Humber determined to prove himself worthy
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Last sesaon I watched Humbewr take on King Felix in Seattle and match him for 8 innings leaving with the score tied 2-2. I was impressed -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 05:18 PM) I, for one, am truly worried about Konerko's hip hindering his ability to run. He's nothing without his wheels. Yes, he is a speed demon for sure rivaling even Juan Piere and Tim Raines and Lance Johnson

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I applaud Frank Thomas and his take on things. -
Last player manager we had was Don Kessinger I think. That was a different time, but didn't work out well. However, Paulie is aspecial player and man. Maybe one day he wil manage, but I am guessing two more years of playing time and maybe another two as a DH, if he would do that. Hopefully all those yeasr in a Sox uniform

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2012 -> 07:06 PM) That'd be great. Hopefully either that would put us in contention or give us a real shot to trade him. I would not have been sorry to see Dunn, Peavy and Rios gone this off season. Maybe that is wrong on my end and way too critical, but it galls me to see so much money wasted in 2011. Now if these guys turn it around and I believe they all have pride and want to do good then that is a good thing for all of us. They are with the team and all you can ask for is effort and of course 40 homers plus from Dunn

If you say Ricky Henderson was the ideal lead off hitter - you are right. But, guys like him come around just so often so comparing De Aza or any other possible lead off option would not be fair. But, De Aza did earn the chance to at least get the try. I think he has shown through his career he puts up good numbers and just needs to avoid injuries and get the opportunity to play. It will be interesting and hopefully fun to see how he does this year when given a chance to playfull-time. It seems we are quick to use terms like "ideal lead off hitter, etc" but what is the ideal?

QUOTE (MEANS @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 08:44 PM) LOL, if she hadn't just lost her job prior to X-Mas I would have tried to make something happen to get there, trust me it was killing us not being able to go. Lost her job? Dang Republicans

Ventura "Thornton the leader to close"

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 26, 2012 -> 06:23 PM) This has been my stance for a while. Let's just hope that Robin will factor in KW's input and what's best for the organization into his decision-making moreso than Guillen. I think everyone here would agree that the GM and manager should have their own opinions, but at the end of day they should come to some sort of agreement on what the right course of action is. The manager's job isn't always to maximize wins, sometimes it's more important to develop young talent or play a player in hopes of increasing his trade value. I honesty think KW and Robin will be on the page in regard to these types of decisions, which should be a significant improvement from Ozzie. I just find it amazing that our hope is for Sox players to suceed and for us to win so we can get rid of the players -
Reader Columnist: Season 2 A.D. Approaching for Sox

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 26, 2012 -> 10:08 PM) Buehrle - Sale Santos - Reed Quentin - Viciedo Air? Oddly enough our farm system actually fulfilled it's purpose this offseason. Don't know how they'll produce but we replaced those 3 players with REAL damn major league ready prospects. We need to see them produce first. But, isn't that always the case with prospects or replacements in baseball? -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 10:02 PM) brilliant Why thank you! -
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 07:23 PM) I think people make too much of young people doing stupid things. Not saying his behavior was acceptable, but people can change over time and maybe he's finally grown up. None of us really have a clue, but hopefully the Sox did their homework and feel that he's actually matured. Either way, give him a short leash and there's essentially no risk with this signing. No argument here. I have seen a lot of folks in my time that deserved and benefited from a second chance

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 08:02 PM) When your organization lacks as much talent as us, you got to take chances on guys like this. He clearly had some physical tools when he was in the Marlins system (BA Top 100 prospect from 04 to 06) and is still relatively young at 28. The odds are definitely against and it's possible that the shoulder injury has impacted his stuff, but I really see nothing to lose here. If he has attitude problems in Charlotte, then you simply release him. Given our current situation and our history with reclamation projects (both physical and personal), I'm willing to take a gamble on a guy like this. Maybe he has found the light? Forgiveness is divine they say... Anything is possible I guess and it appears he must have been well regarded as a prospect at one time

Ventura "Thornton the leader to close"
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 08:01 PM) I just listened to the Ventura interview. Reading between the lines, I think he's saying Thornton out of courtesy and not to just hand the job to Reed. My feeling is that by the middle of March, Reed will have the closers job. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/?podcast_url=h...mp;dcid=CBS.CHI I don't think that is a good thing for Ventura to be doing, if in fact it is what is between the lines. As the new manager his word must be accepted by the players and be good for something. You don't say one thing to the public and then do something else. Now if Matt fails and Reed can step in that's great, but my guess is the job is Matt's at this point. -
Ventura "Thornton the leader to close"
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think Matt Thornton is to valuable to lose. We need the lefty and if Robin is giving him another chance I think that is great. Regardless if he closed or not Matt Thonton is still a premier lefty reliever. Crain is a set up man and Reed needs the experience still adn I am sure he will get his chances to close as the season goes along -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:52 PM) Kenny should never, ever be blamed for signing Dunn. It filled a serious need while not breaking the bank. The move just didn't work out, but it was totally justified. And he has a chance to redeem himself in 2012. Now if Dunn fails again then we really took it in the shorts with that big 4 year deal -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 08:07 PM) I can't wait for people to say we need to keep Thornton around in order to try and shut down Prince. I don't think the Sox are the losers here, the real losers in this are the Royals. If the Tigers dominate for the next 3-4 years, then the Royals young studs are going to be too expensive to keep around. Not only Thornton but now we should have kept Buerhle -
Maybe he is ready to show us his stuff. Time will tell. I hope so for sure.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 07:44 PM) It's less than a month from spring training. The "Best shape of his life" articles are due right now, and if you're a baseball fan they ought to start getting you excited...because whether or not that's true, it means we're over the hump and there will soon be baseball! I believe you speak the truth Kemo Sabe -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 04:36 PM) For the guy who is pretty much the real face of the organization to say what he said, that really isn't fluff. I'd challenge you to find another announcer who had those kinds of things to say about their own team. Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall and they fired them
-
Fluff- yes. Some interesting takes on 2011 -yes, But the off season usually is fluff and feel good stories. That is normal and just goes to show why baseball is so great. Hopes springs eternal and we are all equal until the end of the first day of the season

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 02:34 PM) They both have three years left. At this point you are trying to recoup your investment under new leadership. They must perform period, or the Sox have no chance of recouping any investment it made in those three. That's the bottom line and only 2012 will tell
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 06:36 PM) Doing so will only create more publicity for him and thus will only make the Sun Times hold onto him longer. Yes exactly. It would be viewed as a Freedom of the Press issue and some folks in the media use that too often to print slander about someone of interest and then bury any retraction in a back page somewhere
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 06:30 PM) We'll know if they call Joe Crede out of retirement. Now wait a minute. We need Crede on the Sox first

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 06:18 PM) More than that, they're going to care next offseason when Josh Hamilton is a free agent. Reading about predictions and projections and saying a $19M salary is justified if you win four games? Did I read that right? What the Rangers paid for Darvish and I am only talking his salary is crazy enough. $51M just to talk to him is crazy cazy. Maybe the Rangers figure they will offset the salary by letting Hamilton walk?
