  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2007 -> 11:07 AM) Even I'll step up and say that it's a possibility, but it's certainly a stretch to expect 20+ quality starts from Floyd next year. It'd be dynamite if he could. I don't expect 20+ QS from Floyd next year. But there comes a time when you have to give these young guys a chance. Garland to a few years to become a decent pitcher. It's part of the equation. The have to get ML experience to become quality ML'ers.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 18, 2007 -> 08:04 AM) There was also a pretty prominent ex-pitcher who said he wouldn't last, and I can't remember if it was Tom House or Mike Marshall. It's funny, but I was trying sort that out in my mind just a few minutes ago. If I remember correctly, House worked with Prior ... and Marshall was very critical of House's methods.
  3. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 18, 2007 -> 08:40 AM) ??? That wasn't his point. I didn't mean for that come across as a critcism.
  4. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 18, 2007 -> 04:52 AM) Too broad of a stat to use. Doesn't account for WHIP, and a guy can actually lose a quality start if he continues to pitch deep in a game. A guy could give up his 4 total ER in the 8th, and even though he would have a 4.50 ERA (0.00 coming into the inning) it wouldn't be a quality start. Regardless of your opinion, that is the official definition of a quality start.
  5. For the record, I changed my registration to Republican specifically so I could vote for Ron Paul in the primary.
  6. QUOTE(greg775 @ Dec 16, 2007 -> 09:18 PM) It seems natural in reacting to one of the biggest sports stories of the year, Sox fans are happy two of their own sluggers, as well as the Big Hurt, appear to have done it the right way. It's not like somebody just decided to praise them for not taking steroids out of the clear blue. It's in response to the Mitchell report. There's nothing natural about it. This thread needs to die. It's lame.
  7. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) Is it any wonder this topic came from a user named Forrest G? How ironic is that? Stupid is as stupid does.
  8. Dan Fogelberg passed away after an extended battle against prostrate cancer. A great balladeer has moved on. Our loss is God's gain.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 16, 2007 -> 08:04 PM) Newsweek looks into Huckabees past and allegations that Huckabee's son, while a Boy Scout, participated in the lynching of a stray dog and had his governor Father help cover up for him. I surprised the national media is going after Huckabee. If he wins the GOP nomination, the Dems will win for sure. If they'd just back off until after the convention, they could assure a Democratic victory in the general election.
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 01:49 PM) No you're not. And amazingly I agree with you on that part. On the other hand, I'm probably the only one who's willing to say we should tough it out with exactly the guys we have now. I think that is a viable option and one that is not necessarily doomed to failure.
  11. QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 11:25 AM) People said the same thing about Denny Neagle, Mike Hampton, Kevin Brown, Alex Fernandez.... I'm not saying he isn't the best just that the odds of him actually staying healthy for even half the contract isn't good. since you will only be able to insure half of it, that will be a major drain on any budget. Here's what I'd do. I'd offer him a choice. 7 years at $20M per or 3 years at $80M total. That would give him a chance to hit the free agent market again at the age of 31. However, if he agreed to either offer, I'd sign him.
  12. QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 10:51 AM) So you would go $100 mil for four and not $140 mil for seven? Those last three are costing you less than $14 per year. I'm with that esteemed baseball analyst YAS on this one. I also think the top offer at 7 years would be $17 to $18 per not $20. There are exceptions to every rule. Johan Santana is THE exception to the no long term contracts for pitchers rule. I don't think I'd offer that to any other pitcher in the game.
  13. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 10:34 AM) No, he is a little different then what we have dealt with over at least the last 30 years. He's making his platform to get away from all the "same 'ol same 'ol"... but when he gets there, he will fall into the same trap, and that is what makes it no different. The net result is the same ol' crap.
  14. QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 10:17 AM) No pitcher is worth a 7 year deal. Look at the history of those long term deals, I can't think of any that have worked out. I have no problem offering 25 mil for 4 years but I would never sign a pitcher for more than 4 years. Normally, I'd agree with you. But Santana is something special. He's still young and already a very accomplished pitcher.
  15. QUOTE(Sox It To Em @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 09:57 AM) That price doesn't seem all the ridiculous to me. Compare that to Clemens' $1 million per game average and it seems like a bargain. The caveat here though is that you have to pry him loose from the Twins before you can sign him.
  16. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 04:40 AM) I'd like the sox to sign him at that price. Yep. I agree. He's worth it.
  17. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction. Obama represents a new direction in American politics... one that finally moves away from the partisan rancor that has defined the last 15 years. Whether or not he represents it in action or deserves to represent it is irrelevant, that is what his campaign has become. If he steamrolls through February, he becomes the President in waiting IMO. Unless there's something huge, and I doubt there is (for a pres candidate, he's been pretty forthcoming about his faults - including recreational drug use), I just don't think anyone can derail him. There is no new direction in American politics. Obama is just like all the rest of them. One of the elitist, royal bloodline that has dominated American politics for over 200 years.
  18. A little late, but I hope it was a good one Mike.
  19. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) Naw, man, now I'm awake. It always ends up a nightmare when you try to pick it up again. He'll tear his rotator cuff or some s*** like that. Three times. In one month. It's just gonna suck now. Everyone thank YASNY for ruining everything. Oh man. No need for that. I'm just glad I could contribute in a meaningful way.
  20. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:23 PM) Christ, man. After a long, full day of the goddam Mitchell report, did you really have to interrupt this giant, collective soxtalk wet dream? Really? Just putting out the info. You always have the choice to ignore it and continue your wet dream. Carry on.
  21. In the article on the Trib site regarding Rowand signing with the Giants, the GM said that prior to the signing they were listening to offers for Lincecum and Caine, but now that Rowand has signed those two guys are not being traded.
  22. Just heard on SportsCenter .... Canseco, when asked about ARod, said that the Mitchell report was incomplete and and he couldn't believe ARod's name was not on there.
  23. QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 06:50 PM) I don't think we need to give him props for a move that a crazed donkey would know to make... in fact, I don't think a crazed donkey would have ever had Gonzalez on the roster as long as KW did. Leave the democrats out of this.
  24. Damon and Clemens. Imagine that.
