
  6. Wow...Detroit blew a 2 run lead in the 9th as well. The bullpens in the AL Central are pathetic.
  7. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 10:55 PM) BlackBesty, didn't you saw about a week ago the season was over, and the Sox were just keeping first warm for the Twins? And the Twins absolutely and resolutely refuse to win the division. It's actually remarkable. Had they even played remotely decent ball they'd be 3-4 games in front. Compare the two lineups right now: Span > Cabrera Casilla > AJ Mauer = Dye (more OBP, less power) Morneau > Thome Kubel > Konerko Young > Griffey (the weak griffey we have) Buscher = Ramirez Punto = Swisher Gomez = Uribe (although The Twins' lineup right now is better than the Sox - especially the Sox lineup w/o Konerko - and the pitching probably favors the Twins w/ Liriano (who gagged tonight) and Slowey leading the way. Nathan blew 3 saves...that's the difference right now.
  8. Reyes pwns Martinez, Shoppach and Garko and we are on to the 10th.
  9. QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 10:26 PM) Indians blow 8-1 lead. Nice. Let's hope Cliff Lee can get it done tomorrow. Jiminy Christmas we should have been up 2.5 - effectively crossing 2 days off the calendar - as of tonight. Now its Guardado and Nathan and good night Cleveland. Highly disappointing. This would have been the kind of loss that might have totally knocked the Twins off kilter. Mauer already talked about them "pressing" yesterday. Meanwhile, the Sox have the Fifth Starter Forfeit tomorrow. Events have overtaken my last post. This is what you get when you write a post longer than 20 words.

  11. QUOTE (chimpy2121 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) Well, s***. 8-8. Indians bullpen is worse than the Twins and White Sox bullpens. Come to think of it, the Royals may have the best bullpen in the AL Central to finish up the season. Wow.
  12. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 08:52 PM) I love how, with Lee going tomorrow, (given a win today) Cleveland might sweep Minnesota. Ouch. Quite a jinx. 8-7 Indians, and the Twins have 2 on and 1 out in the top of the 7th. The Twins will never die. I hate those mother truckers, but they never die. Mike Myers-esque.
  13. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) BA better start tonight in CF with Pettite on the mound. And Konerko at 1st, with Swish in LF. Owens in LF, BA in CF, Swish sits according to the Trib. Swish has 1.000 OPS against Pettite, although only in 3 plate appearances (1-3, 2B, GIBP). Konerko hits Pettite well...so does Griffey, who is sitting, Dye hits him well, Cabrera hits him well, AJ hits him well, Uribe meh. Giambia and Damon light up Floyd, although in relatively few plate appearances.
  14. JD with a totally useless swing on 3-1. I mean, get a rip in, JD. So basically, we are going into the last three weeks with OC average, Wise moderately hot, JD cold, Thome average, Ramirez cooled off, AJ cold, Griffey cold, Swisher icy, and Uribe moderately hot. And the worst bullpen since who knows when. Sad prescription.
  15. If someone told me at the beginning of the year that the Sox would be counting on Wise for offense in mid-September, I would have told you I wouldn't be watching the games because they wouldn't mean anything. Weird spot.
  16. DeWayne. Repeat 8th inning of last night, plz. K THX.
  17. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) Why are the Sox using Wasserman so much lately. What's wrong with McDougal ? Where do we start with that one.
  18. QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) Ehren Wasserman in. I'll be shocked if the Yankees don't score this inning. +2. Go Tribe.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 07:40 PM) Must be Steve Howe's kid +7. Me likey.
  20. Catfish Hunter reference!! Drink!! What is our record in games in which Hawk references Catfish Hunter? He mentioned him on Sunday afternoon.
  21. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) Well, we're hitting the ball pretty well. If Buerhle can keep us close maybe we can get a couple to fall in. My thought as well. Problem is that Buehrle is already at 39 pitches through 2 innings. And our bullpen fights fire with fire. I would prefer water.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 02:18 PM) Aaron Poreda is not on the 40 man as far as I can tell. I checked the 40 man roster after I posted that - I was sure he was on the 40 man - and found that I was wrong. If there was a slot on the 40 man, I'd put him on it and put him in the majors. Harrel, too.
