  1. Passan is good: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26002896/the-bryce-manny-stalemate-latest-mlb-free-agency This is fantastic and does not roll out numbers but it does suggest what we've all kind of been suggesting, that 250M is too low and 300M is too high. Maybe 280M is our end point? For Manny at least.
  2. When Jordan was in the NBA he pushed the yearly salary to the number it had never gotten to before (at least as far as per year payment). Now he himself has become an owner. He had goals for that "money he would never spend," just on a bigger stage than any of us can fathom. Maybe a MLB player wants to be an owner one day so he can feed off active players' talents for the next row of yachts. Whether we like that mindset or not, it's silly to expect a generational wealthy person has no dreams left. That's projecting our own thoughts on it more than operating in reality - the false idea that with a certain $ amount we would be set and just on a beach til the end of time (or rather, the false idea that everyone can and will think that way)
  3. The players are going to be just as excited about taking 30% off their paycheck as you would be. People never apply their advice to players to themselves. With pro athletes it is always greed for some reason. But if you walk into a meeting with your boss, how excited are you about forking over 30% of your next raise without a hassle?
  4. People here are taking 'fallback' the wrong way. It is about money. The Sox have been in the rumors as the team willing to spend the second most money. That's what this is all about. Philly is like NL-White Sox. Harper going there wont be about them being more ideal than us as a fit. It will be pure dollars. These are the free agents who are setting the union's playing field for the larger negotiation to come
  5. MLB players who dont run hard..isnt that...like..all of them?
  6. Landing both players is a longshot but the things you can say for that hope are: 1) It's hard to get future payroll this low 2) The Sox seem against the Cub model of major-pitching-FAs and risking contracts with post 30-yr olds 3) If Bryce just frankly likes Chicago, and Manny likes being with his pals, it could be enough leverage 4) Jerry's old 5) Is this stalemate simply because they want to get more teams involved, or is it because the two agents want the other to go first? If it's the latter, and Manny signs first, then there's a quick flip Bryce can do, which would screw over Philly. 6) The tv station angle
  7. iamshack is a really good writer. i dont know that ive seen him break anything but hey, love his work
  8. 'safety net' doesnt mean 'being used.' i'm not sure why people are taking it that way 'safety net' means we're the team offering the 2nd most money to 1 of 2 guys.
  9. Can someone explain to me why Olney's rumor today is considered any different than where all the rumors have been headed for 1-2 weeks? Philly gets Harper with the biggest contract of the offseason, Manny settles for 2nd biggest contract with Chicago. How's that out of line with Nightengale, Morosi, or anyone else?
  10. Sox as safety net is a rewording of what the rumors have suggested thus far: Phillies are waving the most money, prioritizing Harper, the #1 free agent. Sox want to pay the #2 free agent of the class so as to use the Phillies' spending to their advantage Sox like both players , as anyone would, so the whole thing could flip I dont know if this is anything new. I think the Phillies are a situation very much like us, but we'd be a backup plan because of total $ only.
  11. If he's going to pose as Alonso's cousin he should get the last name right in his bio
  12. we have the gloves, we have the shoes. now lets add all the in between
  13. The Yankees fully stocked their positions. No need to even talk about them anymore. The only way for them to still be in this is to trade Andujar out and make room that way, but theyre not going to just dump someone that good to a suitor and take a reduced return to make it all work for ST.
  14. Dont want to get your hopes up but lets go to a live look at Manny Machado's cow from the farm he owns:
  15. I am planning my Machado signing party. Inviting all my friends. Invites are out, it's time.
  16. Peggy Kusinski's son, not a random. For what it's worth. Had the Joc talk before Rosenthal, same day.
  17. We can get Sale here with an offer of creative control on uniform giveaway day designs HO HO HO
  18. I dont know if i get the White Sox mentality that we want the offer to be higher. I want the offer to be higher if it has to be higher. But the main goal is to land Manny, and the bells and whistles of it are just more evidence we're all pawns in this game. I want his total price to be lower so we can also get Keuchel or whatever else down the line. Every bit of payroll helps re: JR's tendencies.
