  1. QUOTE (rangercal @ Jan 3, 2009 -> 12:11 AM) I hope the media makes a big deal of the Utah situation so it could create more pressure to get rid of the BCS. What would getting rid of the BCS accomplish? There is not a viable alternative at this point. The only somewhat realistic possiblities are plus ones. 1. Some say just play the bowls and then rank the teams and let #'s 1 and 2 play for the title. That has to be the dumbest idea I have ever heard. What if #1 after the bowls is undefeated and #2 had two losses? Are you really going to tell me #1 is going to have to play one more game and if they stumble against a 2-loss team..... What about the year where the season ends with four or five teams all with one loss? You have the same arguments that go on now? What if by some crazy scenario you have three undefeated teams? Again, just dumb, dumb, dumb. 2. The only realistic possibility is seeding the top four teams and playing a true plus one. Problem with this one is determining the top 4. This year, both USC and Utah would still have been left out. There is no perfect scenario. The FCS 8-game playoff format has many obstacles. You can't compare the two because there are major differences. TV, neutral sites (bowls), etc make it a totally different landscape than the FCS division. (Although, I'd love to see a USC or a Florida have to come north to Michigan, Ohio or Pennsylvania to play in the winter time). The biggest obstable right now to any major change is the 12th game that was recently added (no way schools give up the money and give up that game) and TV contracts. The Rose Bowl has a TV deal that still has a few years left on it and does not coincide with the deal for the rest of the BCS bowls (thank god they are no longer on FOX after this year!). Also, the NCAA doesn't have their hand in the BCS. Get rid of it and get the NCAA involved and the money goes there first, then is distributed to the schools. That would take some money away that the big schools are now getting. The big schools aren't about handing away money. For all the dreamers of the 8-game (or ridiculous 16-game) playoff format, there are just too many obstacles which includes too many people/schools with different agendas. Just sit back and relax and watch great football. That's all that really matters!
  2. So Jordan, when do you weigh do get your results?
  3. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 11:21 PM) Yet Florida loses to Ole f***ing Miss and gets in...AT FLORIDA?! Yeah, but that's okay, right? Yes it is. The reason is the strength (at least perceived) of their conference. Let's not start trying to compare the top to bottom strength of the SEC and the Pac 10. USC lost in front of a national TV audience to a team that Penn State absolutely destroyed. That certainly didn't help their cause.
  4. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 11:06 PM) The only team that can beat USC is USC. Honestly, everytime they play a good team they kick their ass. When they lose, it's because of a lack of focus. USC should hold some of the title. USC should not even talk title until they stop pissing themselves once a year. One time, I'd just like to see Pete Carroll or a USC player when interviewed after a dominating Rose Bowl win, say "We feel like we're one of the best teams in the country. If only we'd have beaten __________, we would have had a shot to prove it." Of course, that will never happen. That said, in a one game deal, I want NO part of USC. Problem is, there is more than one game in a season.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 10:12 PM) Wow, I either totally overestimated Bama's offense or underestimated Utah's defense. Perhaps a little of both. But there was NO doubt that Andre Smith not playing had a major impact on Alabama tonight, especially their pass protection. When Mike Johnson, his replacement went down, it got really ugly. Smith was the anchor of that line. He never needed help to double team someone and dominated run blocking from the LT position. Having an anchor takes so much pressure off the rest of the line. With him gone, the LG moved to LT and a new LG was inserted. Then when they lost Johnson, it got way out of hand.
  6. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 09:35 PM) I didn't get to go to the game because of work, and my fiancee was pissed at me for it, so I get to feel bad twice as much now :-). As for the Ole Miss fans. During the later parts of the game the Ole Miss fans were tossing "spit" cups into the Tech stands. Ole Miss had several confederate flags flying in the stands, Ole Miss had guys standing in the walkways trying to pick fights after the game had ended. The Ole Miss band played through Texas Tech's school song. Ole Miss fans stood up and cheered and did their ridiculous hotty toddy chant when McKinner Dixon was down on the grass hurt. Now the Ole Miss fans are in droves at the Tech site just talking s*** over and over and over for 4 hours now. I have never seen anything like this. Stereotypes are usually bad, but in this case... Yeah, but Ole Miss chicks are smokin HOT! And dasox, I know you have to play the whole game, but let's not forget that Bama was up on Ole Miss 24-3 at halftime and cruised the rest of the way. They almost cruised too much, but they clearly handled Ole Miss before they took their foot off the gas.
  7. In the game no one cares about, Alabama will play without All-America OT Andre Smith. It sounds as if someone (possible family member?) had some contact with an agent and Smith seemed to be uncooperative with the administration when trying to investigate. The general feeling is he was trying to protect someone. Smith is expected to be a top 5 pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
  8. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) Rhoads was an assistant under McCarney. Tuberville wanted to tap him as Auburn's DC, but Rhoads turned him down to stay at Pitt when Tuberville hired Chizik. I have no strong feelings one way or another, to be honest, but our best player said he's staying, so that's nice. Not a bad hire, not a great hire. Rhoads was considered a pretty good defensive coordinator. Early in the year, Auburn's D didn't miss a beat from last year after losing Muschamp. Once the offense really hit the tank and after some injuries, they just got wore down. Not sure what he will do as a HC, but he was pretty well respected at Pitt before coming to Auburn this year. Who was the NFL guy you were wanting? The link you provided is dead.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 05:43 PM) Rex, I thought you were a Michigan fan? Big Ten beating ass today, which was nice to see. Purdue looked extremely dominant. The Buckeyes lost their most experienced player and captain for 6-12 weeks in Lighty, but I honestly believe that the team will be better giving those minutes to Bufford who was Mr Ohio in Bball last year. Michigan football, Indiana basketball....... try and keep up
  10. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 12:03 AM) I'm not even thinking about strength training until February, at the earliest. Although I do plan on starting an Abdominal training program January 1st. I'm all about shedding pounds right now. Rex, may I ask what your goal weight is? As in the final number you plan on stopping at. Don't have one. While the scale is frustrating me lately, I can still feel my body changing so there is no panic. When it feels right I will work to maintain, but ultimately the number on the scale won't matter as much as how I look and feel. For example, I think there are 50 more pounds to lose. But if I lose 30-35 and gain 15-20 pounds of muscle and feel/look good, then that's okay too. I'm at a 40 waist now. Not sure I would ever go lower than a 36 (have very thick thighs). Would be shocked to see myself in anything smaller than an XL consistently (have wide shoulders and a broad chest). I'm at an XL now in some clothes and a XXL in some. So I don't see my overall size changing much more, but there is definitely some strengthening, tweaking and redistributing still happening.
  11. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 09:18 PM) "The Indianapolis Star first reported the story on its website Wednesday." This quote suggests it was news to the Indianapolis Star. The posted link suggests it was news to CBS Sportsline. I certainly had never heard any talk of this before. Like the ads used to say for re-runs of Must See TV: "If you haven't seen it, its new to you." Boring or irrelevant as it might be, it was "new" to me, so I thought I'd share. Sorry if I struck a nerve. You didn't strike a nerve, but most IU fans including myself have pretty much burned last season from their minds planning to never look back. It was a wasted season and one no one that follows IU wants to think about. The "news" you brought out shouldn't ahve surprised anyone is my point. It has become obvious that last year's team was a highly dysfunctional situation and was a ticking time bomb before any of the mess became public. When Coach Crean got to IU, aside from the walk-ons, there were ZERO players that were academically eligible and some were so far gone that a strong finish to the semester could not help. The bottom line is, for me, most IU fans and I think most avid college basketball fans, that article evoked a collective yawn. Just not big news if you had followed the situation at all.
  12. This is not news at all. It was widely speculated that the three players Sampson suspended for three games each last year was for getting caught smoking pot. News about last year's team has no bearing on what is happening today, which is IU is getting their brains beat in while rebuilding the program the right way. Two big yawns on that story!
  13. Perhaps we will both be pleasantly surprised lol Personally, I'd ratehr be f***ing ecstatic, but I'll take pleasantly surprised.
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 12:14 AM) How did you gain 2 pounds by the way? One too many cheat days? I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. You've lost damn near the equivalent of two suitcases. It happens. I am worrying about the scale less now (though it still pisses me off). I've only lost 13 pounds since late September when I went home to my cousins wedding, yet the jeans I bought (44 waist) to wear home are now too baggy. I just bought a couple of pair of khaki's that are 40 waist. They are a tad tight, but wearable. I am hitting the weights hard enough now that I am redistributing weight more so than losing it. I can still feel my clothes fitting differently despite not losing as many pounds as before. That said, I have not given up the cardio. I did 5 miles outside Saturday and ran 4.25 of them. I did 8.5 miles Tuesday and ran 4.5. I'm running another 5k Saturday and want to run it beginning to end. Only once have I run 3 consecutive miles and that was on a treadmill, so it's not a given. My next challenge at this point looks to be the Country Music 1/2 marathon in Nashville, April 26. Not 100% sure, but I am beginning to think I can do it. I'm going to start a training program after the new year and see how it goes. If I can stay consistent with the training, I am going to go for it! Keep up the good work and remember, if you are doing a lot of strength training, you may not see the drastic reduction in pounds. But you should feel the difference and feel your body changing. That is as important as the pounds on the scale.
  15. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) I saw it, and I also saw that UNC came out as 29 point favorites. I don't bet at all, but if I did, I would be all over that. I wouldn't be shocked if UNC only won by I didn't know the line, thanks for that info. You're a lot more confident in the Aces than I am. I'd be happy if they kept it under 20. It's been several tough years for Evansville and while I think they will be back near the top of the MVC, I'm not convinced yet.
  16. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 11:22 PM) I don't know about that :-), but you are the man for your biggest loser numbers. I just noticed those, and they are amazing. Great job. Thanks man. And you missed my 2nd post. I was wondering how many people would reply before seeing it. The over/under in my mind is eight!
  17. And now back to reality.............
  18. Evansville will go into Chapel Hill and upset the Tar Heels Thursday night!!!
  19. Maybe Patterson is looking to move on. It has been widely reported here that he wanted the Auburn job and even thought he was going to get it. The worst nightmare for Auburn fans right now is that Iowa State gets Turner Gill and he vastly improves Iowa State, while Auburn struggles under Chizik. Chizik is not a popular choicie at all here right now.
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 06:50 AM) But at some point it has to be about numbers. All three candidates for the most part passed that first test of being on another level than other players, and leading their team to success. After that point, it should be about the numbers mostly. Especially when a player like Bradford leads to nation in so many categories. And if you think this was a year without the hype, thats probably because you ARE a Tebow supporter who is a beneficiary of most of the hype. That's not Heisman hype for Tebow. Tebow already won the award, immediately earning hype from the media (and well deserved). I'm talking about schools hyping their player, as in advertising, sending out letters and stuff to remind voters of their guy, etc. There was no Heisman campaign for Tebow. As far as a Tebow supporter, that is hardly true. I do respect SEC football because I live in it, but I am still a Big Ten guy. I respect Tebow because I think he is an amazing college player. In reality, he is what college athletics SHOULD be about. But if you recall, I said I would have voted for McCoy first.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 05:53 PM) Why is that? Bradford had the best numbers of the bunch. Tebow should have been last on everyones ballot as he probably shoudnt have even been one of the 3 finalists. Ah I had to edit because I saw above that Tebow's intangibles were a major factor. I just don't think the best player means the best numbers in all cases. I've watched Tebow enough over the past few years that I am a believer. Lots of guys would have won the Heisman if it were simply about numbers. What I did like about this year is I don't think Heisman Hype came into play at all. There was no clear cut favorite and the guys at the top really separated themselves in the 2nd half of the season. No billboards in Times Square necessary this year.
  22. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 07:44 PM) I didn't see that Rex had posted about Evansville. They are very impressive. Looks as if they could join ISU and Creighton at the top of the MVC. I hope you are right but my take is that they are improving, but far from where they need to do. Not sure if I would use the term "for real" just yet. How about "improving"?
  23. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 11:40 PM) I'd have had Tebow 4th, behind all 3 Big 12 South guys (McCoy, Bradford, Harrell in that order). I understand Tebow is a "leader" and the SEC plays much better defense than the Big 12 does, but the SEC was down this season even if people won't admit it, and Tebow's numbers are just so inferior to the big 3 from the Big 12, who all also only lost 1 game. Tebow's #'s were down because his offense only utilized him to the degree they needed him to win. He attempted less than 20 passes against Hawaii (14), Tennessee (15), Kentucky (15), Georgia (13) and The Citadel (11). He wasn't always in the game in the 4th quarter. Florida scored a lot of different ways and they don't have a Big 12 style offense. His stats aren't as good because he wasn't asked to be Dan Marino or Dan Fouts. At the end of the day, if I have one game to win, I want him on my side. The guy threw 2 interceptions all year. I don't think he is any less of a player because of how he is utilized. I've seen enough of him that I think once he stays and continues to do what he does next year, he will go down as one of the greatest college players ever. And he should, in my opinion. On a separate note, for those that have CBS College Sports Network, the Boston College - Miami, aka Flutie Miracle Game is on right now. It's tied 28-28 in the 3rd quarter. I wonder if BC can pull it out again?
  24. 1. Men at Work - George F. Will -- It's a little old, but it is excellent. The book consists of four parts/interviews as such: Tony Gwynn - hitting Orel Hershiser - pitching Cal Ripken - defense Tony LaRussa - managing It really digs deep into the thought and preparation necessary in each discipline. 2. The Mental Game of Baseball -- An excellent book for someone who plays or played the game. It really gets into baseball between the ears, not typical fan stuff. 3. The Power and the Darkness - The Life of Josh Gibson. Written by Mark Ribowsky 4. Green Diamons - A book about the business and finances of Minor League Baseball. It's outdated, but has some good stories, including how the value of Minor League franchises has risen over the years. 5. Any biography or autobiography on Mickey Mantle. 6. Ball Four - already mentioned 7. Bases Loaded with History - The Story of Rickwood Field, America's Oldest Ballpark by Timothy Whitt -- Excellent book on the history of an amazing old ballpark. A must read for someone that appreciates lesser known history of baseball and a must visit to the ballpark. Walking into Rickwood Field is like walking back in time.
  25. Personally I would have voted for: 1. Colt McCoy 2. Tim Tebow 3. Sam Bradford
