  1. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) Dye stated that ideally he wants to play RF for two more years, then move to 1B to end his career. Dye's defense is to the point where he really shouldn't be out there, and if he hits the FA market this offseason, teams are going to know that.
  2. QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 09:02 AM) Thome's currently 38 HRs away. Given his age and propensity for nagging injuries, it's likely that he's not going to get there until early 2011. Kenny shouldn't give him a two-year deal to ensure that he hits #600 in a Sox uniform. Jim has 21 HR this season in 2/3 of the year, with a lot of time on the bench due to interleague play. If he keeps up exactly this same HR rate, he'll get there in 2010.
  3. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 08:43 AM) For every state listed, can someone else argue why the state is worthy of it's existence? If a state does not get defended, then we should indeed just start a petition and get rid of it. Indiana: Basketball players Idaho: Taters Missouri: The Cardinals are 3 games up on the Cubs Michigan: the Chevy Volt Kansas: the song "Dust in the wind" California: keeps the rest of your taxes low Alabama: the Birmingham Barons Iowa: Corn West Virginia: only place in the country mining companies are allowed to totally destroy. Utah: 6 national parks. New Mexico: who else is going to build your A-bombs? Montana: Glacier and the Beartooths. Seriously, drive through them. Mississippi: storage compartment for unused letter "S"'s. Arkansas: Frankly, I got nothing. Don't they have some hot springs?
  4. QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 08:41 AM) The 600 HR pursuit is irrelevant. Not really...it can certainly have an impact on ticket sales and marketing, and thus his contract can help pay for itself more.
  5. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 08:06 AM) A week ago in this thread the games in hand favored the cub...ooops.....this means the cub will have to use the 5th starter more often then they'd like and the Cards should they so desire will not. The Cubs are also missing 2/5 of their starting rotation right now.
  6. Official EPA rating for the Volt: 230 mpg.
  7. QUOTE (Tex @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:43 PM) a few hours ago some smart person mentioned there are a couple spots where the team probably could and should overpay. This feels like that spot. The problems have been around for a few years and there does not seem to be a solution in the organization for the next year or two. We needed to spend some money on an OF this offseason anyway. Maybe 2. We were likely going to have to overpay for one of them at least, and if we didn't overpay, we'd get punished even more on defense.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:36 PM) That was in the past. I know you might think the economy is fine now, but its really not. There aren't a lot of teams that will be throwing around money this offseason for crap. This guy is signed for 5 years at $12 million. Its more than he would get on the market. The Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox and Cubs won't be looking for high priced OF. Who else would be paying him? So, let's imagine this...let's say you're right and he's slightly overpaid. That means either he's making $1-2 million more than he should be per year, or he's signed for what, 1 year longer than would be fair? Given our holes in CF and the fact that we get him for this season for only $2 million, doesn't it seem worth paying a slightly premium price if this guy brings production?
  9. 5-3 Red Sox after a home run by Bay. Jackson lasted 4 innings.
  10. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:03 PM) ^^^^ Players like to up their game in a contract year. And he Mitchell Reported his way up that year too.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) Ibanez got 3 years $31 million. In fact, Manny and Texiera were the only non pitchers to get more than $31 million. Rios is owed $60 million. He's got himself a good deal. He's not the hitter Ibanez is. Ibanez isn't a CF though, and Ibanez isn't going to steal 30 bases a year.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) Rios is 6'5" 215lbs. He's going to lose a step or so in the next couple seasons. HE also gets to move to a natural surface instead of the turf in Toronto. That could help him go the other way. He's also been an 80%ish stolen base guy in the past year or two anyway, so he's not just running crazy; he's picking his spots.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:41 PM) I don't see that at all. Several mid-30 year olds got 3 years and $10 million plus a year last year. This guy is 28. People will pay for that, with good reason.
  14. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:33 PM) He'd be by far the most talented CF on the market and the only decent option under age 30. I'd guess he'd be offered at least 4/$48, possibly 4/52. He's coming off a down year, so that would hurt him (unless he rakes the 2nd half of this year...like he did in the 2nd half last year). The downturn in the market and his down season would combine and I think he'd wind up somewhere in that area. Next offseason, if the economy has sufficiently recovered, he'd be talking 5/$65 or better.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) Let me ask you this, if Rios were a free agent after this season, do you think there is any way he would get a 5 year $60 million deal with a $13.5 million option for a 6th? I really don't think so, but I suppose its possible. His deal would probably be a little shorter but I think that's very close to what he'd get yearly.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) It also allows the Sox to stick Danks in RF if they wanted to and ease him into things too. I can't see the Sox trading any of there young players for high contract guys. If anything I see them making prospect for prospect trades or something along those lines (basically to fit needs). And Danks is still the only near ready OF prospect the club has. Eh...I think KW will still make some sort of surprise move this offseason. Usually does no matter what. But its probably a safe bet they hold on to D2, Viciedo, Hudson, and Flowers through the whole offseason at the very least. I don't think Danks winds up with the big league club next year though; his AA numbers just scream "I need more time". He's come back to earth on BABIP and his overall numbers have followed.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) I think we just got a market value CF'er for basically nothing but a contract. Torii Hunter-lite somewhat, but entering his prime. Great pickup. And, unlike playing the FA market...we didn't have to outbid anyone...and we didn't have to lose a draft pick.
  18. QUOTE (BFirebird @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:23 PM) Would trading him make John Danks more difficult to re-sign? Yes.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:22 PM) Does this make Jor Danks trade bait this offseason? No. It does buy him an extra year to develop though.
  20. QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:21 PM) 5 Years - 58.7 million or w/ option 6 years 72.2 million. Plus about $2 million still owed this year.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:18 PM) Is it 5 years 60 mil remaining or 6 years 60 mil? Contract ends in 2014, 2015 is an option year. 5.3 years on it.
  22. Btw, I'd like to give Riccardi credit for; doing the right thing for his org., and not dragging this out to Tuesday so we can have Rios available tomorrow.
