  1. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 11:00 AM) Anyway, I think it's something worthy of thinking about in an "outside the box" manner. Most people tend to think a new depression would be rather civil, and I don't. I predict we'd have states secede from the union, a breakup of the US government, massive riots, civil unrest, etc... Basically the worst parts of the bible. Dogs and cats, living together?
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 10:57 AM) Organic rocks don't count as ammo! Sulfur, Salt Peter, Charcoal. Mortar and Pestle, bit of water to encourage formation of coarser grains, then some sort of projectile. Seems pretty organic and ammo-like to me.
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 08:57 AM) Does WAR take into account the fact that he pitches at Petco? Yes. It includes ballpark adjustments and is looking at things like strikeouts, line drive rates, flyouts, quality of defense, etc. It's not perfect, but if WAR is saying that a pitcher is a 1-2 WAR pitcher, that means he'd be an option as a rotation guy if he was on the Yankees, for example.

Jason Bour's name sounds disturbingly like "Jason Bourne" when he's introduced over loudspeakers. How he hasn't decided to use that techno music from the Bourne movies as his walkup music I have no idea.
  5. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 10:16 AM) If the economy goes into a depression, gold and silver will quickly become as worthless as the dollars you bought it with. I'm not quite certain where that prediction comes from?
  6. Tebow's running problem is that he's more of a power runner than a Michael Vick "you didn't effing see that" runner. That's fine for most people in the NFL...but a QB as a power runner is eh...because how does that guy stay healthy?
  7. That's the union saying "We're ready for the whole season to be lost this time".

  9. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 08:50 AM) So we're assigning the most blame to what's most easily replaceable? Oh, I see. I don't think anyone's assigned the "Most" blame to the easily replaceable guy. You say that like this site hasn't come down hard on Pierre, Dunn, Rios constantly. If Ozzie Guillen is losing games and his team isn't responding to him, then he shouldn't be here.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 08:40 AM) His career ERA away from Petco Park is 5.08. Bad. His Career Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) numbers hang just above 4. Yeah, he gets benefits from Petco, but he's still a reasonable back of the rotation guy. 1.5 WAR pitcher the year we traded him, 2.3 WAR pitcher last year.
  11. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 08:48 AM) Why not pick 9 games where Dunn struck out with men on Why not pick 9 games that Rios went 0 for 4 Why not pick 9 games that Pierre sucked Why not pick 9 games that the bullpen blew in April Why not pick 9 games that were lost to injury lots of ways to blame everyone for this season Because it's a lot easier to change managers than it is to change players.
  12. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 12:33 AM) I agree with most, but I have so many issues with threads like this. Simply put, Ozzie knows his guys much better than we do. It happens quite often where guys come to the manager and say they need a day off because they don't feel right/we're out drinking the night before or whatever else. Sometimes every guy isn't available. The point is though that you can't manage every game like it's game 7 of the world series. Seriously you could name 10 games with any team in the playoff hunt where you do this simple cause and effect stuff and its simply is much more complicated than how it's being spelled out. Most of these moves are trying to save pen arms. And if this team could hit, a lot of the "he left a pitcher in 1 batter too long and gave up the go ahead run" arguments could be erased if they hit. Also, I think I was drunk for like 6 of these games...wow. Problem is...I don't think Ozzie knows his guys better than we do any more. The use of guys like Rios, Peavy, and Humber has pretty well demonstrated that to me.
  13. Here's another gem from former Bush Speechwriter David Frum:
  14. Except that it did exactly what a too small stimulus package should have done...stopped the free-fall in its tracks, but fail to bring capital off the sidelines.
  15. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:14 PM) Yeah, we wouldn't without a clear cut replacement for him; but I could imagine a team figuring that for what his potential may be as a starter they could give us a few top prospects. It'd be a good bargain too if he amounts to anything in a rotation. I don't mean by us trading him. If a team gives up the price that it would take to fill the closer's role for 5 years at minimal cost I do it in a second (That's a huge price). That's my firesale mode game...anything can go if the price is met. I meant moving him to a starter's role.
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:37 PM) Point is, it's a lot higher than the 9% they keep reporting. Which is why "Aggregate demand" is what we're missing, because people can't afford to buy stuff
  17. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) That 9% figure is also a bunch of garbage. Unemployment is probably closer to depression levels of 25%. They don't consider you unemployed if 1) you aren't actively looking for work, and 2) aren't receiving unemployment benefits. 25%? Come on man. Even I'm not that nuts. U6 is up around 16% right?
  18. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:28 PM) No, not really. The companies you mentioned went under due to mismanagement and poor to market strategies. And GM is once again posting record profits, so is Ford. And to add to this, those companies you mentioned failed because they refused to move their businesses into the future. They kept them running in a way that the industry was turning away from...they held steady, however, instead of adapting. And so perhaps the businesses you posted are succeeding due to good market strategies and good products and not actually saying anything about aggregate demand?
  19. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) Let us know your observations on young Sox talent Sadly, almost everyone I'm familiar with got moved up to AAA already.
  20. General Motors became the largest automobile company in the world in 1931 and stayed that way until 2008. You can't really expect me to believe that anecodotes prove that there is adequate demand do you? Fine. Borders Circuit City Hollywood Video The Sharper Image Ritz Camera KB Toys Bennigans Mervyns Gottschalks Steve & Barry's Wickes Furniture A bunch of companies went under, clearly that proves that there is a significant lack of demand based on your standard, right?
  21. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:19 PM) Tell that to Apple. A consumer driven business that seems to be having no problems with demand. Citing a single business that is performing well doesn't mean that there is not a significant lack of demand within the economy.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) The fact that they are sitting on record piles of cash is the whole point. They could be doing something with it, but they aren't because of the uncertainty created by this administration. The lack of demand is a product of that uncertainty. I know the federal government is a different creature, but when you are in a situation where you know your job is either tenuous or temporary, you aren't going out and spending lots of money. You also don't spend lots of money when your biggest asset is upside down and isn't going to be going anywhere for a while because the housing system is a needlessly landlocked mess. The lack of demand is a product of the fact that we have 9% unemployment and policy makers think that's not high enough. They are sitting on that money because if they did invest it, they'd be likely to lose money on the investment because there wouldn't be customers for new products. You can see that throughout the data. Factories are idled, the construction industry is a fraction of where it was a few years ago (not just in housing), companies that actually make or do things have way more capacity than they can use because all their customers lost their jobs. That's why some of us keep pushing stimulus. If people are able to buy things, that brings that capacity to do things back online, and furthermore, if that happens by printing T-Bills, then that makes Treasuries a worse investment. Even if you got rid of rules for wall street through another round of deregulation, that wouldn't change the underlying lack of demand.
  23. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 04:08 PM) I could see another team trading for Santos and developing him into a starter. He's a fresh arm with not a lot of tear; it's not unreasonable. If you have three potential plus pitches, you should be given the opportunity. I'd consider his delivery a lot cleaner than Sale's, who everyone here is (rightfully) yelling to be stretched out. That seems like a scary big risk to me.
