Outfielder Kenny Williams Jr., the son of the former big leaguer and current White Sox general manager, has barely played since being diagnosed with mononucleosis in early May. He also didn't see much action in his first three seasons in college, sitting on the bench for two years at Arizona and redshirting in 2007 after being academically ineligible following his transfer to Wichita State. An athletic 6-foot-2, 198-pounder who has been drafted twice—including by the Rockies in the 32nd round last year—Williams did shake off the rust in 2008. He's a switch-hitter with a quick bat, though he has yet to develop much power or plate discipline. His best tool is his speed, which he uses well on the bases and in the outfield.

at this point in the draft i dont really know any players, so ill stick with what i do know and i think dominic de la osa from vandy could be a solid pick in these rounds
-
danks must be telling teams hes gonna go back for his sr year...probably thinks he can get back into the first round
-
that report is not correct though, he isnt a lefty...hes a righty i actually like that K rate alot
-
i know this has probably been said a few times in here already, but how many rounds are today?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) Why has he fallen so much then (this isn't meant in a sarcastic asshole way)? im wondering the same myself...especially because in baseball america top tools in the draft, he was listed as the best overall athlete for college guys
-
he was the #2 prospect in a weak pennslyvannia draft class according to baseballamerica, but he didnt make their top 200 overall

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:33 PM) Jason Kendall, I believe. damn he was type A???? i cant believe billy beane gave away a sandwich pick for rob freaking bowen
-
freak, cubs took vandy SS ryan flaherty in comp A round....who did they even lose in FA to get compensation?
-
ive seen them both play between 5-10 times each....i preferred smoak, because i thought he would be more projectable...big, nice major league body with great pop and a natural hitting stroke....bat was like an extension of his hands....beckham i thought was one of those guys who got the most out of his ability at the college level, so i was a bit more skeptical how that would project to the pro ball...plus hes pretty small (especially since when i saw him most he was a freshman) but he could also really hit .....couldnt really go wrong with either, but i thought smoak has 40 HR power and beckham may ultimately be a 2b, so i thought smoak was the better option.... that said my buddy who works for the vandy baseball team told me he thinks beckham will be better than smoak so who knows

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 03:43 PM) how does beckham project to AAA/MLB? how many years away is he from the pros? best case: could be ready mid next year....probably wont be ready til 2010.... sox will probably start him in hiA ....hopefully he can move to AA by the end of the year, but he wont start for a while as georgia is still playing ball

cubs looking for help for this year maybe??

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) Absolutely. I said it earlier, but I really think he has the potential to be a very popular player if he makes it to the big leagues. In a completely heterosexual way, he's a good looking guy, polite (i.e. "Mr. Gammons"), cracked a couple jokes in there... Has the makings of a popular guy. The one thing that may hurt him is how little he relates to the typical, blue-collar Sox fan, and you can see that in how a few of you have already made comments about his bad accent and bad haircut, etc. cubs gonna steal your potential qb at UT? edit: ok your post above says yes lol

one thing i certainly dont miss about living in the south....southern boy haircuts

QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) That is true, but you have to take everything into account. The draft is too much of a crapshoot anyway. A solid SS/2B has more value than a 1B unless the guy is far superior in terms of overall numbers. Looking at it that way, you have to go with defense: Beckham .969 OPS, 13 HRs, 33 XBHs, in 228 ABs Smoak 1.065 OPS, 22 HRs, 38 XBHs, in 260 ABs Not much of a difference with both playing in the same conference. i believe those are beckhams sophomore year numbers....he out hit just about eveyrone in the country this year i just got a text from my buddy who works for the vandy team, so he knows his sec baseball pretty well and he said hed rather have beckham than smoak
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:18 PM) How is Beckham in the speed department? How does he compare to the NL East shortstops in that sense? he doesnt compare to those guys....hes more jeter fast than reyes fast....that is, he'll steal bases and run the bases well, but speed won't be a big part of his game....15-20 ish SBs IMO

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) THE WALRUS IS OFF THE BOARD st louis really must think he can play 3rd, because they dont have an opening at 1b for a long time
-
wallace is such a typical As pick...ill be shocked if they dont take him
-
haha when we played georgia and beckham was a freshman, we really really really heckled him.....we got some pretty good dirt on him from a guy who knew him in high school....id post it but im not sure it would fly with some of the admins
-
QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) Could you imagine Hamilton AND Smoak in the same lineup? if texas takes smoak, there comparison to teixeira will be used often
-
wow castro went early
-
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:59 PM) Yay! We got a right handed hitting version of Chris Getz! Awesome! Who needs a switch hitting power hitter who could be in the bigs by 2010? thats completely untrue... beckham way, way more upside than getz
-
QUOTE (Cowch @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:56 PM) idk anything about this guy. Someone wanna give me a rundown? And maybe a rundown of Smoak and Crow too. Try not to be biased. haha. i saw beckham play in person about 10 times....all as a freshman and soph though....he was tiny as a freshman...couldnt have been more than 150 but he was pretty solid....decent line drive type hitter....added a ton of power his junior year and jumped from like 7 to 13 to 24 HRs his jr year as he filled out his frame... i believe he won the cape HR derby (which is with wood bats)
-
im just afraid of a guy who was a one year wonder.... btw that pick came from laumann then, he was watching georgia for a while
-
meh...he was the one i wanted least of the 4
