  1. So today, Mittens made an appearance at a rally in Ohio in favor of ohios union busting law, which is on the ballot soon. Mittens has endorsed that law in the past. He was asked about that law at the rally for the law he was attending today...and responded without comment, saying he didn't know enough about the issue. That he'd commented on before. That he was at a rally for. He's so precious.
  2. So kennys going to blow the whole thing up I see.
  3. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 07:48 PM) Well the key word is appears, so much unknown when it comes to space we can easily be missing something. Hell we don't even know much about our own world to pretend to know much outside of it. Appears was chosen because we're detecting these thousands of other planetary systems with Kepler using light from stars. And we're detecting thousands. And if you do basic statistics, the numbers out there must be enormous. Just ecause we don't know everything doesn't mean what we've already established isn't incredible.
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 06:39 PM) Carimi still has work to do especially in the pass blocking dept. Webb isn't going anywhere, don't get your hopes up. Who do you think is getting pulled from the rotation when Carimi returns then? I understand why they'd stand by Webb...I just can say the same thing about the other 4 in their lineup as well.
  5. Bills put Shawne Merriman on IR.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) This topic reminds me, here is something really unlikely... what would happen if everyone in a city (or even just a neighborhood) flushed their toilets simultaneously? The water consumption would look like this.
  7. QUOTE (MAX @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:30 PM) Some studies should that could be brain cancer waiting to happen, unfortunately. And more reputable studies say he's fine. Or at bigger risk due to going through airport security.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:26 PM) I have no belief of that. As bad as he was as a hitter, and as little as he would actually play as a developing hitter, I don't see any reason to not believe he would be significantly worse than what they had. San Diego got a .230 average, .670 OPS out of their LF position last year. It takes Juan Pierre and Alex Rios to make that look productive.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:37 PM) In the history of coaching, no one who was an asshole was ever any good at it. Is this what I am to take from your point? I would say that in this particular position, if the person were to come off as too much of an asshole, he would likely alienate several players and wind up failing.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) Anything that put Frank in a Sox uniform again would make me happy. If Big Mac can do it, then the Big Hurt could certainly do it. My question for Frank would be more whether he wants to do it. It would take some severe personal sacrifices from him, including forcing him to a certain type of personality, to be effective at the job...and I really don't want to convince yet another person to take a job on this team's coaching staff just because.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) His minor league numbers + the roll he would play on the team? And based on those...there's every reason to believe he would perform at least better than the guys they had as their part-time OF's last year...and it's not unreasonable to expect he could substantially outperform them.
  12. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) And no matter how much they raise it won't be enough, because all they're doing is hurting people that cannot afford to be hurt right now...and creating a snowball effect in the process. Sonofa...we've created a Keynesian!
  13. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) Can you remember ever hearing a story and thinking how incredibly unlikely it was? JUST GIVE ME SOMETHING TO WORK WITH, PEOPLE! That people who control our financial industry would bet tens of trillions of dollars on the concept that housing prices could not decrease.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) Not if you know he isn't going to help you at all. How on Earth can you tell that a guy isn't going to help at all when he's nearly free and his floor is ~ equal to the guys currently on their roster?
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) That is what I was getting at. We seem to blow our owners for reinvesting like it's some unheard of occurrence in the baseball world, but it seems to be the norm. Really though...the White Sox have been in the bottom half of MLB in attendance every year for the last 5 years (last year they were in the top 10 was 2006)...and yet they've been in the top 7 (or higher) in payroll every year since the Series win except for 2009. That behavior is not the norm.
  16. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:53 PM) Is Epstein really going to hire Sandberg? Doesn't seem to be his type of manager, I would easily see him hiring Martinez. Did "Terry Francona" come off to anyone as an Epstein-type-manager when he was hired?
  17. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:51 PM) I can't tell if you're being facetious or if you think I was serious. That was just an example of something extraordinarily unlikely happening. Things that seem extraordinarily unlikely can become more likely when you change the circumstances. 6 miles of atmosphere is a long way for a meteor .
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) Still the point remains he will get something like 100 to 150 ABs, and that is he can stay healthy. Plus his defense isn't supposed to be the best on the planet. It is supposed to be good. There is a big difference there. But none of those are reasons why you wouldn't pick a guy in the rule 5 draft, especially if you had no other option ready at that position. You pick the guy, he gets hurt or his defense isn't as good as advertised, you let him walk head hung low back to Chicago.
  19. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:48 PM) Also if Sandberg is told the Phillie job his his when Manuel leaves you do not think he will take it? If he has both offers...I'd imagine he'd take the Cubs job. He might get the Cubs job now instead of having to wait, the Cubs might well throw a good chunk of money at him to get him away from Philly, he's got the full career connection there...and if he's interested in money, he's not going to outdo chicago on endorsement money anywhere.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:36 PM) ...which isn't "profit" at all, its equity. The club, if you go by the Forbes list, is one of the most CONSITENTLY profitable, in that it tends to make a little money, but does so year in and year out (where other clubs lose a bunch of make a bunch). It is also one of the most financially stable, as its debt load is among the lowest. But its profit margins are pretty low, just a few points. I have no idea how big the Sox's ownership group is...has there been any turnover in people owning sections of the team since 05? I'd have to imagine that cashing out some of that equity would have been a smart move in 06-07.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:38 PM) Theo is loved now by the Cubs fans, and they'll love him more when he names Sandberg the manager in a week. If he goes on to sign Pujols or Prince when free agency starts...say goodbye to any casual Chicago fan being interested in the Sox. It's pathetic, yet true. The response to that of course is straightforward. Win the damn AL Central.
  22. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:30 PM) Haven't the Sox been named one of the most profitable sports franchises? I like to think that they put a lot of their money back into the team, but I've always suspected that they're making money hand over fist. Depends on how you define "Profit", and whether you believe the publicly available Forbes numbers. In the past decade, owning the Sox has been immensely profitable...but most of that was from franchise value increases particularly after 2005.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 02:00 PM) Putting even a jumbotron in Wrigley would have a negative reaction. Fans were pissed (literally) when they talked about removing the troughs. Yeah...and they were angry for years about the idea of behind-home-plate advertising. A jumbotron or anything replacing the current scoreboard would produce riots. They would clearly like to add more advertising but that's difficult. The other thing they'd like, other than for the upper deck to stop collapsing, is to add luxury boxes...that one might be do-able with some variety of construction, but it's going to be really hard to do that without "Changing the sight lines" in some fashion.
  24. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 01:29 PM) Until government figures out how to deal with pensions the way the private sector did 30 years ago any cost saving conversation is complete bulls*** and there is no debate By the way, there's a very good book out right now about how the private sector has basically looted retirement and pension funds and turned them into a new way to push executive compensation up.
  25. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 01:31 PM) Yeah, I have no doubt that there's life out there. How evolved/advanced is up for debate, but again that's not really what I meant. I mean something like a guy climbed to the top of Mt. Everest and then a meteor hit him. What is the most unlikely thing to happen that anyone's heard of? I never heard of this happening, but I can fathom a reason why...if you're nearly 6 miles up in the atmosphere, you're quite a ways above normal ground level, and that would affect the survival rates of meteors...less atmosphere to travel through.
