Crede is probably our 6th most deserving player, so if he made it then something is wrong. We'll see in about half an hour or an hour though for sure.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 5, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) Not to be critical of a win, but how many solo homers has Linebrink given up in the 9th? Maybe he should satrt that first batter off with something else than whatever he throws cause it ain't fooling them. Great effort by Floyd to show he is the staff ace. I remember Kalapse posted on this a few days ago after the Cleveland sweep. Adding in tonight, Scott Linebrink has allowed 4 runs since May 1st, which first of all is incredibly good. The thing is, all four runs were on solo home runs leading off the 9th inning. Two of them were walk off home runs, at Tampa and Wrigley, the third was to Sizemore and then obviously tonight. All four of those incidents, to be specific, have been since May 30th too. In fact, Linebrink has allowed 7 earned runs all year, and 5 were on solo home runs leading off innings, with the 5th home run being April 28th against Baltimore in the infamous 3-3 tie that hasn't been finished yet leading off the 11th inning.

Great game to be at, nice crowd tonight too. Gavin had been going through a stretch of pitching recently where he hadn't been so great, but we needed him tonight and he was just outstanding. Also of course nice to see BA contribute yet again, and both middle infielders were outstanding. Great to see our patient approach tonight against their staff (Smith in particular), did a great job taking what they gave us in terms of walks, and eventually the big hits came along with it. Let's get a split tomorrow and finish the homestand at a very good 8-2.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 5, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) DeRosa working out with Soto? He's magically went from a mediocre to good player in the last few years, while gaining power, in his early 30's, after never hitting too much at the minor or major league level. Then again, to be fair, that happens all the time. Although actually, DeRosa is just a guy I look at and go hmmm. On the other hand, Soto is a guy where the only question is who is supplying him with the HGH, clear, and needles.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 5, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) C. C. must be packing his bags. Yep, and heading for Milwaukee. That could be quite a race in the NL Central.

A loss like this just magnifies how much our bad luck loss Thursday killed the whole series. When you hit the ball as hard as we did in comparison to Oakland on Thursday, you should win the game. However we didn't, then we were just dominated last night, and now we have to win a couple this weekend just to split. Bad luck blows.

If you are somebody that believes karma reciprocates itself in the form of an injury, that Barrett was the recipiant of such late in the 2006 injury when he suffered intrascrotal hematoma, which is basically a ruptured testicle. A broken nose on a foul ball to the face sucks, but season ending surgery to fix ruptured balls is far worse.

The one thing that bothers me is I can think of at least 4 games in which our starter threw a complete game, and we still lost. In the big picture, that's a both baffling and depressing stat to think about with as few complete games as you see in this era of baseball.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 11:36 PM) The book is officially out on Carlos Marmol. Unless he hangs it obviously, take the slider at all times because as nasty as it is, it won't stay in the zone. Then, crush the fastball because it's his only other pitch. Either that, or Marmol's overuse has caught up to him, or perhaps it's a mix of both. Proves true yet again today. Take the sliders, usually they'll be out of the zone, then crush the fastball. Marmol is a big problem for them, and they can't win long term without him because if he's bad, all they have in that bullpen is Wood.
-
Hard loss to swallow because it was due largely to bad luck. We hit the ball hard twice in that 4th with 1st and 2nd and 1st and 3rd, but all it leads to is a warning track flyout and double play, whereas their guy hits a fastball eye high over the wall. Just hate to lose a game due so much to bad luck, but even if we split this series we end up with an 8-2 homestand and that'd be fine. We just need to make sure we bounce back tomorrow.

Yeah, it would be a major upset if the Cubs don't make the playoffs. The Cardinals and Brewers are probably the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the NL right now, but I'd be surprised if one, let alone both, finish ahead of the Cubs. The Cubs problem is that their pitching will not win in October, especially if Marmol is as human as he's looked the last 2 or 3 weeks, not to mention their #2 starter literally can't win on the road this year. That is why I'd be shocked if they don't make a move or two before August 1st.

This was just a matter of time, and I'd be very surprised if this isn't so in 2009. It hurts in the sense that Farmer and Stone are AWESOME together, but in today's world it's all about the TV crew, and Hawk and Stoney were also GREAT last year during that week or so they had together in August. I wouldn't mind D.J. with Farmer either, I think that could work well actually. I'd hate to see D.J. go away all together.

RIP 2008 Cleveland Indians: March 31st-July 2nd It's obvious Jenks is hurt, which is a concern, but yet another great win. Cleveland is done for good, it's now a 3 team race. 30-11 at home!!

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) There are alot of those fans that think the White Sox wrote, Lets go go whitesox in reaction to Go Cubs Go. Which of course makes sense, since Go Go White Sox was written in 1959 and Go Cubs Go was written in 1984. The book is officially out on Carlos Marmol. Unless he hangs it obviously, take the slider at all times because as nasty as it is, it won't stay in the zone. Then, crush the fastball because it's his only other pitch. Either that, or Marmol's overuse has caught up to him, or perhaps it's a mix of both.

Official 2008-2009 NHL Thread

I'm not a hockey expert, so I'll keep this short and sweet. They obviously overpaid for Campbell, but Campbell is really crossing the Rubicon by signing with us as a big time FA, even with the improvement we've shown the last several months, so you had to overpay to get somebody like that. LOVE the Huet deal, assuming Bulin is gone. I think Huet and Crawford is a nice 1-2 punch. We are one forward short, hopefully one of the young kids can step up next year though or there is another deal out there of which I have no idea. Getting a #2 for Bourque is an incredible steal IMO. With Havlat, all you can hope is he's in a contract year which means he'll be good. I like our team next year, not sure if it'll be winning a Stanley Cup, but we'll be in the postseason and Rome wasn't built in a day. Hopefully we can be a #4 or #5 seed in the West next year. -
I'm just glad nobody swept in that Tigers/Twins series, I didn't want to see either team get that kind of momentum. We'll just see who wins the series tomorrow, while in the meantime we may have sent the Indians spinning into sell mode with that great win tonight.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) Kerry hadn't pitched in 4 games, hell, he was so bored, he had to flick somebody off. What else was Lou supposed to do? He could have waited until tonight, knowing it'd probably be a close and tough game with Cain pitching. But oh well, not our concern, and the Cubs lose again. They are having a hard time with the injuries, well and they aren't playing good baseball at all either.

Dale Mollenhauer, the leadoff man and 2B for Kanny who was a 17th round pick last year, is just on fire after a slow start. Up to .297 and hitting .490 the last 10 days (although only a .340 on base to go with it, and he doesn't hit for much power, so he needs to walk more). 3rd baseman Logan Johnson, who was a 20th round pick last year, is also doing well at Kanny (.283/.366/.459/.826).

If we can get a solid to good pitcher, obviously go ahead, but our pitching is good enough that we don't need to take fliers on high risk guys. No thanks.

Two guys that weren't even on the 25 man roster the first several weeks help us win tonight. Congrats to Russell on the first major league win, Wise and OC manufacture the run after Alexei creates one by himself. Danks. It is hard not to start to believe watching a win like that. I think we have to get rid of Uribe when PK comes back too. I know only having Ozuna as a backup IF is a risk, but Russell and Wise have shown they can help you in spots as reserves, something I'm not sure Uribe can do. Great win!!

Boy that was ugly, but it's a big W. A sweep would be nice, but if we just split against C.C. and Lee, we win the series and send them out of town 10 and a half back and (at best) in a tie with Kansas City in the cellar. I'll take it. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) Do you think Crede might be afraid of re injuring his back and so it distracts him on the field? I've been thinking that all year. He's offensive numbers overall are still really good, but he's just not planting at all on throws or even when he bends over to pick the ball up on grounders. He's all legs right now on defense, and that's no good.

Lilly gets the win, throwing 8 plus and allowing 2 runs. Also, he attained the rarely seen platinum sombrero, or "olympic rings", as he went 0 for 5 with 5 strikeouts at the plate. Also, for reasons only known to Lou, he brings in Kerry Wood in a 9-0 game, allowing him to waste 28 pitches in a blowout spot.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 11:10 AM) I agree that the lineup has been more balanced and the games in NL parks seemed to make Paulie's injury a case of good timing for us. However, I'd much rather have a healthy PK in the lineup now that interleague play is behind us. I agree with this, I actually think seeing Swish play so well defensively at 1B is more of a good to know for the future thing, such as in case Thome is gone after this year and Konerko moves to DH more. I am just hoping that in the time Paulie heals his oblique, he can also heal his thumb injury. I firmly believe the thumb was the biggest reason Paulie struggled, especially after seeing how Quentin's slump a couple weeks ago coincided directly with his hand bothering him. It sucks Paulie had a setback, but if we can get him back with the oblique AND thumb 100 percent, he could come back and get on one of his hot streaks that we know can carry the team for a couple weeks. PK is only 32, no way he's done yet. QUOTE (Maxwell @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) I can think of some football parallels. Tom Brady is one. I think Brett Farve is another. That's true. Maybe I should have been more specific and said baseball teams. After all, I don't think Wally Pipp was injured, just had the flu.
-
Maybe it's just me, but I've never seen a team benefit more from two injuries than this years White Sox. If Jerry Owens hadn't been injured in March and throughout spring training, does Carlos Quentin even make the team? I think he doesn't, especially if Owens has a decent spring. On May 15th, Alexei Ramirez was hitting .143 in very limited playing time and looked like he needed some time in triple A. The next day, he was in the lineup for an injured Juan Uribe (who went to the DL a week later) and hit a game winning home run at San Francisco. A month and a half later, Alexei has been playing everyday at 2B, and is now hitting right around .300 while playing outstanding defense. Even since Konerko was injured, Swisher's average, on base, and slugging are up about 20 points each as he plays excellent 1st base defense (although, admittedly, our CF production is down, but now we know what Swish can do at 1B). I just find it interesting that a team could benefit from injuries, and certainly this is the exception to the rule especially with as few injuries as we've had, but it's just strange to think that without the injuries we've had, we'd probably be several games worse recordwise, and not have discovered two of our young budding stars in Quentin and Ramirez.

This bullpen has the ability to be as good or even better than the 2005 one........but there is half a season left, and we'd have to win it all again before I would be willing to go there. So I think saying this is a bit premature.
