  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 09:16 PM) Aramis filing for free agency ≠ Cubs Lose Aramis. Not yet anyway. I hope they enjoy the 5/60 to 5/65 they'll be paying a dog (in terms of effort) if they plan on keeping him. And it's 5/75 more to get a free swinging vet who can't play defense and who would play in CF (Soriano). And they still have no pitching, a hole in LF, RF, at 2B, and SS...... as well as CF and 3B if they can't get those 2 guys, and a thin pitching FA market (and thin market in general), with the Cubs having no farm system....ya they are pretty bad. The Cubs never win bidding wars, and they'll have to in order to get Zito, A Ram, Soriano, or Matsuzaka. I wish them good luck with that one.
  2. QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 09:14 PM) I just think it's crazy Zook can recruit that well. I was talking with Willie and we both agree he is just bringing in talent for the next coach. Zook could sell an eskimo an igloo, best recruiter in the land. And you and Willie are right, and I said this THE DAY he was hired, he's a lousy in game coach, but he's going to load the program with talent for whoever the next guy is, and if they make a good hire with the next guy, the program could go do some things.
  3. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 12:23 PM) The beauty is Iowa is loaded at the WR position. We have a ton of tremendous athletes that are going to be joining Douglas (some of which are red shirting this year) and one of our better WR's got hurt at the beginning of the season (Davis or Calvin) and he'll be back as well. Christensen is going to have a lot of weapons and apparently the school has a couple more good QB recruits on there way as well. Yeah I know you guys should be loaded at WR in the future, but in terms of just this year, at least since the early injurie(s), they are awful, which is why Christensen impressed me so much. That, and the pass blocking for him was TERRIBLE, he was under heat most of the game and the 4 sacks he took could have been 7 or 8 if he didn't move so well.
  4. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 04:47 PM) Michigan with Manningham is much different than Michigan without Manningham. They also have the best front 4 I have seen in college football in a long time. They have as good a combination of a defensive and offensive line as I can remember seeing. Their o and d lines are both in the top 3, maybe the best, in all of college football. But your right about Manningham, however Michigan should easily be able to go to 11-0 without him. The key is to get him back and healthy for Ohio State, they can't beat those guys in Columbus without him (although they might not be able to even do it with him, this Buckeye team is a machine).
  5. QUOTE(Nokona @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 07:48 PM) Drew Tate is the quintessential leader. His elusiveness and gutsiness are outstanding. His fire isn't comparable. Since his sophomore season he hasnt had quite the help he deserves and if you watch what he did in the Cap One Bowl you'd understand. He's a QB who has lost his helmet and stayed in the pocket to try to complete a pass. Honestly, I'd take him over just about any QB in the NCAA except Troy Smith (yes that includes Brady Quinn). I absolutely love how he plays the game. I wasn't really even dissing Tate to be honest. But I think Christensen has far more talent, and is going to play in the NFL, while being just as elusive as Tate (Jake could have been sacked 7 or 8 times Saturday, and on the 3rd and goal late, if he doesn't escape, it's 4th and 20 and Iowa has to try another FG, giving NIU a chance for the win). Plus, as much fire as Tate has, as well as gutsiness, those things don't complete passes. As for the Cap One Bowl, that was an AMAZING moment at the end that even I could enjoy, but it was pretty much a stroke of luck in a lost game, a glorified hail mary that was completed because the LSU defenders fell asleep. He's an above average QB and he hasn't had playmaking help either of the last 2 years, especially this one.....I just think he's overrated and that Christensen will be better.
  6. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 11:24 AM) jamie newberg on benn recruitment (about halfway down) It's starting to look like Benn and Austin might be a package deal for Maryland or Illinois.....unless Florida State and their horrible offense and moron offensive coordinator can lure Benn away. Maryland is a big threat though being the local school for those 2, offering immediate PT, and having put quite a few guys in the NFL on defense lately, as well as Friedgen being known as an offensive coach.
  7. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 11:57 AM) I would love Henry Blanco. The guy has a rifle behind the plate and is the exact sort of defensive backup we could use. That or give the backup job to Stewart. I wouldn't love the needless extra 2 million dollars he'd cost over Stewart for a team that already will have a tightening budget to work on. Blanco might be the best backup in the league, but we can't be spending a couple million extra at that spot when you have a cheap, young backup in Stewie. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 12:11 PM) Why do we have to have so many guys making the league min in our bullpen? Is there some kind of rule I'm missing? Yeah, it's called the "we've got all our money tied up in the rotation and on Konerko, Dye, Thome, Iguchi, and soon to be Crede" rule.
  8. QUOTE(Wedge @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 10:58 PM) The point about Texas is that ND went down a spot or two after the UCLA game. Texas needed the same type of effort to beat a lowly team and moved nowhere. at Texas Tech is far, far tougher than UCLA at home.
  9. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 10:44 PM) Thank god we made the change to Romo. HUGE win tonight, and suddenly our season is back on track. Your 4-3 is 6-2 if Romo were starting all year......but at least he is now.
  10. Birdman with the forced fumble and fumble recovery in the 4th, turning a 14-13 defecit into a 21-14 lead. NIU Pride, wewt!!! Oh, and if you think the Bears can win a Super Bowl without having to win against a good team because of Rex.....your kidding yourself. Can he do it?? He could, but I'm not sure yet. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 09:17 PM) So, is anyone else of the opinion that Big Ben rushed himself back from a series of injuries long before he was ready physically or mentally? I'm of the opinion he was never any good, and he no longer has a great running game and dominant defense to hide his issues.
  11. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 07:23 PM) So Rex has played 5 good games out of 7? Yep, against: Detroit Green Bay San Francisco Buffalo Seattle Only 1 on the road (against Green Bay, who is 1-3 up there) and Seattle has shown they aren't all that great as well. Now I know he doesn't make the schedule, but Rex was awful against the only good defense he's played, and even worse at the horrible Cardinals. He's still a question mark, even with the hot start.
  12. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 07:12 PM) But why not count the defense? I mean Minny's defense is the reason they are 4-2 as well. We're talking about Rex, not the teams. All I know is Rex has yet to win a game for this team, so despite all the numbers, he isn't proven yet at all. And if you want to go to the record part of it, they'd be 7-0 with Brian Griese at QB too, the journeyman Brian Griese. They've won 5 blowouts that the defense dominated, and 2 games the defense made plays in late to win.
  13. As much as you can argue Grossman, the Bears are tied with an ordinary Minnesota team for first place right now if the defense hadn't bailed out Rex in 2 road games. EDIT: That would mean Minny would only have 1 loss, so the Bears would be a game back.
  14. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 06:25 PM) USC - you can make a case. Tennesee - 1 loss vs. a top 10 team by 1 point, has played a much tougher schedule than ND. Auburn - one loss, but 2 huge wins over a top 10 and top 15 team. Texas - only loss is against the #1 team in the nation while playing a tougher schedule than ND. The only one I can see ND ahead of is USC. And if ND takes care of their business like everyone seems to think they are capable of they will pass USC any way. USC lost their road game, by 2, to a 5-3 team that will make a good bowl. Auburn lost their game to a 7-1 SEC team that will be playing for a BCS bid in early December. Texas lost to one of the best teams I've ever seen. WVU and Louisville are undefeated. Tennessee lost by 1 point to Florida, without their starting RB. Florida lost on the road to a very good Auburn team in a close game. And all of them have played tougher opponents and have better wins than ND. To say ND is getting jobbed is simply ignorant.
  15. The Colts have their RB in Joseph Addai now, so that problem is off the list. The fact that they have undebateably the worst run defense in the NFL, yet are 7-0 is a testament to how awesome Peyton Manning is. At least for the first 16.
  16. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 02:57 PM) Mike Vick is playing so f***ing good. Yeah, took him 5 years and 6 games or so to look like an NFL QB. He's had 2 great games though. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 02:31 PM) I still don't have faith in him at all. I believe he'll fold when he faces a good defense or finds himself having to carry any significant load. This team still is dependent on the defense. It's nice to get turnovers to be able to start in the redzone constantly. The fact they'll be at home all through the playoffs will help. He's somewhere in between today and Arizona as a QB, just not sure which side he leans towards yet.
  17. QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 28, 2006 -> 06:51 PM) Bye Bye Joliet Catholic The recruiting trail has gone cold the last couple years, or at least when they play Morris.
  18. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 09:42 AM) http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines IMO, he is better than Pierre. Comes cheaper and is a better overall player. AGREED, and better than Pods too. I'll take it in that respect, no doubt. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 11:56 AM) I would be interested in what you think of Thome? I think people have some sort of impression that Roberts is nearing 40. He is 34. People are concerned that a guy that plays his game based on speed is more of an age concern since the speed goes first it seems like. Good point though. The other thing I like is that the Roberts is over 80 percent for his career and was over 80 percent last year in stolen base success rate. That's actually stealing to HELP YOUR TEAM, as opposed to number padding. If you can steal at 80 percent success or more like Dave, you actually help produce additional runs.
  19. I would also like to point out I'm not a total hater though, Jake Christensen is going to be a hell of a QB for Iowa. Only a RS Frosh, his team was in some trouble late today (up only 17-14 with 7 min left, no momentum), and he led them down the field, made 3 great throws, and hit a 4th down TD to put it away. Iowa's WR's other than Douglas are AWFUL, and the TE Chandler is a senior. so they need to get him some help, but he's got a bright future. I personally saw more of Christensen than I ever have of Tate, who I never got why everybody thinks is so good, but maybe that's just me. Should be fun next year at Soldier Field for Iowa/NIU, our sucky ass QB is gone and so is the Garrett Wolfe distraction, and we keep most everybody else, so we'll be a much better team than this years disappointment.
  20. We shoulda won that damn game at Iowa, it was right there. Too bad we shat ourself a couple times, and had the wrong QB in all game. Ugh.
  21. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Oct 27, 2006 -> 01:09 AM) I don't think it's a stretch at all. Razor has managed each of the last three seasons (the only 3 I've really paid attention to his teams) with a much more aggressive style than Ozzie. I don't see why the guy who gave practically every player on his club the green light to steal would suddenly be anything but aggressive in his approach as third base coach. Hmm ok. Well Cora literally cost us at least a run a game the last 3 months of this year, so I'll stand by what I said. But interesting point.
  22. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 11:59 PM) Imagine the devistation among Cub fans if the White Sox then Cards win the World Series in back to back years. I love the pain! God hates them so much. It's beautiful. And of course, in 2004, the other Sox ended their "curse". So 3 years in a row!
  23. QUOTE(CardsJimEdmonds15 @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 11:46 PM) Yea and even the 2004 and 2005 team Cards were better than this team IMHO.. maybe someone is smiling down on us.. an OK team has a chance to win a WS whereas those other two teams couldnt? That 2004 team was one of the best I've ever seen in my life as a Cards fan (I'm only 21) and they couldnt do it! But this team may? It doesnt make sense really! Exactly, especially that 2004 team. They were REALLY good, but they had BAD LUCK running into the Red Sox destiny buzzsaw. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 11:49 PM) I believe we can agree that the team that is playing the best in October will probably win the WS. That may or not be the team that played the best in May, June, July, Aug, and September. This isn't an on any given Sunday situation. I think of all the sports, baseball has the best playoff situation. If St. Louis wins this series, it wasn't by luck. They were playing the best when it counted. Oh yeah...the team playing the best in October always wins. The team that is playing the best though is a matter of total luck and randomness, and said team usually gets a few huge breaks as well. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 11:51 PM) Noone talks about it, but this might be one of the biggest upsets in W.S. history. For sure, definitely the biggest one since 1990.
  24. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 11:38 PM) I highly, highly disagree and to be honest, that's a theory that a lot of people have that really bugs me. I really don't feel like getting into a big argument over this right now but the best team will usually win the World Series, I'll just leave it at that. I'll just say the best team wins over 162, which is why the best 8 get to October, but the best team often times doesn't win in a best of 5 or 7 series, which is why the best team doesn't always (or even usually) survive October. Thus is how a 116 win Mariner team doesn't win the pennant, but an 83 win Cardinal team (probably) wins it all.
  25. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 11:18 PM) So if Razor Shines is a free waving 3rd base coach, we're going to turn on him too? There is no way in hell he could be as bad as Cora. Joey would send Ron Santo from 1st on a double to RF with Ichiro picking the ball up.
