  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 07:30 PM) I kind of wish the Sox brass would think about it and say that we are basically where we are where we started the season, tied for the division lead ... and make a couple moves so from this point forward maybe we can steal the division. I don't want us to get rid of Beckham, Viciedo, Hudson or Flowers though, so I may be asking for something impossible to pull off. If KW can get a deal done to improve this team without giving up those guys or Morel, then on that I have total confidence it will happen. The problem is...the other guys just aren't that interesting to most teams, and the guys we could get are salary dump kind of players. KW has pulled surprises before, but I wouldn't be mad with him doing a small Kotsay replacement level move.
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 07:29 PM) the Phillies who are willing to spend whatever is necessary to compete Really? Then why'd they trade Lee in the first place? Why would they be thinking about trading Werth? The Phillies are right up against their spending limits, and they have to be disappointed with their return in the Lee deal.
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 07:22 PM) He would have made them better than a 12-15 win team. What sucked hard is that none of the draft picks we had those years really paid off. We got Noah for Curry in some fashion.
  4. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 07:19 PM) If that's your lineup for next year- barf. Bring back PK to DH (and play some 1st) and give AJ 1 more season, unless they feel Castro and Flowers can split time. Where are you planning to find the $10 million to do that if you've spent it on Haren?
  5. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 07:22 PM) I did not get to see the game today. Judging from the box score, Hudson did not pitch well. What is the problem? Do you guys think he has the great great upside or are you concerned? See the Soxnet.net game wrapup for a summary. He definitely has potential to my eyes. He's struggling the same way most rookie pitchers struggle. Some never overcome those struggles. The good ones do.
  6. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 07:01 PM) Well, I really wish that he would have accepted in 2000 and not 2010. Would that have really made the Bulls that good in 2002-2003?
  7. The rumor from the other thread is that the PTBNL is Hank Conger, catcher, who is currently on the DL and is legitimately one of the Halos top prospects. If he's on the DL, PTBNL'ing him would make sense.
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:58 PM) Anyone stop to think that Sox didn't acquire Haren cause it would have been too much money to have him in the rotation along with the other main 4 next season? Well, considering that it'd have left us with 0 money to spend next year, no 5th starter, no 1b, no catcher, no closer, no setup men, and no DH, yeah, I'd say that's a distinct possibility. 1b: Gartrell 2b: Beckham 3b: Morel SS: Ramirez LF: Pierre CF: Rios RF: Quentin DH: Jones/Kotsay (assuming both are resigned for $500k) C: Hell, I dunno. Blackwood? Peavy, Floyd, D1, Buehrle, Haren Closer: Santos. Bullpen; Torres, Thornton, Threets, Linebrink, then someone else from our minors.
  9. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 07:01 PM) Maybe, but KW alluded to trying to get Roy Halladay in the offseason and giving us "one of the best rotations ever" (or said something to that effect). So unless he was just saying that or would have included Danks or Floyd in the deal for Halladay, I doubt the money was the issue. I think KW is going for Dunn or Fielder foremost, and if that backfires, we'll see LaRoche/Scott and a long man like you stated earlier. Halladay would probably for us have still been a 1 year rental. He'd be a FA at the end of this year if not for the extension.
  10. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:54 PM) If that's the case the trade looks better for Arizona. Still a great deal for the Angels though. If it's Conger then that's at least a passable deal and it could be very good depending on that pitcher.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:53 PM) Wow Beckham, you f***ing sucked today. One of the worst all-around games of the season. You must have missed some of his early season games.
  12. Bunting? I...love bunting...
  13. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:51 PM) It's not the the Sox couldn't top something like that it is wether they would want to or not If the Diamondbacks were insisting on a major league proven starting pitcher, then we couldn't. That'd be D1 or Floyd.
  14. We've seen some of the worst check swing foul balls in this game...
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:50 PM) Ugh, no way Jones should be facing Wuertz. YEah, we have that other rotating DH to come in...what's his name...Thome? We brought him back right?
  16. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:49 PM) We should have kept Thome Yup. And it's been obvious since last year.
  17. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:48 PM) I highly doubt Trout is the PTBNL. Seeing that trade makes me dissapointed Kenny wasn't after him. I would have traded Hudson + Viciedo for Haren. Neither of them are "Established major leaguers" and it sure seems like that was the selling point for Arizona here.
  18. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:46 PM) Its certainly not ideal but if they are hell bent on using the rotating DH they should at least get guys who can freakin hit and hit for power. Jones and Thome would actually have been an ideal setup. Put Jones in the OF every time you have a LHP on the mound, use him to get extra rest for all 3 of your OF's by sliding them in at DH, you make up a bit on defense for the offense you sacrifice, and you do exactly what Thome needed; fewer at bats.
  19. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:45 PM) It would turn it into a good trade for the D-Backs, but I doubt Trout is the guy. You usually never see a centerpiece of the deal marked as a PTBNL unless they have to do that for bureaucratic reasons (and I don't believe there are any for Trout such as injury, or draft date, etc.). Usually the PTBNL's...unless it's bureaucratic reasons as you note, are mid-level type guys that you think you could benefit from more scouting, since you can only not name them for 6 months.
  20. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:41 PM) The rotating DH probably could work... if the guys you are using don't suck like Kotsay and Jones do... Really, it's not working that well for the Twins frankly. They're getting offense out of it...but it has wound up forcing them to put guys like Kubel and Cuddyer in the field because they want to get Thome's bat into the lineup. The teams that the DH spot are working well for...Boston, Texas. KC, Baltimore to some extent...teams with everyday DH's.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) Rongey was one of the main people supporting the DH by committee. And on this one, you and I ganged up and said that the team was going to regret it.
  22. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:32 PM) Wow, the PTBNL better be f***ing special for this deal to make any sense at all for the D-Backs. Rodriguez and Corbin do not look like anything remotely good, and Saunders has proven to be a very mediocre pitcher at best, outside of 1 year. Corbin looks like he has some talent, but he's only in high A ball (he's 20 years old and in high A ball and putting up decent numbers, so he's well ahead of the age curve). But that shouldn't be close to enough for Haren...even if one of your scouts is begging you for Corbin. This seems like a move that a team obsessed with getting "Major League ready talent" would make. Because Rodriguez and Saunders are major leaguers.
  23. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:35 PM) Sounds like Rosenthal was correct yesterday when he said Kenny was working on hard on getting one of the top lefty bats, either Dunn or Fielder. Because unless that PTBNL is Trout (highly doubt it), we could have easily matched the Angels offer. Honestly, when was the last time a PTBNL was an actual stud prospect but rather a mediocre, throw in prospect? The Sox used Gio Gonzales as a PTBNL the first time he was traded...because the Phillies needed to use our 40 man slot to protect him from the rule 5 draft.
  24. QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:34 PM) So, why is it that the White Sox are required to give up their best prospects (Beckham or Viceido) and then we see the best starter remaining on the market go for a bunch of garbage? Are the Sox lesser prospects so bad that they can't get pull off a trade like this? We already did that deal. It brought us Jake Peavy last year.
  25. Rodriguez is a 25 year old RH relief pitcher. He's shown some decent seasons in the minors and has been bouncing up and down this year as they've played around with Wood. Patrick Corbin is a 20 year old starter with an 13-3 record for 2 of the Angels A ball teams this year. I think Corbin might be some quality, he's young and putting up decent numbers for that level.
