  1. QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 02:25 PM) The sox have to add a few younger [ie cheaper], everyday starter type guys to the 25 man roster for 2011. This year it was Santos and Beckham. Next year should be Hudson, maybe Viciedo or Morel. Yet all three are "on the block". The sox can't trade everyone who's near MLB ready. That's why I "Hope" the Sox don't pull the trigger on any of their top 4ish guys...but I'm the cautious one, and the aggressive one is in the GM's chair, and frankly he's done all right for himself.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 02:23 PM) The EPA (or really anyone for that matter, DRILL BABY DRILL!) doesn't have the capabilities to deal with spills on such a large scale. Another noteworthy point would be that the EPA likely has the equipment necessary to deal with oil spills near the surface but doesn't have the equipment necessary to operate at 5000 feet depths. That said, the EPA could have muscled control of that equipment away from the people who did have it.
  3. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 02:21 PM) It's one of my all time stupid baseball moves, along with the Rays drafting Tim Beckham. All time? Either you have a list of like 700 stupid baseball moves or you're slightly exaggerating.
  4. QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 02:10 PM) That would be a risk the sox shouldn't take. That would mean having a lot of cash in the rotation if he accepted. I'd rather the sox sign Danks to a nice deal than spend it on Lilly for 2011. If the Sox do trade Hudson...there's pretty much no way around having a lot of cash in the rotation next year unless we want a serious downgrade. What are the odds we'll find anyone to competently fill the 5th starter role (let alone 6th starter) for $2 million as with this year?
  5. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 01:43 PM) Jason he appeared to be throwing more a of a slider and not the big curve but I could be wrong. he had something nice that was moving at around 92 The last pitch he snapped off to strike out Smoak was at 87.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:27 AM) The Tigers need to punt on 2010 and see what they can get themselves for next year. Well...they are only 5 games out of the division, they have Cabrera's career year probably going on right now, they clearly have an owner who doesn't want to throw in the towel, and they have some young kids who are having ridiculous seasons. There's plenty of reason to keep going.
  7. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:12 AM) I tend to think of ESPN as a news station controlled by the dictatorships that are the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. More so the NBA and MLB. Here's my question in reply...are they as much controlled by the front offices, or is it a case where ESPN is the TMZ of the sports world and is controlled by the celebrities?
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:31 AM) My point exactly. You would think that they would be more likely to step in when things are bigger and worse, and affecting more people. I'm sure the millions of people on the gulf coast are happy they are paying to clean up Kalamazoo while they suffer. Even if the EPA is "In charge", are they actually paying for the cleanup? If so, how did they get around the "You spill it you pay for the cleanup" rule?
  9. Perhaps she saw this month's "Penis"-related thread and fled.
  10. QUOTE (G&T @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 12:15 PM) Gang violence is usually not reported on the news unless the victim was not in a gang. At least my impression is different...i've gotten the impression that they get reported a lot...as long as there is nothing else going on to report on.
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:49 AM) True, but what if he accepts...? He's going to get a $8 million deal like Pavano did. Well, he'd still probably be tradeable, just like Dunn, in that case, since it'd just be a 1 year deal with no long-term commitment. And frankly, if this team Trades Hudson, they'll be looking at needing a 5th starter next year, although once he starts pitching next year at the Cell, his ERA upwards of 5-6 isn't going to make him very moveable at the deadline.
  12. ESPN's Park Factor data on Home runs. Biggest effect on HR this year: #1: U.S. Cellular Field. #30: Target Field.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:38 AM) Strange how everyone is so afraid of Lilly going to the Twins, yet wants no part of him on the Sox He'd be a much better fit for Target Field than for the Cell.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:36 AM) The Phillies were so smart they gave up Gavin Floyd, Gio Gonzalez, Thome and a huge chunk of $20+ million to us for what exactly in return? Aaron Rowand and the ability to play Ryan Howard at 1b without having to totally cut Thome and pay his entire salary. That first part of the 2 deals you combined worked out pretty well for them.
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:24 AM) We always hear about how much Coop preaches movement over velocity. But maybe in the case of Jenks, we need to just say quit with the movement crap and throw your fastball and hook with as much violence as you can and try to blow people away. It certainly looked like that is what happened last night, and at any rate, hopefully Bobby keeps throwing like that. Because althought it was just the Mariners last night, I can't even remember the last time his stuff looked that overwhelming, and nobody would have hit him. If Jenks can pitch well, our bullpen is just epic stuff, so lets hope he found something last night. One thing you're missing though...Bobby's fastball was moving like crazy last night, and he had control of it as well.
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) Lilly really doesnt bother me too much. He is similar to Buehrle, and that isnt necessarily a bad thing to me. When he is off, sure he gets lit up. When he is on he is very good. 7 out of his last 12 games he has allowed 0 or 1 runs, thats not too shabby That's really a pretty weird way of looking at a guy's numbers...because in the other 5 starts, he allowed 3, 6, 9, 5, and 3 runs. But in this case, it's probably particularly instructive...because it's telling you a lot about how Lilly pitches. As such a fly ball pitcher, he winds up heavily influenced by where he's pitching and who he's pitching against. Those good outings you're talking about: Home against the Dodgers At Milwaukee The near no-hitter against us (Wind blowing in) @ Seattle home against Pittsburgh home against Houston On the road at Houston 4 of those 6 starts were against the 3 worst offenses in baseball. ONly 1 was against a legitimately top level offense, the game against Milwaukee. If I'm reading the weather right, there was a strong wind blowing in from RF on the game at home against the Dodgers.
  17. By the way, for anyone who would like to argue "the oil companies would never be foolish enough to try to get the government to pay to clean up their messes"...Dave Matthews disagrees.
  18. Just going to excerpt, probably a useful way to think about these numbers.
  19. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:50 AM) Didn't they think they had an inside track on extending Tex because of his Georgia roots? I'm sure they at least considered it plausible but even if they said so publicly, I seriously doubt they could have been that dumb about a Boras client. I'm pretty sure you can find posts of mine here from 2005-2006 predicting that Tex would become the Yankees 1b. He ust happened to hit the FA market the year that Giambi's deal expired.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:50 AM) We might get him regardless if we land a big bat. This could be plan B if Hudson bombs tomorrow. It would be totally ridiculous to go out and acquire a pitcher like Lilly based on whatever Hudson does tomorrow.
  21. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:53 AM) I am actually impressed how the NFL network and MLB network have been far more objective about their own sports. (Although anytime MLBN wants to never schedule Eric Byrnes for their network is OK by me) Frankly, if they wanted to actually win over viewers, they had to put out a product better than what ESPN was putting out. They could either be better than ESPN and succeed or shill for the leagues and languish.
  22. Georgia Tech and Duke have a public study out about the renewable energy potential of the Southern U.S. The money chart... The low graph is the "Business as usual" path. With small changes in policy, the Southern U.S.'s renewable electricity generation potential basically explodes. Worth noting...no renewable energy standard has made the cut in the Senate "energy" bill. Therefore, the business as usual line is also the Senate Energy Bill line.
  23. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) I'll be honest, I'm struggling trying to find a way to root for LeBron and his retarded crew. You just need to get somewhere on his list of 14,307.363 best friends.
  24. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) agreed, would be surprised if its the only move they make, but wouldn't be surprised if it is in conjunction with a Hudson move. I wouldn't be surprised either...I just would hate it.
  25. QUOTE (sweatpants @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:39 AM) Neftali Feliz and Elvis Andrus for starters. Both of them plus Slaltamachia and Matt Harrison were traded for 3 months worth of Teixeira. Technically it was a year and a half of Teixeira, they dealt Tex away the middle of the next year because they were out of the race. They got Kotchman for him, who at the time still was looked at as promising after his power showed up briefly when he was first called up.
