Winter Meeting Buzz
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:15 PM) The only problem I have with this scenario is with Ozzie as manager I just know we'll be seeing a lot of Adam Dunn at 1B and that would be a very bad thing. Well, if you go by either UZR or by runs saved, Adam Dunn at 1b really wasn't that much worse than Paul Konerko at 1b last year.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:13 PM) don't blame him for wanting at least as much as Dunn, he's more productive and just plain better. Only if you look at 2010 and ignore 2007-2009.

QUOTE (Capn12 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) 16 mil a season for the next 3 years. That'd be payroll suicide. Peavy for Young?

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:07 PM) crasnick: The Orioles fully expect Paul Konerko to re-sign with White Sox. Baltimore will be in on Derrek Lee, "if the medicals check out'' That came out a couple hours ago before this supposed breakdown.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:52 PM) If it's not about the money, then PK needs to quit f***ing about and say that and tell the Sox he's not coming back. If it's not a money issue then what the hell else does he want?? It's not about the money. It's about respect. (in the sports world, Money = respect with the caveat that it's ok to say the latter).

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:45 PM) Cause we'll sign a 1B to a 2 year deal, and it will be 1B/Dunn over there for the next few seasons. The Sox absolutely do not think Viciedo can play 3b or the outfield, so where exactly is he going to play? What other 1b has even talked about a 2 year deal? LaRoche? He's coming off a 1 year deal himself. Everything I've read about Lee has suggested a 1 year deal. Might well be best for him too if people think he's a health risk. No scenario made Viciedo being traded more likely than Konerko re-signing. Any other guy coming in means that DV has a role right here in 2012, right when he should be here.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:40 PM) Haha, I love it! I honestly think Viciedo will not be in the Sox organization when January comes around. Where on earth would you get that idea? If 14 doesn't re-up, then they're going to be even more desperate for a 1b/DH next year. I guess Kotsay could be available and Dunn could play 1b.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:30 PM) Anyways, I'm just saying we could probably make a competitive offer for Fielder without including any major league pitching. I don't know how we could. What would interest them. Quentin? They kinda have that but better in Braun. Sale can't be traded as anything but a PTBNL and that's a mess. Morel and Viciedo are really our only 2 legit trade pieces right now, and trading Morel makes Teahen your 3b starter again since you'd have no money left over after taking on Fielder. Basically, the best legit non-pitching offer we can make is Viciedo + Escobar, and I'm not sure I'd do that deal either considering that Fielder's going to be a $15 million or so player this year.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:28 PM) Maybe it's my old age but I cannot even recall our previous first baseman before Paulie took over. Was it Frank or was there someone in between? Wil Cordero and Greg Norton played there in 1998.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:21 PM) I would LOVE DLee, he makes too much sense. I expect an .850 OPS, with awesome defense out of him. He'll stay for a year, we can assess whether Dayan is ready defensively (I think he'll have a big year offensively and build his value in AAA), and go from there. He possibly could net us a draft pick too next year. Combine this with the draft picks from Konerko and what he most likely will give you in production and all sides really favor Dlee. The question is his physical condition, and a post a couple pages ago seemed to suggest that the Orioles were already worried.

Winter Meeting Buzz
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:12 PM) There's always a possibility they make the same offer they made for Gonzalez assuming they could sign Fielder to an extension. Not sure if Milwaukee would be interested in such an offer though. You'd be crazy to value Fielder and Gonzalez the same in a trade. First of all, one of them is a solid defender, the other is already best as a DH. Secondly, Gonzalez is on tap to make $6.5 million this season, while Fielder is looking at an arbitration raise from his $11 million deal last year. I wouldn't give up Beckham straight up for Fielder. I wouldn't have given him up for Gonzalez either, but I'd be less angry about that one.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) Fielder for 1 year, and if you can't re-sign, go to Viciedo? That might not be a bad plan, since 1 year of Prince won't be horrible prospect-price-wise. Plus unlike with signing Paulie, you don't HAVE to engage for multiple years. How you get Fielder without giving up Viciedo in our system I have no idea.

Current Compromise on Tax Cuts
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) Over-reaction, imo. They'll support him when he's running against Palin or some equally offensive Republican. I think the more important thing here is how the House Democrats react to the deal. If there's a substantial pool of Republicans who are adamant about not extending unemployment benefits for those lazy, drug-addicted unemployed, there might well be enough angry Dems in the House to block this. If they have an angry, suddenly motivated base ringing their phones off the hook... Which would be a marvel btw. Getting the Democrats to vote against the obama tax plan.

Winter Meeting Buzz
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:31 PM) I agree there's plenty of time. However, my concern is that if PK signs there is no money to find a quality bullpen arm and we will do it cheaply and suffer for it. There's so much variation from year to year in bullpen arms that I'm not sure I'm going to be mad about doing so cheaply until I have actual names.

Winter Meeting Buzz
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:25 PM) While it's only Dec. 7th., I'm concerned that the is no effort to improve the pen and that willbe the downfallof an otherwise very solid team. While I see where you're coming from, I would ask in reply...aside from the D-Backs and the Tigers, what teams have taken any steps to work on their bullpens so far? And in both of those cases, you could argue that the team really overspent. Most of the guys out there, like the whole Twins bullpen, are still available.

Winter Meeting Buzz
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:20 PM) And that KW would then overpay in a trade of Quentin for some hard throwing, not as effective as should be reliever. Which one of those relievers did KW overpay for? Was Cotts too much to give up for Aardsma? You didn't like the Danks/Masset combo? Ross Gload was too much to give up for Sisco? The nothing we gave up for Jenks and Santos was too hard? You want Borchard back and Thornton gone? Usually if you're going to rip KW for something, you do better than this.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox

Winter Meeting Buzz
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 03:16 PM) Sox-Woods rumors were just blown-up by a source. Sox feel Wood is too expensive even if they don't get Konerko. - Cowley So, Kerry Wood will be in our bullpen. Nice.

Lee or Konerko?
QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 03:09 PM) I'm trying to understand why anyone would go over like 4 years for Lee. He's 32 and someone correct me if I'm wrong, hasn't he had back issues? Because if the Yankees get 2-3 good years out of him and win 1-2 titles, they don't care about the last 4 years, and they'll write that loss off. Therefore, any team that wants him needs to beat that.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:43 PM) I'm actually stealing the number that someone just used in this thread. I'm not even sure if it is accurate or what it includes, or doesn't include. It's all BLS numbers. The BLS job listing number is 3.4 million. The Seasonally adjusted unemployed is 15.1 million. The out of the labor force number is 84.7 million, and has gone up by 1.7 million in the last year alone.

Current Compromise on Tax Cuts
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:37 PM) I number I heard this morning was 3.5 million positions open. That is with 15 million people out of work. And of course, that 15 million people out of work doesn't count the ones that have dropped out of the labor force, right?
