QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 09:15 PM) Overbay maybe off the market... http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...t=.jsp&c_id=mlb From everything I've heard out of the Brewers, Overbay never has been on the market. That doesn't mean that he won't be traded, though.

No way in hell Kenny sends those three guys out in a trade.

Ozzie's got to play the bench players from time to time. He keeps the bench sharp and the regulars rested. I have no problem with him doing this.

I like Pettitte a lot, but this ain't happenin'.

I've been on here for 2.5 years, and I have been one of the biggest Rowand backers on the site. But, I've also been a Sox fan since the early 60's and have never seen the Sox in the World Series. Would I trade Rowand for Griffey? In a half heartbeat I would. I love Aaron Rowand and the way he plays the game. But Griffey is exactly what this team needs. This team ... This year. That's all I'm focused on.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 08:06 AM) sabermetric statistics are always gonna have a tough time explaining this teams success, because, well, sabermetrics place 0 value in the way the sox try to win games. close games are won becuase of defense, pitching and small ball. the sox arent gonna outslug the opponents, this is widely known, so they are gonna win alot of 3-2 ball games, thus the run diff isnt gonna be that much higher. yes ill admit the sox got lucky in winning some games, but didnt other teams too? so far we have lost 2 games on a jermaine dye dropped routine fly, and a crede dropped routine pop up. ill agree that teh white sox arent quite as good as their record would indicate (109 wins at this pace places them in top 20 all time). i know this because i watch the white sox. the biggest problem i have with statheads is taht i watch a game and will say that one guy has great range, or one guy has patience at teh place and that leads to not only walks, but the guy waiting for and crushing mistakes. statheads meanwhile, tell me the same thing, only somehow, they are smarter because they use numbers. i dont need to see VORP or winshares to knwo that barry bonds is the best player in the league. and if they came up witha list of top 20 most productive players, and i did, ill bet the list would differ by no more than 3 players. again, they just have a way of quantifying what a scout or a fan would see. If you let stats rule your thinking, and don't use your eyes, you are limiting yourself. Baseball is a game of so many nuances that can never be adequately measured by stats. To me, stats are something I check to verify what my eyes are telling me, or make me take a closer look.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 08:09 AM) He was complaining about USCF after being to Busch Stadium? This guy really is an idiot then. Busch stadium is a dump. It was one of the worst places I ever saw a ballgame. The fans were nice and smart, but I could never complain about our home park after seeing the s***hole that St Louis is. It is a round cookie cutter stadium, with a couple of extra things done to it. It is generic, the site lines suck, and the air doesn't move in it because there is not an openning for air to flow through. The only thing worse than watching a game in STL is eating the food at the ballpark. There was no choice, and it tasted like microwaved cardboard. After seeing a game there, I could not see why anyone would ever say they liked that place. Which might have something to do with why they are tearing down the not all that old dump. -
QUOTE(S720 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:58 AM) Damn, this suspense is killing me! I can't take it anymore! I am going insane with anticipation! I... I... I... I would love to have Schmidt AND Vizquel on this team. Burnett AND Lowell or Schmidt AND Vizquel Make your selection known! For this team, this year ... Schmidt and Vizquel. This year is what should be the main consideration.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:23 AM) oops yeah sorry, after reading thru the other threads after i posted i realized that levine said it last night too apparently....sorry......3 scouts and the GM seems like a ton to me. I was just trying to reinforce your story, not criticize you for posting it. That's good info.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:05 AM) if this doesnt get your engine turning i dont know what will. a very good friend of mine who works at wrigley field, called my at like midnight telling me he saw KW at the game. KW walked right by him, hes positive it was him. said interestingly enoguh that when he saw him he was chatting with jerry krause. at any rate this is a very reliable source and is 100% accurate. take it for what its worth, schmidt, vizquel, eyre, who knows. but KW was there, and usually when a GM is there scouting a game something big is usually goin down In all the articles and columns I read this overnight, I did read somewhere that KW and 3 Sox scouts were at Wrigley to watch Schmidt pitch.

QUOTE(TheDybber @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 11:03 AM) Is it from a Cagney movie? I can't remember the name, but I think he was a gangster. The one where he says "I made it ma. Top o' the world." White Heat...is that it? Sorry. It's from John Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino in the old sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. It was a running gag on the show.

QUOTE(whitesox61382 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 12:37 PM) By making that statement, you are suggesting that Soriano's production is a product of his home park correct? If that is the case, than let me point out the flaws in that logic. 1) Sample size - You are basing this statement on a half a season worth of stats. That simple isn't large enough to make an accurate assessment. 2) 2004 splits - While there was a difference in his home and away splits(.886 OPS vs .735 OPS), it was no where close to the drastic difference of 2005. Furthermore, it is worth noting that he actually hit more HR on the road(16) than at home(12). 3) Expect some difference - I don't care who the hitter is, if you play in a great hitters park, than you are going to see some difference in their home and away splits, however, that alone doesn't necessarily mean that he is a product of the park that he plays in. 4) Yankee production - If Soriano is a product of Arlington, than how do you explain his BETTER production as a Yankee playing in a neutral hitters park? 5) Similarities - From a statistical perspective, Arlington and USCF are very similar in regards to park factor, so it is likely that you won't see much of a difference in his overall production. You are making an extremely weak and flawed arguement if his away splits are the primary reason for not wanting Soriano. While they shouldn't be ignored, to suggest that his production is solely because of Arlington simple holds little water. Good points. But there are other reasons I don't want Soriano. He's a hack at 2B and he's another RH hitting free swinger. This club is moving away from bad glove RH thumpers, not collecting them.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 11:37 PM) I pretty much think Texas is keeping Young, Tex, and Blalock no matter what... I know there were Mench rumors at the begining of the season or off-season but those 3 are a strong young core.... They also got 3 really good pitching prospects... Danks, Diamond, and Volquez are all going to be good pitchers in the future.... and than if Juan Dominguez ever figures s*** out he can be very good. On tonight's game on ESPN, they said Texas is trying to lock up Texiera long term and if they can't do so, they might put him on the market because they Gonzalez waiting in the wings.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 12:55 AM) That's pretty much how I feel, even though I think Contreras is very underrated (especially around here). If Burnett's not going to stick around, we're probably gonna regret losing McCarthy in a few years. If we fail to win the World Series, we're probably going to regret losing McCarthy.

The Tigers are a longshot to snare the wildcare this year, but look out for them in '06. They're gonna tough as it is, and they will throw some money at their problems.

QUOTE(SpringfieldFan @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 10:36 PM) That reminds me, what was Frank Thomas thinking by admitting to the world he is hurt again? Couldn't he and the Sox have waited until after the trade deadline to make such a big deal about it? That cost them some trade leverage IMO. He was probably thinking, "My damn ankle hurts." The dude couldn't catch up with a 88 mph fastball from a mediocre lefty. He wasn't helping the team, nor could he.

I would think that triple digit temperatures would curb some fans displays of enthusiasm as well. -
This is hilarious. A whole thread about the misuse of the word "Jew" ... yet it was used not in a way to insult Jewish people. Not at all. It was used as a way to make fun of Latinos trying to speak English. This has been going on around here for years and not once has any of the politically correct police picked up on it. Let somebody insult blacks, gays, whatever and you're all over it. Somewhat of a double standard maybe? Just something to think about.

The point about the Cenral's weak hitting can be a result of the overall strong pitching within the division, as these teams play each other 18 or 19 times. Or ... is the pitching that good because of the weak hitting?
