DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) OK, I need a history lesson.... Hillary keeps saying she has 35 years of "change" in politics. Ok, what exactly has she done to cause change? I can understand the past 6-7 years. But what about the previous 30? That's Hillary claiming she has years of experience while saying she's the candidate of change. Kind of an oxymoron.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 11:40 AM) Iowa has been a huge push for Obama, as he has gone from even to a double digit lead since then. Wow. Ding Dong the wicked witch is dead? Stay tuned. Follow the yellow Barack road?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) You know what, you've figured it out, you're right, we're on to their secret liberal media plan. "This Republican field is so bad, the best way to help the Dems is to put all of the Republican candidates on TV constantly and let them make fools of themselves. That'll build the Dem brand more than anything - giving all our airtime to Republicans!" It's much better for them to do that than focus on 'The Chosen One' as she goes down the drain.

Who likes the Swisher trade?
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 05:58 PM) I still don't think there's a chance the Angels are going to make a deal with the White Sox. And I think KW genuinely does have some confidence in his young pitchers, and I think he realizes he needs the young pitchers he has right now to succeed for his rebuilding plan to work. I agree with you. The Angels have not been known for making blockbusters deals, which this deal would be. And yes, I believe KW has faith in Danks and Floyd.

Konerko to the Angels?
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 05:52 PM) Why do people just assume you can stick any shmo over at 1B and they'll be at least average defensively? There are skills needed to play there just like any other position. Fields has rarely ever played the position in his career. He's got enough defensive potential to stick at 3B, and shouldn't be moved to 1B unless we acquire a top 3B. A guy that can make the majors and also be a starting QB for a Big 12 team is not just any schmo. First base is not a difficult position to play. That said, we shouldn't put Fields at 1st. Groom him at 3B and let him increase or establish his value.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 05:28 PM) Hmmm...today's media coverage. Can someone tell me what's missing there? Yep. I sure can. They are trying to bury the fact that Hillary got her ass kicked in Iowa, by focusing on the GOP.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) You'd be surprised just how many Iowans wish we didn't have the caucuses. The constant phone calls and mailings get annoying in a hurry. I'm not surprised by that at all. I get aggravated with that crap too, and I can imagine the amount of it you have to put up with in Iowa.

Crede Minors Question
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 03:14 PM) Too many people are underrating Crede's defense. Fields should be in LF or in the minors developing 3B defensive skills. I'm a big Crede fan and I don't, by any stretch, under rate his defense. But if he won't sign an extension, he's gotta go.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) Yes and no. They are making it look like she's "fighting for America" now. :PUKE Not to underestimate the Clinton machine, but I believe Obama will be the nominee. In fact, I kind of have my suspicions that Bill doesn't want her to win. Nothing solid to base that on yet, so don't hold me to it. Let's call this a developing situation that I'm still watching.

Gio, Sweeney, DLS
QUOTE(KevinM @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) ...ok. I would just like to know the reasoning for such an opinion. To me, Sweeney was not the prize of the deal. You don't show regression in repeating AAA and have teams coveting you. He's only 22. He'll be a solid ballplayer.

Gio, Sweeney, DLS
QUOTE(KevinM @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 01:46 PM) Please, someone explain to me what is so smart about this. It's just my opinion. I threw it out there and will stand by it. Let's see what happens.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 6, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) The media headlines are cracking me up. "No More Mrs. Nice" and "Clinton Hits Back" and all this "tough" s***. I hate the media. Let the media keep portraying her as a tough old b****. That's the very reason people hate her anyway.

Crede Minors Question
In answer to the original question, I don't think Crede can be sent to minors unless he agrees to it or if it's a rehab assignment, which can only last two weeks.

Who likes the Swisher trade?
QUOTE(BearSox @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 05:20 PM) I love it... people complain how we have no prospects and then we go and trade our 3 best prospects, everyone then goes, well their just prospects. LMAO. I understand your frustration, but let's take a look at recent history. Look at some of the Sox' highly touted propests over the last few years. Borchard, Rauch, Reed, Olivo, Young ... of those 5 'studs' none has yet to make anything close to a major impact yet. Young might, but the ship has pretty much sailed on the others. Now let's look at those from the Sox system that have had an impact. Garland, Buehrle, Crede, Rowand .... Buehrle, as good as he has been, was never really regarded as a top prospect. Garland had two 18 win seasons, but how many years did it take for him to get to that point? Even at that, he just recently got to the point that he had earned enough respect not to be called Judy by a reasonably large group here at Soxtalk. Rowand, after a few years in the bigs, turned into a decent starting major leaguer. But again, it took awhile and we had to go through the growing pains with him. The same applies to Crede, and about the time he found his 'mojo', his back started acting up which now limits his effectiveness and his potential. Back to the first 5 I listed, if I'm not mistaken Borchard, Reed and Rauch were all first round picks. As of today, I'd trade all 5 of these guys for Swisher. Hell, throw in Kip Wells too. Prospects are nothing but suspects until they actually prove something in the bigs. Swisher has proven it. If one of those 3 we traded for him pan out for the A's, after a few years in all likelyhood, then the trade works out for them. If two work out, they got damned lucky. Regardless of what happens, today it's an iffy proposition for the A's.

Pitching prospects
QUOTE(StatManDu @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 11:10 PM) Gagne and Weaver both never signed. Let me check on Dean Chance. That is intriguing. Also, they let Rudy May go if that means anything to anyone. Apparently, I was misinformed while growing up. I just checked on Chance and he was drafted and signed by Baltimore, and drafted by the Angels from the O's. My bad.

Pitching prospects
QUOTE(Whitewashed in '05 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 10:52 PM) Jeff Weaver and Eric Gagne for a few years. They were both drafted by the sox right? Unless you're talking about a whole career. Not sure about Gagne, but Weaver never signed with us.

Pitching prospects
If you are going back far enough to include McLain, then let me throw in here that they let Dean Chance go to the Angels in the expansion draft so they could hold on to the legendary Bruce Howard.

White Sox Acquire Nick Swisher from Athletics
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:22 PM) So, how about your lineups in a perfect world-in a world where the players perform as well as they can. Heres mine. 1. Richar 2B 2. Ocab SS 3. thome DH 4. Kong 1B 5. Dye RF 6. Swish CF 7. Fields 3B 8. AJp C 9. Quentin LF I'd go with Swish leading off. He takes a lot of pitches (which is one area Pods was good at) and gets on base a lot. OCab is perfect for the 2 spot. Bump Fields, AJ and Quentin up a spot and put Richar at 9.

White Sox Acquire Nick Swisher from Athletics
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) That may be so, but what Detroit got out of the 5th spot last season was rocked. At worst, Willis is a lateral move. He'd have to really really suck to be a downgrade. With Bonderman and Robertson rebounding, their rotation should be improved. How much is a different story, but it should see some improvement. Valid point.

For everyone freaking out about Gio...
QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) I was talking with my co-worker this morning about Gio. Now, let me start off by saying he has no knowledge of him and my limited knowledge of him comes from this site. Our big question is, how great can he be if he is so easily traded? Or is that fairly typical with any minor league player? Ahhhhh it is good to be back. LOL ... He's been traded 3 times in 3 years. You'd could say he's a journeyman minor leaguer.
