  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 04:48 PM) You're right, because it's totally irrelevant to project and have some sort of idea how good the team we are cheering for should be this year. Let's just go in blindfolded and assume we're going to win 100 games. Maybe we are just blind to assume anything. I for one don't believe in these projections especially when they make them for 2012 season and it's December for crying out loud. Now if you ASSUME anything please do not include ME in it
  2. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) 175 posts for a Cowley column. The front office should pay the Sun Times to keep him employed. And I hope Coop knows to keep playing the game with Cowley, it is the best pr that a pitching coach could ever hope for. The more Cowley attacks Cooper the more his legend grows with Sox fans. I think it is a commie pinko conspiracy
  3. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 03:50 PM) Finally, something to change the subject around here: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/t...cago-white-sox/ Finally, something to change the subject around here: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/t...cago-white-sox/ QUOTE The Chicago White Sox system continues to be one of the weakest in the Majors. The front office and ownership cannot fault anyone but themselves for failing to invest in the amateur draft or the international market. On the plus side, the organization has lucked into a few interesting prospects like Addison Reed and Dylan Axelrod. Chicago doesn’t have a true No. 1 prospect, although Reed has value as a potential high-leverage reliever who is close to MLB ready – and the recently acquired Nestor Molina has a higher ceiling than most of the existing players in the Sox system. 10. Hector Santiago, LHPBORN: Dec. 16, 1987 EXPERIENCE: 5 seasons ACQUIRED: 2006 30th round – Florida community college 2010-11 TOP 10 RANKING: Off SCOUTING REPORT: It’s amazing the difference a pitch can make. Santiago added a rarely used screwball to his arsenal for the 2011 season and it gave him a much-needed, reliable off-speed pitch. He moved into the starting rotation for the first time in his career and flourished. His fastball sits in the low-to-mid 90s and he also features an occasional slider. YEAR IN REVIEW: Santiago began the season back in high-A for the third straight season but he convinced the minor league staff that a change needed to be made after eight starts. He then made another 15 starts at double-A and received a call to the Majors where he appeared in two games and allowed just one hit in 5.1 innings. YEAR AHEAD: Santiago will probably head to triple-A for a bit but could challenge for a spot in the starting rotation in injuries occur in spring training. He’s a nice insurance policy for 2012 and he could use the time in triple-A to improve his slider. CAREER OUTLOOK: The right-hander has the potential to develop into a No. 4 starter at the big league level – possibly as high as a No. 3 if he learns to rely on his breaking ball a little more. who writes or researches this?
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 04:18 PM) No, you just want Dunn and Rios to be traded and keep everyone you like. As we have said a million billion trillion times, it isnt really possible. You don't undervalue your players anymore than you should over value them. But, if the alternative is to just give them away because of their arbitration or free agent status then I would rather keep them and give it our best shot to compete. If some team wants Danks or Floyd or anyone bad enough then waiting for the right offer is the right way to go. If we aren't going to compete then the desperation moves should be by those that think they can compete and need that one more piece. This could go on till spring training
  5. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 04:16 AM) On a different note, White Sox team as constructed projects for 77 wins. Is JJ Stankevitz new CSN Sox beat writer? Why even start the baseball season? Let's go straight to October 2012
  6. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 04:07 AM) So it's OK to give away our best prospects, but god forbid we ask for top prospects in return. Based on some of the comments about our players I am always surprised on how little we apparently value our own players. Maybe we should just ask for some used balls and bats in return.
  7. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 11:56 PM) The story is at least one pitcher on the staff last year thought Coop was looking out for himself in the last year of his contract and wasn't the 'same old Coop' until he got his extension. Like it or not, that perception is a legit story. The points being made here for and aganst are legit. Just a disagreement about whether it should or shouldn't be a story. Maybe Joe thinks he is an investigative reporter?
  8. QUOTE (Andrew @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) No, you are missing the point. Coop flat out stated that he hasn't had a discussion with Cowley in over 2 years. 2 YEARS!!! How can you report on the conversations that take place between people that you have not even interviewed??? I mean, that's not even having an opinion, that's just flat out bulls***. Missing the point, or the part of the story about Cooper. I thought Cowley was talking to Danks and writing on that talk and it was about Coop?
  9. QUOTE (Cali @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 09:56 PM) I'm talking about MLB.TV specifically since it's cheaper and gives me access to games on my phone and computer as well as through Apple TV onto my flatscreen. But, I'm not well off at all money wise so if I can save $25 a month by not watching a horrible baseball team (even if that team is my favorite) I'm gonna do it. In the end it's just sports, it's not that important to me as, say, paying my bills haha Point well taken
  10. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 09:17 PM) You're missing the point. It's fine to be critical of the Sox organization if enough evidence points in that direction. There are plenty of articles critical of management that I have NO problem with. The reason Cowley is despised is not because he criticizes the Sox, but that his criticism is always informed by his own petty squabbles and allegiances. His opinions are invalid because he can't see through his own distortion. No, I don't think I am missing the point. I agree with what you are saying. The point is that he is a columnist, as has been pointed out here, and they have their take on things and it is jaded in many ways by their allegiances with certain people. I am not sure his opinions are completely invalid though as being right half the time is better than being wrong all the time I guess. I do think he gets a bit to personal and snotty in his columns.
  11. I don't know how Joe Cowley is perceived in Chicago. I gather from fellow Soxtalk folks that he is not well liked. He does seem to like to stir things up a bit, but the questions I have on this Cooper stuff is: Is what John Danks said untrue? Did John Danks deny it or say it was taken out of context? Is it news to baseball fans? Now we have more similar type stories coming out albeit from a different writer. Jake Peavy is not to happy, but he does say he discussed his differences with Cooper. Is that news? Is it true? The difference to us here might be if one appears more critical of the Sox organization than the other. I have said it before and that's it is no secret there were differences and controversies last season internally. Maybe the problem is we don't like to see dirty laundry aired in public? Colwy takes a negative spin on things, but if ther ammo is there I guess he and other writers will take it, load it up in a story and shoot it. The team and organization needs to quit bashing itself and get back to being a winner. Maybe what w are seeing is just part of the healing process internally?
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 11:55 PM) Unless the next coaching staff can undo the damage done by Walker and Ozzie, the answer will be yes. I think he can get back on track. Too much talent and a strong desire to make it work - not to
  13. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 08:20 PM) I'm getting MLB.TV regardless. We could be in 6th place in the 5 team AL Central and I will still be watching the Sox games. I bet most all of us would too
  14. QUOTE (Cali @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 04:33 AM) I figured out what I'm gonna do next season as to whether or not I get the baseball package (assuming they don't go full rebuild, in which case I'll get it for sure). I'm gonna wait out April. The last two seasons combined in April they are playing 13 games below .500. In May-Sept/Oct: 23 games over .500. You talking MLB Extra Innings stuff off cable or satellite?
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 02:38 PM) The White Sox do not have need of a below average defensive OF/backup 1b (Cuddyer) or a left handed DH. They have too many of both and are spending way too much money on both. Twins jettison players and the Myth continues. We don't need to sign these fellows for exactly the reason Balta states. Butm the sad thing is we might get beter production from the castoffs
  16. I think Joe's article was well written. We know there were problems inside the Sox last season. We had lots of spirited talk here about internal issues and player and coach and manager issues. Simply because Cowley writes the srticle is no reason now to dismiss the information as being from an unreliable adn trouble making writer. Where there is smoke there probably is fire. The truth hurts sometimes. Bottom line is we need to get things straightened out and get back to winning baseball games instead of looking to tear the team and organization apart.
  17. It is fun to speculate and all, but really all we can do is hope that trades like the ones being made for E Jax and now Santos do work out for the Chisox in the long run or short run if we are real lucky.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2011 -> 03:34 PM) If he does that, then spectacular! Trade him instantly. That second. Don't care who takes over at DH/1b. Peavy also, even if he doesn't pitch to the $20 million he's paid this year, if he pitches well enough to be a decent starter, the Sox might be able to save $5 million or so by dealing him at the middle part of the season and sending along some of his contract. That would be an intelligent move also. We might have to hope that Jake Peavy can take over from Buerhle as far as performance. Is that even possible? Jake has never been healthy since he joined this team and the cost to keep him keeps going up. Dunn might perform at the 30-40 plus 100 RBI level again, but if he doesn't .. well what a waste. Rios has a bad year folowed by a good year and then a bad year. KW's move looked pretty good in 2010, but still at what $16M a year? It wasn't such a great move. Sunken costs is right, but really I call it highway robbery by non-performers.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 13, 2011 -> 12:02 AM) Don't forget that KW and company seriously considered drafting Loux but medical issues caused the team to pass on him. & is he better now? And is he major league ready. The guy I see picthed at A ball
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 02:21 AM) But there's still that one thing out there. With Santos...we did not have to move him. We have to move Danks, we have to move Quentin, we didn't have to move Santos if we didn't get a return big enough to say "that was a good deal". It is very hard to see the logic in the trade of Santos. Maybe the Sox don't feel Sergio was the real deal? I was impressed with the kid and we had him locked up for quite awhile. As with all trades time will tell
  21. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 08:54 PM) Barf! lol
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 09:46 PM) ChrisRongey Chris Rongey Don Cooper re-iterates what KW said a couple months ago in regard to Chris Sale: "Set in stone. He's a starter" #whitesox I guess we should know that for certain now with the departure of Mark Buerhle
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 10:27 PM) Sadly AJ, you have to choose one or te other. Just being with the Sox versus being with the Sox and winning?
  24. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 06:03 PM) 28 teams didn't do anything this week.. I was going to say it was like the rich getting richer, but really who scored here? The yankees didn't do much, but will as they pursue that Japanese phenom and many of the competing teams other than the Angels pretty much stood still. LA-LAA land had the money I guess. Miami did too. Don't know where they got it but they did. There are still some pitchers like Edwin Jackson on the market and no doubt he will get a pretty good contract from somebody. I know our guys will be in demand. I just hope KW stands his ground and doesn't try and make a deal just because he has to keep his reputation. I can think of worse things than moving ahead into the 2012 season with our nucleus intact. Those big non-performers we all talk about need to rebound. That happening is just such a big question mark though
  25. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 04:38 AM) Great point. I've lived through the era of make the playoffs every decade or so and it wasn't that great. I'm just not enamored with sitting on a boat load of minor league talent and hoping enough develop in 4-6-8 years to contend. So 2-3 years and hope a couple of guys rebound from career lows would be my choice. Plus, I think there is a core there that could make that happen. I am siding with Northsidesox72 and Tex here. Trade away our good core players in salary dumps, or the idea we can get a boat full on eager and talented minor league talent is a real stretch. We may never see any of that talent develop while our players continue performing well for other teams. Granted it's all a crap shoot, but I think there are better options then a demolition. When we were seeing KW trade all of our young talent weren't many saying that depending on a minor league player to perform at a high level in the bigs was iffy at best. You never know, but now it seems we are willing to support what we were against before. Regardless of how I feel I know and accept there will be a different direction taken. I just hope it doesn't lead over the cliff
