QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 11:06 AM) I wonder how much of that is cause and effect though? People of higher socio-economic backgrounds don't tend to live next to power plants and other heavy industry. Those are the same people who pretty much across the board test higher all though out school. One of the test study sites was NYC.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:54 AM) I really can't believe there are some people out there that don't think this team needs help. They must not be watching the games since all they do is call into the postgame show and ramble on about nonsensical crap. This team could definitely benefit from help. This team could also win the division without help. This team could also lose the division without help. This team could also acquire help and still lose the division. This team could also be made worse both this year and next if they pay too high of a price for help. These ideas are not mutually exclusive. However, this is not a defense of postgame caller rants.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:46 AM) Does anyone else think Kenny makes/doesn't make a move based on moves made/lack of by Tigers/Twins ? Emphatically no. KW will do the best he can with what he has to work with. If the Tigers mortgage their farm for Dunn, it won't affect KW's decision making one bit.

Will Omar play next year?
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:28 AM) Agreed, but it would be foolish IMO to bring him back next season assuming he'll be as effective as he is now in his current role. Hell, as long as we've got a backup plan, that's a gamble I'd take.

Couple studies have come out recently suggesting that there are seriously deleterious results on the intelligence level of children from having expectant mothers breathing certain types of air pollution commonly produced by fossil fuel burning. Guess that explains me, downwind of Chicago, I-94, and U.S. Steel.

Mariners (Rowland-Smith 1-9, 6.27) @ White Sox (Floyd 5-8, 3.87)
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:26 AM) I don't know. IMO, McCutchen, Alvarez, Jones > Ichiro, Guitierrez, Figgins, Lopez. Especially this season. It doesn't do much good to have a leadoff hitter like Ichiro when no one else can knock him in. You know, you're right. The Mariners have actually scored fewer runs this year than the Pirates. In the AL, that's an accomplishment.

Will Omar play next year?
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:10 AM) I'm fine with Omar being brought back if he is brought back to do what he was supposed to do this year. That is serve as a defensive replacement/pinch runner late in games and to spell an infielder once or twice a week; not to play as much as he has been lately. The reason being is like Balta said, it would be asking a lot for him to produce for a full season like he has of late at yet another year older. Of course, I have no confidence in him being used properly if brought back next year... Bah, if he's this effective, I have zero issues with him playing this much. It's just like putting Quentin out there though. You don't want to lose your season because you don't have a backup plan.

I want Ozzie and KW gone.
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) Oh no I'm sure they have their reasons to raise ticket prices. All I'm saying is you can't raise ticket prices, not produce on the field, then whine (or be surprised, I don't think our organization has whined to be fair, so be surprised is a better term) about attendance. What else do you expect to happen when such a cycle is in place? I really don't think they "whine" about attendance as much as they actually do. A lot of KW's attendance whines wind up being done right before he takes on additional salary. I think a lot of his whines are smokescreens, because he knows that'll rile up the Chicago press especially. He gave an attendance whine last year and then added Peavy and Rios.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) On another note. Has anyone seen an offense as bad as what Seattle runs out there everynight. Yikes. You haven't looked at the bottom of the NL Central recently have you?

I want Ozzie and KW gone.
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:07 AM) Maybe people would be more receptive to consistent ticket price increases (even despite a lousy economy) if the team had more than one playoff win since 2005.... Alternatively...if ticket price increases are keeping revenue roughly constant despite decreases in attendance...then they're set up well for the next time they make a legitimate playoff/WS run because that will generate added revenue in the good seasons.

The sleeper thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 09:55 AM) I am certain that the numbers for the Sox will increase and Seattle's will decrease over the course of the next 2 months. Seattle's average is almost exactly where they finished last year and within 1000 fans/game of where they finished in 2008. They're steady at that number.

Zambrano worth the risk?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) Unless a deal is worked out where we get his salary paid for, and we dump Linebrink, this would be a terrible idea. Like i said, I'd take him if we were paying him $2 mil a year.

The sleeper thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 09:44 AM) Revenue decreases? Who's even going to their games anymore? And that's with Ichiro. Seattle has a higher average attendance for their home games than the White Sox. And that isn't even noting Japanese ad sales.

Teahen cleared for baseball activity...
QUOTE (Hawk09 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) ...it seems like we only face right handed starters these days and we need something from the left side. Part of that is that the LH batters we have in our lineup were terrible for the last week. Kotsay had a walk against Oakland, AJ was awful, Pierre's been in a slump. All 3 of them had better days yesterday.

Will Omar play next year?
QUOTE (Hawk09 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 09:33 AM) If he finishes the season playing like he is now...ya gotta bring him back. Lets see how he holds up. I wouldn't say no to bringing him back. I just also won't pretend it's not a roll of the dice. If you're bringing him back...you need at least a quasi-platoon partner on the 25 man roster with him (Teahen or Viciedo or Lillibridge) and you best have someone who can take over full time if his 44 year old knees give out (Viciedo or Morel?). We're fairly deep in guys who can play 3b (at least until Saturday), so that makes me feel like it's less of a gamble, but if Morel and Viciedo are gone by Sunday, then I want more depth at that spot.

The environment thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 09:46 PM) Do you not understand that is a huge problem with this administration, and it's on damn near every policy this guy has? NO ONE knows where ANYTHING is going... and it's a product of his incompetence. Meanwhile, people like you go around screaming LA LA LA LA LA LA... corporations suck, government must regulate more, hope and change, etc. In case you hadn't noticed, it doesn't work. So, you agree with me that the Republicans should drop the filibuster and we should get working rules in here for these things as quick as possible? You can't on one hand tell me how bad it is that no one knows where anything is going and then on the other hand support the multi-month delays in writing these bills that are coming about from the filibusters. Everyone, and I mean everyone, knows that eventually carbon emissions regulations are coming. The Chinese know that. The Europeans already have them. Businesses have known that for years. The EPA has been legally required to come up with those rules since 2007. The only ones who don't believe that they are coming are the Inhofe crew. Even if the EPA doesn't release rules (which will continue to get it challenged and beaten in court), eventually there's going to be another Katrina level catastrophe that will finally push things forwards, whether it's Lebron's party getting flooded or an ice-free north pole causing parents to tell their kids that Santa drowned, it's going to happen, everyone knows it, so let's put together a good enough rule covering it.
