QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) I guarantee they win 2, if not 3, of their last 4 games. That's the Bears for you, not good enough for a playoff berth, not bad enough for a top draft pick. This sounds about right to me as wel. -
"threats" on facebook turns into Supreme Court case
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 01:57 PM) The standard is whether a reasonable person would take that as a threat. To me, it's much easier to gauge the seriousness of that statement verbally rather than via text. It may make a defense easier to mount by saying "I was just kidding" but a tweet saying "I know where you live I'm coming to your house with my gun" seems like it should be a threat taken seriously by law enforcement in all cases. I get the feeling right now that it typically isn't. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 01:06 PM) I can understand that and I don't think the internet gives you an automatic license for threatening speech. But I'm wary of saying internet speech is the same as verbal speech. I'm a very firm believer that text alone does not provide appropriate context or tone, which means text can be taken out of context and manipulated (obviously some text is going to be direct enough, but not the majority). I'm genuinely uncertain about this, if I yell "I'll f***ing kill you" at someone, does that cross a legal line? -
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 11:31 AM) Keith law Grandal does a few things well but receiving isn't one of them. Pitchers preferred throwing to Rene Rivera. https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/539455241268514816 So wait, why do we want a catcher who isn't all that good at catching? Our DH spot isn't very open.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 10:32 AM) Dan Hayes said that since the sox got Laroche to dh and split some time at first and the sox are wanting to upgrade left field with a likely LH bat that viciedo is odd man out. Said likely to deal him for a young bullpen arm. Viciedo did hit 21 home runs which is tied 25 in al and 46 in mlb. Still young enough someone would probably take him. Dunn only hit 22 home runs and we got a young pitcher back for him. I continue to say that as a GM I would not give up a "young bullpen arm" for Dayan Viciedo. I'd rather have the young bullpen arm. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 09:33 AM) I'd rather get and move Beckham to the OF, have D2 start or call up Jared Mitchell before I go near the scum that is Delmon Young. Someone will sign him to be a most of the time DH and there's a decent chance he won't be terrible in the role. It won't be the White Sox. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 06:03 AM) Why do I have a feeling that if Hahn pulls off a trade for Samardzjia he'll turn around and sign Melky? Because it makes no sense to trade for a guy about to leave your roster as a free agent and then run Viciedo out as a corner OF.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 10:48 PM) What makes you believe this? If Viciedo's value is so low that he can't be traded it wouldn't make sense that a team trying to contend would start him. Exactly. He's such a terrible option as a backup that the only way it makes sense to have him on a roster is as a starting OF/DH on a fully rebuilding team. No team would willingly want to give up a player and pay him $4 million unless that player is also a salary dump. I'm sure the Red Sox would take him for Victorino for example, but that's a salary dump. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 06:31 AM) there is a lot of if that may not be answered. no matter, I really Emilio Bonifacio as the other platoon person. he hit lhp like crazy. last yr was a off yr, so he is a good gamble for a rebound, if not, a perfect partner for DV. on a side not, I can't remember why getting Delmon Young is a bad idea. any help will be appreciated. well, first of all Delmon Young is an ungodly terrible fielder and we are already carrying 1 DH on this roster, so there's literally zero roles for him. Secondly, I'd expect the White Sox to have less of a problem signing a steroid abuser than they would a guy with this on his record. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 10:18 PM) It would be shocking if he is non tendered. And once he's tendered a contract, IMO he's your starting corner OF next year, because I don't know why anyone would trade anything for him. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 08:57 PM) I forgot, isn't this week a decision is made with regards to final players and the waiver draft or something like that?? if it is, there should be some more players added. We have to offer Viciedo arbitration or non-tender him this week. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 08:39 PM) i have always thought that he might be the person to take over there, but i was reminded by posters that he hardly ever played there. nice conversation going btw. They worked him there a tiny bit in the minors last year and I wouldn't be surprised to see him there a few times this year if they bring in a LH hitting OF, but we absolutely can't pencil him in as a starter there on a plausibly competitive team. Which of course, brings up the fact that this is decision week regarding what we're going to do with the corner OF on our roster. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 08:22 PM) 100% agree. Sanchez is a nice little prospect, but his upside is incredibly limited. Semien has a ton of potential with the bat, but I think his lack of loud tools causes some posters to sleep on him a bit. That and him being forced onto the major league roster last year before he was ready and struggling as a result. The kid outhit super prospect Joc Pederson in the Southern League in 2013 on his way to winning league MVP. Last year he was incredibly productive at AAA, which carried over into his second stint with the Sox last September. Marcus has pretty much dominated the upper level of the minors and deserves a legit shot at a starting job with the Sox. Giving Sanchez a starting job over Semien would be a huge mistake IMO. The problem is I think you're counting only one side of the ball and I think that Sanchez is right now a much better defender than Semien at 2b. With development and work, Semien could improve, but that is an issue. I think there's enough at bats for Semien moving around between 3b, DH, 2b, and maybe corner OF depending on who they bring in, and that might give him time to work on both the bat and the defense while we see if he can earn a permanent spot. That would take advantage of Sanchez being a better defender and give them both a chance to adapt to the big leagues. -

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 07:44 PM) Let me clarify my previous comments about Diaz. I've never seen him play, and really know nothing about him, except what I have recently read, and sighted here. You may recall, I posted a bunch of quotes from various sources on the Net. Those comments seem to all suggest that he is a good defensive SS, with a canon for an arm. I'm the one who can't figure out why so many here have an entirely different assessment. I'm not advocating that he be given playing time, I'm simply trying to get an objective and accurate scouting report on him. For a guy to be a solid fielder, I'd expect to see 1 of 2 things in his stats, either he puts up few errors (is fairly reliable) or he gets to a ton of balls per game. Diaz does neither of those. Saladino outdid him on both of those last year. There's always a small caveat related to "Maybe Charlotte had a ton of ground ball pitchers and Diaz's team didn't" that could play into it, but even then Diaz still has piled up the errors at every single stop and shows no sign of getting better. -

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 07:08 PM) Do you rate Saladino as a better defensive SS than L. Garcia's and Diaz? Again, irrespective of offensive ability. I'm asking only about defensive prowess. Do you think that Sanchez, who is purportedly much better suited for 2ND, is defensively behind all three of the players just mentioned? I'm surprised, as I thought that Saladino was just barely adequate defensively, but had a decent bat. I'd say that Sanchez seems to be behind those players. I have no reason to have any confidence in Diaz and no one can figure out why you do. Just looking at the general numbers, Saladino gets more putouts per game, suggesting he gets to more balls, turns more DP/game, and has shown improvement in cutting down on his errors and improving his fielding %age that Diaz, despite being older, has not shown. I find no reason in the numbers to think that Diaz is as good as Saladino and that Saladino has much more potential to get better. Maybe that's somehow all in the pitching staff and we can't make a 100% determination from minor league fielding statistics, but Saladino's season last year is solidly better than Diaz's season last year on a per-game basis. No one would look at a 25 year old piling up that many errors without picking up a high number of putouts and expect them to be an elite defender. L. Garcia I can only go based on what I saw in the big leagues and he didn't overly impress at any position. Now that's certainly affected by the fact that they never put him at any position to give him a shot, but he looked like a jack of all trades, master of none. Put him at SS in AAA for a full half season and maybe I change my tune on that, but as of now Leury's in that "I can't ever remember being impressed by his fielding" file. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 06:20 PM) Agreed. 3 years after the trade, Washington will have one division title from it and the Rams will have zero playoff berths. That's why the Herschel Walker trade was so significant, it helped create a Super Bowl dynasty. And during those 3 years, Washington also had one year where they took a major cap hit penalty that really hammered their team's depth. That can't be forgotten either. -

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 06:22 PM) Who, in fact, do you consider is the best defensive shortstop, in the organization, among the guys who have played at least at the AAA level? This is almost certainly Tyler Saladino based on the way the org has treated everyone. He might well have seen a visit to the big leagues last year if he hadn't had a major injury and Tommy John Surgery IIRC. Even with that, he seems like an extremely fringey big leaguer. He's probably a quality defender there but he's not elite. Stranger things have happened of course, he could come up and catch fire, but really no one would ever consider this team a legit contender with Saladino as the starting SS coming into next year. He may also not be ready to play to start the season at all. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 05:35 PM) Of course, I should have included that for sure I just assumed the word recent was included in such a way to remove that one because it's the obvious super bowl era champ for lopsided trades. -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) I remember when the Redskins traded their 1st RD picks in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2nd RD pick in 2012 to my Rams to move up a couple spots to take RG3. The Rams then used some of Washinton's picks to pick up some more draft picks. In total, the trade looks like this..... Rams trades: QB Robert Griffin III Washinton trades: DT Michael Brockers, CB Janoris Jenkins, RB Isaiah Pead, G Rokevious Watkins, LB Alec Ogletree, WR Stedman Bailey, RB Zac Stacy, and OT Greg Robinson. Could this be the most lobsided trade in recent NFL history? The Rams still have to convert all those picks into wins. No one will care about a lopsided trade if they remain a 6-7 win team for the next 3 years. -

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) Cespedes for anyone other than Rodon and Anderson is a no brainer imo. Shark is different because of his contract but if you can get him to agree to an extension as part of the trade then ditto. The team is nicely setup to win but they need at least 2 more good pieces. Shark and/or Cespedes would go a long way towards getting back to 88 win territory. Why is trading for 1 guy who is about to be a free agent a "no brainer" but trading for another guy who is about to be a free agent only makes sense if you can get an extension agreed to? -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) This is from 2010, but a very interesting article about how the McCaskeys are holding the Bears back financially and on the field. And there may be light at the end of the tunnel. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/0913/nfl...ets-midway.html While i totally agree their stadium concept is a disaster, I do have to note that the "The Bears have not been at or near the top in payroll" clause is no longer true, if it was even true then. First page I found compiling them this year has the Bears having been in the top 5 in the league in payroll for both 2013 and 2012. One thing that is holding them back in payroll this year is having a large amount of dead cap space for cutting Peppers, but that's money that they did spend to bring in a top flight free agent player at a position of need. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 07:53 PM) I don't think Semien is ranked any higher of a prospect than Matt Davidson was last year, and I would have to think Samardzjia is worth more than Addison Reed on the trade market. Subtract for only one year of control. I would much prefer the Sox send Semien than Anderson, unless they have determined Anderson is not going to be a SS. Frankly, I would rather they hold off a year on him. Keep Semien and Anderson. I still hold out some hope for Davidson, and Semien >>>>> davidson right now. I will agree on one point, in value Anderson >>>>>> Semien. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 07:39 PM) I don't like him, so to be honest, my opinion on what is reasonable is probably not reasonable. Bit Semien and a couple of A ball guys in the 15-25 range seems fair to me. I don't know why we'd be so insistent on giving up Semien for a guy who we ought to trade at the deadline, but I've made my point now. -
QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) Amazon workers have been f***ed up and down in all kinds of ways and the only reason it hasn't been as publicized is because we don't interact with those workers while we shop. They have tried to unionize and been shut down, have had several instances in which they have been made to work overtime with no pay, and all kinds of other ridiculous things. The trick with our economic system is that we can't do s*** about it. Shopping elsewhere means cutting off our nose to spite our face. The answer to that of course is government action, because that's the only way to put everyone on the same level. But any who, that's out of the question because government is evil and a minimum wage job is freedom.
