QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 09:22 PM) Avi on deck...doesnt have a good ring to it anymore If you get him up with a runner on 2nd he's actually still decent, that's when flipping the ball weakly to RF for a single can work.

Welcome to the big leagues kid. HBP and then that thing. Deal with it.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 09:03 PM) And he struck out the side. Geeze Outside of the walks Karns has been filthy. The good news is he's also close to 50 pitches through 3.

Man Eaton aced there.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:34 PM) I'm fine w that argument, I'd probably play Boni out here too, but I understand why they didn't. Then they shouldn't have signed him. Find a different RH bat. The moment we signed LaRoche we needed one and that was seemingly why Bonifacio made sense to people in the first place.

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:36 PM) Need a quick inning from Q here or we are in trouble 8 pitch inning.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:37 PM) Ehh I didn't say "great"

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:36 PM) Need a quick inning from Q here or we are in trouble 1 pitch 1 out a good start?

That was a pretty impressive catch.

QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:35 PM) I didnt like the swing with the ball almost near his hands So far it looked like he's had some serious cut inside to the righties on the fastball pitches.

QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:32 PM) Tylers been having some bad at bats...that was definitely one I think that's on Karns. This guy has been impressive so far.

Karns had some good movement on those pitches to Eaton.

Nice pitch to knock out Cabrera

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 07:50 PM) Roster construction. Who exactly was a better fit to DH against LHP? Shuck? No, he's a lefty too altho hasn't shown extreme platoon splits, still not gonna DH him or put him in RF against LHP. Bonifacio? Wasn't going to be Gillaspie. Beckham...well he'd ready be a 3B versus the LHP.Soto? Then you have no backup C...you get the point... Now with Trayce they can him him in RF (better for D) and DH Avi who shows a notable platoon split favoring LHP. Yes, Bonifacio or Beckham. If Beckham was playing for Gillaspie and you need Soto as a backup C...then put Garcia at DH and Bonifacio in RF. That's what the plan should have been from the day Bonifacio was signed. If we weren't willing to do that then we should have found a different RH hitter and not signed Bonifacio.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 04:56 PM) The biggest problem is that most Republican primary voters don't think those things are dumb. Just to note - "who do you think the Republicans should nominate out of this field" really is a fair question that the Republicans ought to be able to discuss without having people like me come in and offer those sorts of hits. Feel free to make a more detailed point along those lines if you'd like, but both sides should have some ability to discuss their own primary

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 04:24 PM) I just want to see some one other than Avisuck. I like the improvement TT has shown this year but really, his stat line suggests he's still got a lot of work to do to become a solid player. He's still on a 100K/500 AB rate at Charlotte this year and his walk rate has dropped noticeably compared to his previous several seasons. That K rate is an improvement from where he was the last couple years and that's important, but if we're adding rips like that into Avi's name, we should at least be honest about what TT is likely to do, which is to struggle making contact.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 04:15 PM) They're intertwined, so I don't think there's an issue providing that instruction. SYG is just a subset of self defense law. Then don't say "SYG never came into play." The judge obviously had the ability to include that clause as it is Florida law, however the claim that it didn't come into play is verifiably false. It just didn't take the form of a SYG hearing.
-
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 04:03 PM) And it was ruled self defense, not syg. Because "Self Defense" had the SYG text built into it by the judge. One of the jurors also referenced that law/standard in comments after the trial in explaining their vote, FWIW.

Nick Hostetler Promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 03:44 PM) To me, it looks like they moved Laumann out of the position. Kept him in organization because this is what Jerry Reinsdorf does. the alternative could be involved in the same process but with more wide-ranging responsibilities, promotion with more salary but still oversight of the same role. We saw something like that with Kenny. -
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 03:01 PM) And all but one of the cases in Florida since then, where the media has been screaming 'stand your ground! Stand your ground!' have been self defense, wherre SYG never came into play. Just to stress, this continues to be a false statement in the specific Trayvon Martin case that threw a light on those laws in Florida and elsewhere. Although the defense never requested nor received a "Stand your ground" hearing, the specific text of "Stand your ground" was included in the judge's convoluted instructions to the jury. They were specifically told to consider that "Zimmerman had no duty to retreat" in that case in the judge's instructions. While there was no hearing, the SYG law and its exact text came into play in that case without one.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 02:46 PM) Another Donaldson HR. Is he the favorite for MVP in the AL? Tex, Trout, Cain, have to be up there as well I'd still put my money on Trout, especially with the Angels currenlty in the WC spot and the Blue Jays out of it...but close enough I could see it change.

Sox have tried to sign Samardzija to a long term deal

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 02:30 PM) Dan O'Dowd was asked if he would give Shark $100 million. He said no because he isn't an Opening Day starter. He really might not be a #2, and in 3 or 4 years is probably a #4 or #5 at best. His reputation has always beat his actual performance. He did have a good year last year, but this year's performance shouldn't be a shock. He's been very good a lot, and horrible a lot. Not much domination, and seems to be having a tough time missing bats when he has to miss them. I think they want the draft pick and are probably very happy Samardzija wanted to test free agency no matter what. I'd be shocked if they are willing to go very high for him. And I don't think he is going to get $20 million a year for 5 or 6 years unless he goes on an unreal dominant roll the next 2 months, which appears very unlikely. Wow I genuinely agree with you (smile). I think he's definitely pitched himself out of a $100 million deal this year, but I could still see someone pushing a James Shields like 5/$75 deal for him. $15 mil per year if he's a 3 fWAR pitcher, which is about what he's on pace to be this year isn't obviously terrible on paper and you could probably backload it a bit. If my team were pitching starved and I had money to spend (say, maybe someone like the Blue Jays this offseason? A team that could use pitching to stay competitive after a run this year) that could be a sensible move for them. The one thing he does look likely to do is eat innings, and that will help your rotation and your pen if you don't have strong starters around him. -

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 02:10 PM) And I would drive on bye. Want nothing to do with Samardzija after this season ends. One remarkable thing might be...he might have pitched so poorly overall this season that you could legitimately see his price dropping into the range where the White Sox could afford him. Why they'd want him after this season I have no clue. But since I think it's a terrible idea, I assume the White Sox will do it. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 01:58 PM) with my opinion on whether i would want him back or whether he would be worth it, but in ref to the bold. it is at that juncture, the sox will be in the driver seat. a team friendly contract is and will be on the plate, that is the sox deem it worth it. Do you think James Shields's deal counts as a "team friendly contract"? He had to wait until the end of the FA period, he got a lot less than I thought he would get, yet his contract is still imposing enough after only 4 months of baseball that it seemed reasonable for San Diego to think about moving him at the deadline just to clear the contract.
