  1. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 24, 2005 -> 12:32 PM) I'm not sure what he's referring to. But after Sweeney was drafted I don't think anyone here thought he would be ahead of where he is. Maybe he's referring to how well he did in spring training and relative to that a dissapointing year power wise last year. Otherwise it just doesn't make sense to me. I think most compared him to BA since they were in teh same round, especially after his big spring, and expected him to succeed everywhere the Sox put him. But really, sweeney struggled early last year, and in my opinion, most thought hed have a terrific year, which he clearly didnt. hopefully we'll see that power develop as he continues to grow.
  2. QUOTE(sec159row2 @ Feb 23, 2005 -> 11:00 AM) BONDS.... he wants to move on..?????. why doesn't he admit the truth??? Giambi admitted and apologized.. killing the story... Sosa even apologized about the cork bat and the story was over... then bonds talks about the reporters closets... the public doesn't care about reporters closets.!!!!.. they care about Bonds' closet..!!!! . this POS makes me sick... the ONLY WAY TO MOVE ON... is to admit the TRUTH, and apologize... this is a very forgiving country admit your mistake and move on.. look at bill clinton for crying out loud... he apologized and moved on... and the world still loves Bill... every reporter should have walked out on that scumball bonds. and let him lie to himself.... no doubt about it...he is more than likely the biggest dick in all of sports
  3. QUOTE(silver and black @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 06:36 PM) To start her off: KW: I'm disguising my self as a Eskimo... Ozzie: You are in Arizona, you dummy! OG: i tink dat kid pokschkednik is steal alot of dem bases dis yeer. hopefully my whole team will. Kw: youre telling me, i just set the mood by robbin the nearby bank.
  4. QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 11:10 AM) Supposedly his strongest attribute is his makeup. From what I hear and read, he's a real student of the game, humble, and a hard worker. All good signs. I'm hoping to see him pitch in person in a few weeks. not sure where i read it or exactly what it said, but it was from an opposing player who said that everytime he would go out against mccarthy he brought a different approach, and that everytime mccarthy would strike him out. he said mccarthy was way ahead mentally and knew before the games each hitter better than anyone. His biggest knock is that hes skinny for his height...6-7 190. Though he has put on some weight. heres baseball america's scouting report... "Background: Scouts John Kazanas and Joe Butler did an excellent job when they locked onto McCarthy after he had gone 12-0 and struck out 14 per nine innings in junior college in 2002. He led the Rookie-level Arizona and Pioneer leagues in strikeouts in his first two pro seasons, then topped the entire minors with 202 whiffs in 2004. Strengths: McCarthy’s best pitch is a two-seam fastball that generally parks around 90 mph, and he has a four-seamer that hits 92-93. He also has a plus curveball. His height allows him to deliver pitches on a steep downward plane, and he throws strikes at will with an easily repeatable delivery. Weaknesses: McCarthy has sailed to Double-A without a hitch. He can get better with his changeup, and he has started to make progress and use it more often. The Future: Chicago couldn’t find a fifth starter in 2004, and McCarthy could jump into consideration with a strong spring. He’ll probably return to Double-A but won’t stay long if he picks up where he left off."
  5. from baseball americas discussion of the top 10 prospects in the nationals system.... "Q: Russ from NY asks: What does the future hold for former The Masters College product Jerry Owens? A: Aaron Fitt: Hello everyone, and welcome to the first ever Nationals chat. Let's get going. Moderator: Jerry Owens could have a very bright future, and he just missed making the top 10. The fastest player in the system, Owens understands his game very well and plays to his strengths, hitting the ball on the ground and learning to work the count. He is a touch old for a guy who spent the year in low Class A, so the Nationals will try to move him quickly and see what he can do - which is one reason they sent him to the Arizona Fall League this year. Once Owens is fully recovered from his shoulder injury, and he should be by Opening Day, he will move from left field to center to take better advantage of his speed. "
  6. QUOTE(Yossarian @ Feb 11, 2005 -> 11:04 AM) I'm not trying to rehash the Lee trade. Ozzie clearly wanted to go in another direction and the Sox had been banging their heads against the wall since 2000. I'm A-OK with what KW did this off season. What I object to is the "suspect defense" of Lee mentioned in the article. Once you get a label I guess it's impossible to erase it. I know stat geeks will never be impressed with his perfect fielding percentage because of range factors and other assorted criteria. The man worked to become a good left fielder. He should get credit, so I'll give it to him even if I get blasted. He was awful, he worked hard and made himself better. Other guys did it and got credit for it. Not Carlos Lee. Now his base running? That's another story altogether. actually, those stat geeks you spoke of, shouldnt be the ones to bash lee since he had a perfect fielding % last year and his zone rating was 3rd in the AL. His range factor was below average, but that doesnt tell nearly as much since that it largely dependent on the pitcher. Stat geeks would also point out that he lead the AL LFs with 11 assists. however, these are the very stats taht can be decieving...although i dont have numbers i will be willing to bet that lee failed to throw out more runners than just about anybody in the league, since everyone ran on him. I also know that Lee got to very few balls outside zone, something which good fielders should do. also his lack of errors could easily be seen in his passive approach at fielding. The stat nerds are the ones who overvalue Carlos, and the scouts in this case have it right.
  7. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 10, 2005 -> 02:39 PM) What does Gload have to do to prove he can be a strong bat off the bench? I don't buy into this RH & LH bat stuff. What count's his how a guy does against RH & LH hurlers. 3 yr avgs vs RH, LH: Gload 218AB .298A, .358O, .445S .803 Gload 47AB, .383A, .420O, .574S, .994 That looks pretty strong to me 200 some number of ABs does not mean you are proven. Gload is a good guy on the bench, but he still has to prove he can do it on a more consistent basis. same thing with jaime burke, who everyone loves for some reason. hes a 33 year old career minor leaguer, who had some nice ABs in limited role playing half a season. I dont see people jumping on kelly dransfeldt
  8. Its kind of interesting to see that the sox got better sabermetrically, especially considering that all of the espn big shots (neyer, stark) who are moneyball and billy beane lunatics, have been blasting the sox. Shows how much those morons know. Anyways, the ways that the sox got better this offseason go beyond the numbers as well all know, so it should definately be an interesting regular season. only a week til ST
  9. QUOTE(qwerty @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) I would say beltran is the smartest base stealer as much as i think he is overated. He has been safe over 90% of the time in his career. That is just about as good as it gets. that is as good as it gets, but beltran is also an oppertunistic base stealer, running only on the pitchers easier to run on. gusy like pierre and podsednik have it much harder, in that opposing catchers and pitchers know they are gonna steal all the time, and pierre and pods run on the good pitchers/catchers and on the bad
  10. i agree the power will be there, but maybe not 242 homers. but a team that hits 200 is generally thought of as a good power hitting team, and the white sox and yankees are the only teams to do it for 5 straight years in history. i think they will hit 200 and make it 6 in a row...here are my projections. Podsednik 10 iguchi 12 Dye 27 konerko 36 Everett/Thomas 29 Rowand 27 AJ 16 uribe 21 crede 24 _____ 202.....plus add in some pop from the bench (gload, borch, timo)
  11. i've had it for the past 2 seasons, and in my mind its no doubt worth it. it decent quality if you have a decent computer and high speed hook up. its not like watching the games on TV, but its a damn good alternative, id recommend it over the radio
  12. parts of rookie of the year are filmed at the cell. jack parkman in major league 2 is a white sox also
  13. QUOTE(MinnesotaSoxFan @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 08:29 PM) I forgive this newb for not knowing my style of postings. haha no, i knew you were being sarcastic, i was just sayin, that player better be someone who is terrible....joe borchard should do.
  14. QUOTE(Spod=Ratings @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 08:27 PM) Are you kidding Me?!? You know we have to wait until june to get him haha no s*** right, if that PTBNL from the alomar deal part 2 is anything better than scrap garbage, im gonna be upset
  15. QUOTE(Spod=Ratings @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 08:23 PM) are you sure it was a joke when you posted it? Or after the responses? Man, come on, i know im new to the board, but gimme some more credit than that. theres a reason i said "im sure the club would be happy with it," and not the fans. of course i was joking when i posted it
  16. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 08:21 PM) ...doesn't that mean I should be laughing? yes
  17. QUOTE(ihatethecubs @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) u r joking right? clearly
  18. alright guys, i think i worked out a trade that im sure the club would be very happy with to dump harris now... Chicago White Sox trade Willie Harris to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Roberto Alomar.
  19. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 11:35 AM) LOL, that sound I just heard must have been the steam off your head when you read 'oversized.' The problem with Harris was that he was supposed to be a typical small ball player. Yeah, Harris is fast, but how many times last year did we see willie fail to get a bunt down? How many times did he steal a meaningful stolen base? sure he had 19 SBs, but they came at times when they didnt matter. Harris just isnt a good base stealer. also, he hit only 2 triples and 15 doubles. My biggest beef with harris over the past year was the amount he popped up. Hit the ball on teh ground and get your base hits. At any rate, what should the Sox get in return if they do trade harris? maybe urbina as has been rumored, or maybe they can package him with a prospect like sweeney and garland for a good #2 type starter.
  20. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 05:05 PM) How about this? White Sox get: A.J. Burnett Marlins get: Jon Garland Willie Harris I would do that trade in a second. I would too, but they wouldn't i dont think
  21. So now Harris seems like the odd man out. Say the marlins do sign delgado. Say the rumors we heard about them then moving castillo are true. Could they move Castillo to another team, and then acquire Harris (who was initially in those rumors) in a three way trade with the sox getting something from the other team? not sure what they would get, but what do you think? on another note The guy on Stayin Hot on mlbradio said that Billy Sample and Brian McCrae both saw Iguchi in Japan in the allstar leagues and said the he's pretty good, and they sounded optimistic about him. They also said that Iguchi's smaller contract isn't because he's worse than the other Japanese guys with larger deals, just that Matsui bombing killed their market.
