QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) Looking at his full numbers, yes, he was doing good the last 2 months. I wonder why he struggled so much on the road? He only pitched 33 road innings while pitching 60 at Charlotte. I'll bet you you're looking at an April/sample size issue there. 1-2 bad starts in April and not a whole lotta innings would do that.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:03 PM) Its totally different. It would be like Fielder telling Milwaukee he wanted to be traded and also telling them which team to trade him to. No, it'd be like Fielder telling the team that it'll take 8/$225 to extend him and the Yankees offering more than any other team because they know they can afford him at that price.

QUOTE (Real @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:56 PM) Wonder if Hudson and Beckham are slightly affected by all of the talk of trade rumors, it wouldn't shock me nor would i really blame them if it made them peform subpar, hopefully August 1st will spell a lot of the anxiety The Hudson/Beckham talk has been less intense than I'd have expected.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) It's not like he was dominating AAA though. There was still a lot for him to work on, including limiting pitches per inning and being able to get lefty hitters out. Have you looked at his stats the last 3 months? Yes, he was dominating AAA.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:51 PM) How's he ready for the majors if he doesn't have enough confidence in a 3rd pitch to throw it? Because you're not going to develop confidence that you can get major league hitters out with your 3rd pitch by throwing it in AAA when you're already better than the guys you're facing?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:47 PM) Jeez, Peavy's injury was such a killer. Hudson's not ready for the majors...not having a slider makes him just a mediocre pitcher. Bah, he's ready for the majors...just 95% of pitchers need an adjustment period once they get there. The only ones who don't are guys like Stras who simply have incredible stuff. The problem is that we want him to have zero adjustment period and do so ina pennant race.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:41 PM) Regardless of everything, I think it's clear this team's success is dependent on Derrick Rose's evolution. Based on what I read about last night and all of the summer, Rose is about to take off become a top-ten player in the NBA. With some better players around him and in particular one amazing shooter (Korver), one amazing fast break player (Brewer) and one terrific inside scorer (Boozer), I think Rose becomes a 23 ppg, 8 asp guy this season. To me it doesn't matter who the 11th guy is, if Rose continues to develop he can be a Wade-esque player. There really is no limit to how good Rose can be. There's no one with his combination of athleticism and skills in the entire league. There are guys who are stronger, taller, etc., but he's quicker. Than all of them. He needs to get to the foul line more.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:45 PM) Beckham's been a huge disappointment at 2nd base. He plays the position like he has no athleticism at all. His UZR is 1.7 on the year. He's about average on everything...maybe an extra run or two given up via errors, but everything else is at least "average".

I think Gordon could have at least kept that in the IF.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) There was a lot of concern in the minors this year about how many pitches he was throwing to complete innings. Wasn't most of that early in the year though, when he was already struggling? Hudson right now is reminding me of almost every rookie we see come up...he's trying to make the perfect pitch every time.

It was right at a guy, but that was a nice swing/line drive by DV.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) i watched NBC's "Meet the Press" and ABC's "This Week." No mention of it. This is a short but extant blurb from today's MTP transcript. It's at least a "Mention".

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) Different arm angle though...I'd say Hudson throws harder but McCarthy had better curve. With McCarthy though, his effectiveness depended entirely on whether or not he was effective with the change. (Of course, that means that he had to throw strikes with the fastball to set up the change, but that pitch was everything).

So...if we want to stop talking about depth...if we assume everyone stays healthy, isn't Brewer/Rose/Noah/Deng/Boozer a very good starting 5 as well? It's not "Wade/trained monkey/Trained tall monkey/Lebron/Bosh", but that lineup can (depending on development) be as good as any other lineup in the East.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:21 PM) That change just dropped off a table. Man, we're talking about a RHP throwing 94ish with a changeup dropping off the table. That was McCarthy to a t.

The other potential implication of that belief...that Q's timing works best when he's close to 100%...is that I think there was probably something (Wrist? Shoulder? Foot?) nagging Carlos for the first 2 months of the season that we didn't hear about. Good at bat for Barton.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 03:52 PM) I can't believe so many people are salivating at the potential "depth" of this team. Depth in the NBA doesn't mean jack unless you have multiple injuries. If Rose and Noah don't continue their natural evolution, depth won't mean a thing. Was I the only one who watched those playoff games where the Suns bench and the Celtics bench stepped up and shredded their opponents 2nd units to the point that the first unit didn't even need to come back in?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) Why would that matter? Has it come to this in the NBA that not only do you get your wish to be traded when under contract, they actually are supposed to trade you to the place you want to go most? Its ridiculous. Paul is being repped by Lebron's guys now. If he gets his supposed wish, the NBA will be in a lot of trouble in a couple of years. Personally, I hope if they trade Paul, I hope they send him to the least desirable place he wants to go. The Hornets still have the upper hand here. CP3 still is basically an expiring contract at the end of this year if you assume the lockout. If the Clippers (I'll just use them as a proxy for the least desirable team possible) were to give up the farm for him...if he didn't want to be there, they'd get a grand total of 1 season out of him before the lockout and FA hit for him. It's no different than the Brewers trading Fielder right now and the Sox not wanting to trade for him if they don't think they can extend him.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) Carlos has been so close to hitting these balls hard. He's just missing them, kind of like early in the year... I think that's what happens when he's not 100%. More and more, I think his timing depends on his health. We saw that after his wrist got hit, that was the perfect example. His hand hurt, and suddenly he was a little off on his timing.

Taking a fan to their first game at the Cell . . .
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 03:42 PM) I heard they still have those great corned beef sandwiches there and beef sandwiches. It was a tradition at the old Comiskey Park and somebody said the tradition has continued and they are delicious. The Pizza wasn't very good when we were there, but a lot of the other options were excellent. I wound up having a gigantic beef brisket sammich.
