QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 12:13 AM) As a card carrying member of the Journal of Oregon Ornithology (JOO) I am offended by this term! Journal of Oregon Ornithology (JOO) Joo just gonna have to live with it.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 07:25 AM) I saw that happen three times, from our seats in 1st Balcony, Sect. P, Row A. 1992, 1973, and 1971. Without question the most painful was 1971. Ouch!

The Red Sox deserve respect. No doubt about it. They have an awesome line up and are the defending World Champs. But ... a few points: 1. I don't look for Thomas to be back, but Dye was missing, as was pointed out. He's a very solid ballplayer and his absence made our lineup that much weaker. 2. There's an old saying in baseball ... good pitching beats good hitting. We finally have the horses. 3. They seemed to be impressed with our starters but no mention of the bullpen. Seems to me they stranded a s*** load of runners. Me thinks the pen had something to do with that. 4. We did give them a game. No doubt. If they are counting on errors by Crede and Iguchi to beat us, let them. I'll take my chances.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 11:58 AM) I hardly doubt it, but ok. He was on the market. Now he's not. There's still a week left till the deadline. Things change all the time.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 11:56 AM) Did you guys read the article that was put in this thread. Billy Wagner was officially taken off the market. He is no longer available. So get him out of your heads. That's today ... tomorrow may be different.
-
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 11:49 AM) I just see acquiring Burnett as solifying a good rotation. If you spin him for Wagner, it just seems like slightly upgrading Marte(like giving Marte better control and a little more speed on his fastball), but it doesnt seem to me like the move to put the Sox over the top. JMHO Wagner is more than a slight upgrade over Marte.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 10:57 AM) Disagree again, Marte walks too many people, and has serious control lapses. Look no further than last year against the cubs when he walked the winning run in. If Gas-caino didnt have the huge blowup against the Indians when he was over extended, he would look better to you. I throw that Indians game out. It wasn't fair to Vizcaino. Having said that, I'd still rather see Marte in the clutch.

When it comes down to it, I think Frank will need the off season to heal. He really looked like he was in pain. Can we afford to wait and see? I don't think so. Griffey is the type of player we need to replace him, but that contract is hideous.

I sure didn't mean to start any s*** with my '24 hour' comment. Sorry folks.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 09:03 AM) There was never a 24 hour window. Levine said something could be done in the next 24 hours. I read somewhere where Florida was going to wait a couple of days before moving forward. The only 24 hour window I was referring to was the thread title.

We need security. We need to preserve our liberties. Both are true statements. Somewhere in the middle is where this is going to land. It's a decision we all have to make as to what we give up, and what security lapses we accept.

Soon, it will be baseball bats that are banned. Tough to play the game without those. But they CAN be used as a weapon. They are not necessarily used as weapons. The same as guns or knives.
-
Baker said during the game last night that he'll eventually move to AA or AAA depending on which team is at home.
-
The 24 hours referred to in the thread title are almost gone. I guess we'll have to extend the 'deadline'.

QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 07:05 AM) The more I think about it, the more I think that sending Contreras, McCarthy and Marte to the Marlins for Burnett is foolhardy. Burnett benefitted from piching in one of the most extreme pitchers' parks in the NL over the last few years. And, because he's in the NL, you can expect to have his ERA increase by .3-.5 runs anyway by going to the AL. That just puts him on about a par with th Count, who has been HURT by pitching in what has been the best hitters' park in the AL. Unless we are getting Florida's #1 or #2 prospect, I can't see this deal being reasonable, EVEN IF BURNETT SIGNS AN EXTENSION. If the Sox send those 3 to Florida, they'll get something more from the Marlins than just Burnett.

I thought this type of situation was what the United Nations was for. But, no, let's blame the United States. It's the politically correct thing to do.

.230 6 18 Those are Soriano's average HR's and RBI on the road. Isn't that one of the big complaints about Konerko? Yes, this guy can flat out hit ..... AT HOME. No thank you.

Funny ESPN Poll- AL team with best young talent

QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 11:08 PM) i thought we were done complaining about ESPN? What! Are you nuts? :rolly -
QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 10:15 PM) Could that be because every team runs on him? Another fine example that stats don't come close to telling the whole story.

QUOTE(Benson&Rexage @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 10:17 PM) I hope this guy isnt serious about trading Mark How many times does it have to be said that this post was sarcastic, a joke, etc. I can't believe people are not seeing that.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 08:54 PM) Disagree. Marte isnt what he was 2 or 3 years ago, and is the LEAST dependable arm out of the bullpen. Yeah thats right, I said it, I think he is the least valuable arm out of the bullpen. So you are trading an unproven prospect, and the last arm in your pen, for a Major League starter, who has many quality starts. I dont think we are getting ripped off there. PLus........If we add Vilone, our pen got better too. I'd rather see Marte in a close game than Vizcaino. And I'm not a big fan of Marte.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) I just laugh at everyone who says Paulie swings for the fences all the time. All you have to do is look at what he does with 2 strikes. Paulie specifically looks to go to right, more specifically the right center gap. If you doubt that look at how the outfielders shift when Paulie gets two strikes on them. You'll see the CFer move over to cover that gap. Paulie is not a selfish hitter. He has his faults and isn't dominating (although I'm positive he's hitting pretty darn good since the break). Now he has struggled with runners in scoring position, but hey, s*** happens and career wise he's always been a pretty damn good run producer. He comes through clutch and I can't help but laugh when I see so many people talk about how crappy he is. Without him, this offense would be a whole lot worse. Are there better 1bman, sure there are, but not many. By the way Dan, I'm just kind of adding to what you said, definately not disagreeing with ya. I'm with you on this. Paulie hasn't been great, but the Sox would be much worse off without him in the lineup.
