2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 24, 2011 -> 08:11 PM) You know what I meant. I hope we can get this game. LeBron getting a ring is going to really, really piss me off. Lose tonight and you have to beat the Heat 3 straight and you limp back to Chicago with no confidence. It'd take a miracle to overcome that. Lebron could get hurt and they'd still probably win the series.

Carlos must like that 3 spot.

Why not? The official "Alex Rios Sucks" Thread
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 24, 2011 -> 08:12 PM) Yup, the Sox felt confident enough that Cabrera wanted nothing to do with the Sox that he would turn down arbitration to go to another team for less than half of the salary. Nobody thought he'd get half the salary until the market collapsed that winter.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 24, 2011 -> 08:07 PM) In other words, the team signing him still had to give up a 1st or 2nd round pick no matter what, even had to include a clause that they wouldn't offer him arbitration the next offseason. Because the sox really wanted those picks so they screwed him a bit.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2011 -> 08:05 PM) Why not? Frankly it is just so old sounding. There's about a dozen reasons that aren't worth wasting time repeating.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 24, 2011 -> 08:05 PM) The Sox offered him arbitration and he took a much less of a deal to get away from the Sox. Neither side wanted him back. In other words he was an unrestricted FA.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 24, 2011 -> 07:58 PM) Orlando Cabrera? The regime ran him out of town. How do you run an unrestricted FA out of town?

Payroll question
If a team loses money over a sustained stretch, they wind up like the Dodgers or Mets. That's all we need to say right now.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2011 -> 07:55 PM) Why isn't trading Buehrle a possibility? Can't he re-work his option if he's traded to a destination he wants to go to, like St. Louis? Also, it's hard to get mad at someone saying Dunn is a terrible baseball player this year. People have made so many excuses for him, but as an overall baseball player, he's worthless if he's not hitting home runs. People are still suggesting wending buehrle to st louis? Sigh

QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2011 -> 06:30 PM) Wasn't that also after they turned down C. Hart for him? Both sides denied ever talking about that. TIFWIW. I'm sure you've got a source somewhere that says that the opposite.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2011 -> 06:22 PM) Yes seriously. I know you've tried to argue that KW got all he could back for Swisher (which I disagree with), but I'll never understand what the rush was to trade Javy so early in the offseason. Personally, I think KW got infatuated with Tyler Flowers during Arizona Fall League, and pulled the trigger way too fast. Javy Vazquez had $22 million or so sitting on his contract and had basically been left off of the postseason roster. We got the Braves to absorb that entire contract and got something with a chance of success back. A year later, the Braves got a great season out of Vazquez, and they dumped him on the Yankees for Melky Cabrera, who they cut within the space of a year for being terrible.

This team can't hit LHP
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 24, 2011 -> 06:01 PM) It also would have been nice to have someone like Andruw Jones to use occasionally against LHP as well. Not that we would be in 1st place with him. He'd be taking at bats away from Lillibridge. We might well have lost more games with Jones.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2011 -> 06:15 PM) I don't blame KW one bit for the Dunn move. It was a guy who fit a need and we locked him up at a very fair contract. It's the terrible Swisher deals, the mediocre return for Javy, the ridiculous Hudson/Jackson swap and the Rios claim that have killed this team's flexibility. It's hard for a GM to miss as much as KW has the last few years. Seriously?

Question. What happens if we fired KW now and suddenly Dunn snaps out of his funk and Peavy rocks the rest of the season and the Sox grab the Central? Do we apologize and hire him back?

Keith law in today's podcast continues to expect regression from a lot of Cleveland players. Also some comments on the NL still being weaker than the AL.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 24, 2011 -> 04:47 PM) Rios Manny Edwin/Hudson Swisher Kotsay as DH Kenny's on quite a streak. Since we're on this topic, why would we conclude that Rick Hahn had no say in any of those moves?

This team can't hit LHP
QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2011 -> 04:40 PM) Lillibridge also needs to play every game against LHP. Somehow, the fact that you said this is going to wind up costing Morel more at bats.

Realistic Adam Dunn expectations
If we went entirely on what are you doing in May, and assumed that Pierre was stuck in the 1 spot, you'd put Vizquel or Beckham in teh #3 spot, since they're at least hitting some. The next candidates based on OPS would be Adam Dunn and Brent Morel (who is hitting .300 in May). I only type that of course to once again illustrate here the absurdity of the fact that Brent Morel has 12 at bats in the team's last 12 games.
