White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 10:39 AM) KW wants pitching depth and feels Jackson has great stuff. His numbers aren't the greatest but last year in Detroit he was pretty damn good. I think a change of scenary would do him good. His peripherals weren't that good in Detroit either, he pulled off a .278 BABIP, 30 points lower than the career .309 mark against him, to pull that off.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 10:37 AM) I think I like Hudson better than Jackson. I don't have any doubt in my mind that I do.

Athletics (Anderson 2-1, 2.35) @ White Sox (Harrell 0-0, 0.00)
Shut the doubters up Huddy.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (Sockin @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 10:11 AM) Then who is your 5th starter? Torres is likely the other pitching prospect in the deal. Marquez? Marquez hit the DL earlier this week.

What you're missing though is that very few of those benefits you're talking about are things that you won't see. For example, you're still going to receive Social Security and Medicare (no matter what the Republican Talking point says). Are you a homeowner/planning to be a homeowner any time soon? The mortage tax credit is an enormous subsidy to homeownership. Etc. It's hard to say exactly what the total numbers are, since you know, how do you count your slide of the defense spending pie and how you "benefit" from that, but it's not nearly as open and shut "they're giving my money to poor people!" as it seems. I could ask just as easily as a renter why it's my responsibility to subsidize homeownership for the people who buy extra-large houses and have their mortgage interest tax deduction (which feeds, of course, into larger houses and can't be a good thing in terms of driving bubbles). The one thing you're not lucky enough to participate in is a genuine bailout, since I'm guessing no one here is wealthy enough.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:54 AM) That's rather preposterous. Utley (they're best player) is out until September and f***ing Greg Dobbs and Cody Ransom will be filling in until then. It'd make a bit more sense to acquire Bautista, play him at 3B and keep their best current hitter around (Werth) so that they can stay in the race until Utley's return. Swapping Werth for Bautista is a lateral move akin to (as Balta pointed out) the Cliff Lee deal. Unless they got something they really liked back for Werth. It could kinda make sense since Werth is a FA at the end of this year, but man, that'd be some crazy dealin's by the Phils.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:47 AM) If they add Bautista like the si article mentions, Werth becomes expendable. That'd make just about as much sense as their Cliff Lee/Roy Oswalt swappage effort.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (joeynach @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:39 AM) If so then are back to 2003 rotation 4 guys who can pitch a gigantic hole in that 5 spot that can get a win. I noted this in the Adam Dunn thread yesterday...every other pitcher in our rotation has an ERA on 5 days rest that is a full run lower than their ERA on normal/4 days rest.

July White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:38 AM) Shirek is on rest, but he's also only 2 starts back from the DL. I don't think they are scrambling to have a starter in Chicago because I don't think they know yet what is going to happen. If they're not scrambling already then it's probably too late to get anyone there.

Only if you don't count Social Security, Medicare, state, and local taxes, sure. I'd love to have back the non-zero tax amounts I paid while in grad school while earning below the poverty line. The reason why the top 10% wind up paying most of the taxes is that they already control a huge slice of the pie. On 2001 data, the top 10% you cite controlled 71% of the wealth in this country, and I'll absolutely guarantee you that number has gone up since then. Link Trust us...you don't want to build your infrastructure based on the level of taxation that the lowest 90% of wage earners in this country can afford. It's that concentrated.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:28 AM) true but if we heard about it at 1am, KW probably knew of the possibility long before then and had a pitcher fly out red eye last night in case the deal did get done. The most likely guy to bring up though, Torres...started for the Knights last night. The other guy that might have had a remote shot at a callup, Marquez, is back on the DL after struggling in his last start. So either KW didn't know about the possibility enough to say "Hey, don't start Torres, we need a warm body to pitch on Friday night" or he thinks a lot more of Tony Pena's arm than I do.

7/29 Games
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:36 PM) It could be that Hudson might be traded and they wanted Torres fresher for work this weekend. Problem is...the day you need Torres for is today. If you thought there was any chance Hudson was going to be traded before tonight, Torres shouldn't have made that start.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:27 AM) If this trade happens today, I hope they're allowed to call up Lucas Harrell for a start rather than having Tony Pena go 4 innings and then have the rest of the bullpen do the rest. They're "allowed" to call up whoever they want...but the clock is ticking if someone isn't on their way already.

Twins get Matt Capps
This move makes the Twins better now, but it's a move I wouldn't have made if I were them.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:23 AM) BTW....look at what Arizona gave up and got/will be getting for both Haren and Jackson. Talk about buying high, selling low If you give up Hudson + for Jackson, you could say the same thing about the Sox buying high.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (Wedge @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:18 AM) I get this impression this all comes down to how well Hudson pitches tonight. You don't make trades based on whether or not a guy has a good 7th start. He could throw a perfecto tonight and that shouldn't change things.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:22 AM) I IMO the deal would be more likely to happen before he pitches in case of injury. Planes don't move fast enough to get another starter to Chicago in time.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:08 AM) What are national guys saying? Even if Jackson is used to acquire Dunn, who is our SP for the rest of the season with Hudson going to AZ? Clearly, that combination of moves would fail on its own. You have to add someone else, like Westbrook or, Ugh, Lilly.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:06 AM) True but it shows that this deal is very very realistic with national guys and our guys reporting the same. Disagree. One of the new realities of our twitter world, where no one is ever held to task if they're wrong, is that it literally becomes an echo chamber. One person tweets interest in someone, the next person tweets that it's close to done because they want to be out ahead, and then 3 hours later everyone is tweeting that it's a done deal.

The environment thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:10 PM) What does FEMA stand for? What's their mission statement? Are they a regulatory agency like the EPA? If done effectively, FEMA's job should actually be fairly straightforward on paper. When an actual disaster hits, local and state resources are almost always going to be totally overwhelmed. You knock out communications, transportation, law enforcement, etc. FEMA's job should be, right now, to sit around and think about types of disasters that can happen, to come up with contingency plans for them, and to conduct training exercises to prepare for them. Yeah you can't predict a couple planes flying into NYC buildings with much ease, but things like "Large bomb going off in downtown NYC" is something they should have planned for. Similarly..."Earthquake in Los Angeles", "Hurricane in NYC", "Dick Cheney", those sorts of disasters are obvious. Then, in the event that a disaster does occur, they need to immediately take over everything. FEMA needs to say "send us every question you have". They need to order resources deployed under their schedule, deal with all the competing agencies, be a central clearinghouse for aid information, etc. They need to be the people that you call when you're surrounded by fire and you get your radio working at last, they need to be the guy you call to send in 13 billion bottles of water, etc. Unfortunately, aside from James Lee Witt, FEMA's been pretty much nothing but a patronage position, and so it really hasn't done what it's supposed to do except for a very brief period in the mid-late 90's.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:16 PM) Aren't you happy that half the country doesn't have to pay ANY income tax? Don't you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? You're such a giver! This is of course totally untrue.
