QUOTE(ptatc @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 03:54 PM) I don't of DeRosa as a really good defrender. As a matter of fact I would say he an average 2B and below average at the other positions he has played such as SS, 3B or the OF. I've hardly seen him play since he hasn't been in the AL Central and he has been.....well bad. I take your word for it though, I haven't seen him play much.

Him and Gary Matthews are going to love Texas forever. A couple of early 30 somethings who can't hit but are really good defenders have a great year in a hitting ballpark and get way overpaid. He'll fit right in with the Cubs though, light hitter, doesn't walk much, strikes out a ton.

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 03:22 PM) true, but the latter part of your statement is what is most worrisome. groins and ankles have a tendency to turn into nagging problems. Well sitting a guy 4 to 6 weeks with an ankle tells me they are making sure Jamar totally heals, however i'm really worried about the situation with Randle nagging all season since it bothered him again last night. -

I actually had no problem with what Bobby Knight did either. After all, if your not maintaining eye contact at all times as your being publically humiliated on national tv, you deserved to get a full b**** slap to the face. Stupid ass kids!!! Plus, this is the first time Knight has done something like this, so his history means he deserves a free pass. -

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) illinois's done a good job of avoiding the injury bug the past few seasons, but it looks like that's all going to end this year. They'll survive with this year's weak OOC....unless these injuries are nagging. -

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 12:36 AM) Has the Joe Torre watch began? His contract is up after the 2007 season right?? I'd assume he just manages out next year, isn't brought back, and Girardi takes over. -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 12:32 AM) Actually, no. Oose has been okay. No inside game, but he's doing a good job of cleaning up the glass. The "4th best backcourt in the country" is the problem right now. I could go on and on about it, so I'll try to keep the "Why Marquette Currently Sucks" points to a minimum: -James gets to the basket any time he wants to, but then he seemingly throws up poor shots when he gets to the hoop. -McNeal is SPECTACULAR defensively, but really shouldn't be a main feature in the offense. His jumper isn't where it needs to be yet, and he frequently turns the ball over trying to force a drive. -Wes Matthews doesn't get the ball nearly enough. He's very tough to guard and scores in traffic down low. Pathetic that Marquette's most effective scorer had under ten points, huh? -The offense as a whole is in a world of hurt right now. Teams are zoning us and we can't answer. I hope to God I'm wrong, but I fear that the people who pegged this team as top 20 (myself included) greatly underestimated the loss of Novak. Lazar Hayward, Marquette's best freshman, was supposed to be able to hit from long range, and he hasn't even shot the ball any further than the block yet, and Dan Fitzgerald, our tall white dude who can shoot the trey looks extremely hesitant, despite the fact that really, his main job is to hit threes. -Did I mention that, while this team gets to the line and will get to the line a heckuva lot this season, that we suck at the charity stripe? At one point tonight, James missed three in a row. Fitzgerald could've iced it at the end with two at the line (when Marquette was trailing by one), and he could only bury one. You saw the numbers... 51%. Brutal. Of all people, Oose Barro was able to put the game away at the line with two swooshes, and his shot is one of the worst you'll see in all of D1 basketball. -Defensively, this team is tough. There's some overaggressiveness at times, but the three guards, including freshman David Cubillan off the bench, are extremely good defenders. I still worry about when we have to go up against the Hubbard's or Hansborough's or Grey's of the NCAA, but I think we'll be able to play really strong defense. We'll see tomorrow against Detroit. If they play like they did last nite, they will lose by 20, possibly more. Who knows, maybe it's better that they go down and have some time off to work on -- well, everything offense. Would much rather have a shot to play Texas Tech next week, but at this point, I can totally see Detroit pulling off the W in front of the Marquette faithful. That sounds about right. I saw you guys against Providence late last year at Bradley Center (visiting a friend at Marquette) and that scouting report is spot on based on what I remembered. I thought you guys might struggled offensively early on because outside of Novak, your 3 point and free throw shooting left a lot to be desired. The guard depth and defense are good though, and Hayward is going to be real good as well, just some jitters I'm sure. As for Illinois btw.....Carlwell made the right decision to not redshirt, and Semrau didn't. Semrau is just so lost (he was in the exhibitions too) and Carlwell, while a project on offense, is so big and strong that he'll contribute with blocks and rebounds and some easy dunks and such. It won't take long for Carlwell to take Marcus Arnold's minutes at all IMO as the backup 5 to Pruitt, and that spot is HUGE since you know there will be games where Pruitt has foul problems. -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) Marquette almost lost. We (sorry, habit) pulled it out in OT, but it was ugly. To paint a picture for y'all: -Marquette took 18 more FGs than Idaho State. -Marquette took 26 (!) more FTs than Idaho State. -Idaho State turned the ball over 24 times to Marquette's 11 (actually, 13). And Marquette won by all of three points. The shooting was atrocious. The Eagles shot 20% from beyond the arc (5-for-25), a much better (heh) 29% from the field total, and a shiny 51.6% from the free throw line. We play like that tomorrow, and we won't even get a chance to face Texas Tech. Detroit will run us out of our own f***ing gym. Yeah, I saw you guys struggled against like High Point the other night too. Does this have to do with the fact that Marquette has nothing inside at all, other than Ousmane Barro *cringes*?? -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:28 PM) Washington never defends, I'm telling ya UNI will play with them, I honestly think they'll get it done. We'll see though. You are right about Washington, but it's a road game and even with them not defending, Washington has too many guns not to score at least in the 70's. Not sure if UNI can keep up. It won't be a blowout or anything though. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:21 PM) UNI vs Washington tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if the Panthers take the Huskies down, in fact I'm expecting the upset here. In Seattle?? Hell no, not unless Washington just decides to not play defense again like they did last night. But they are aware UNI can play, so they'll try enough on defense to get it done. -

I was at Kaneland/Sterling the other night. One of the best games i've ever seen, at any level, in any sport. Spectacular stuff. QUOTE(Sonik22 @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 07:27 PM) Lake Zurich 24- Rockford-Boylan 20! Final 4 baby! But there is bad news one of our defence's best players is in the hospital right now from a broken rib and a pierced lung so pray for him! His name is Kyle Skarb and he's a 2-star prospect that has commited to NIU so pray for him. You mean collapsed lung?? That's really weird, an NIU player (DB Bradley Pruitt) had that same injury earlier this year. He has come back to play though, hopefully Skarb has a simlar speedy recovery. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:07 PM) Iowa defeats the Citadel. Freeman had like 11 dimes, ran the point great, that Looby guy had like 14 rebounds, and Cyrus Tate looked good in limited action (ugh, NIU had him signed, sealed and delivered once upon a time...). But the story was Haluska, he was en fuego. I still think this Iowa team will be down though, but who knows. -
It's impossible for anybody in the Big Ten to get as good year to year as tOSU and Michigan always are, not sure why anybody would say that. The goal is to get to the Iowa/Wisconsin level, where your in really good bowl games and steal a Big 10 title once in a while on a consistent basis.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:08 PM) Deron has absolutely no chance of being as good as Chris Paul (Paul has a great ceiling and is already lightyears better than Deron). I like Deron too, but that was an idiotic move the Jazz made. He could make it close. Deron could be a much better scorer if his shot is more consistent (which it will be one day IMO), and is already a way better defender. I agree he won't ever be as good, but he could be somewhat close, which turns that trade from one of the worst in NBA history to just a really really bad one. -

Tillman has been the Bears best corner this year, by a mile. Vasher is a playmaker, but he can't tackle for his life. However Vasher had the 9 picks or w/e last year and the infamous field goal play, so everybody will give him all the love. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 11:04 PM) Deron Williams = good Giving up a pair of 1's to take him instead of Chris Paul is still an epically stupid draft day move. If Deron Williams becomes the best player he can be, he'd only still be maybe equally as good as Chris Paul. And you gave up a pair of 1's to take him over Paul. Just not smart. I love Deron though, with that said, and am glad to see him off to such a great start. He is a very good player. -

Notre Dame lost to Butler?!?!?! Butler is only the 3rd or 4th best team in the Horizon this year, that's a horrible loss. Also, Boston College got run out of their own gym by Vermont tonight. Wow.... QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 09:06 PM) Illini open the season with an 80-35 win over AP. Looks like Jamar had a good game, hope his injury is nothing serious. That would be a disaster if it is. As for the game....I'm glad Carlwell isn't redshirting, and I wish Semrau was (but then again I said that a couple weeks ago). The length and depth of the bigs on this team is going to give teams all kinds of hell trying to score. Should be interesting to watch. -
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 07:28 PM) If there's any justice in the world, a general manager out there will pull a Dave Dombrowski and overpay for one of our starting pitchers. It's just annoying to me how fortune falls onto the hands of New York -- a team which doesn't need it. Even if none of the prospects pan out, it's far better than say a compensation pick. Considering what Sheffield cost the Tigers, in a pitching market where even Jeff Suppan may command 7-9 million, anything less than two quality prospects is a travesty. Please lord, have someone overpay for our players. Other teams are doing it!!!!11 Somebody needs to get you some Prozac or something.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 05:18 PM) They just said on PTI that Steve Mariuchi is no longer a candidate for the vacant MSU job. I don't understand how they let him get away. Who are they going to get who's better than Mooch? It's not about that. They have to keep the MSU tradition of coaches who will recruit awesome, and then coach like crap, get nothing out of great talent, and lose all big games, many in which they have a late lead. They don't think Mooch could meet those lofty expectations I guess. -

Patrick Beverley lit it up for 29 on 11 of 13 shooting tonight. Good thing Illinois wouldn't offer him due to "missing transcripts". QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 08:30 AM) Yay, ISU opens up tonight, against thei UC-Riverside Fightin' Gages. I'm glad you guys came back. Gage woulda never let you hear the end of it otherwise. -
This is going to be hilarious when he busts and they have wasted 100 million plus on an unproven Japanese pitcher. Kaz Matsui, pitcher version.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 02:19 AM) Don't get mad at me for hating on U of I because this thread is a U of I lovefest, but...what a dumbass Benn is. He's going to a s***ty football school that's not a regional pick for him or anything. On top of that he can watch Zook blow multiple games from the sidelines while his talent goes undeveloped. Then again, I guess when the team on the field doesn't win anything the fans have to root for recruiting victories. Spoken like a true fan of those mighty Tigers. They call you guys Misery for a reason.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 9, 2006 -> 08:53 PM) Marvin Austin is close with Locks and knows Benn, so he could be coming as well. If he comes, Wilson might follow. Go get em Zooker. I'm hopeful on Austin due to all the connections, but he loves FSU.....Martez Wilson is a very real possibility though, and hopefully so is wrestling Josh Brent away from Ohio State (although he's a 4 star, but yeah, umm good enough lol). Gotta figure out a way to get Robert Hughes as well, RB depth is needed.
-
Great day for the Illini, and Benn won't be the last 5 star in this class either.....damn Zook can recruit.
