  1. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 27, 2009 -> 12:06 PM) This is why I was cheering against the Sox at the end of the 2007 season. Gordon Beckham could very well be bust but RIGHT NOW if Kenny saw fit he could mark Gordon the centerpiece in a deal for a star major leaguer. The value of a top 10 pick is quite high. Just think, a few more losses and we could have been holding Pedro Alvarez and his .784 OPS in high A ball.
  2. The question is...can he still shoot the 3 like he did when he helped the Heat to that title?
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:48 AM) They can't have Beckham, you can't trade him yet. The last thing SF needs are starting pitchers, which is what the Sox are willing to trade right now. I don't think they would take a Chris Getz and I honestly don't think Ramirez is a good idea to trade. If they really want a middle infielder, I honestly don't see it happening. The Sox said they wouldn't trade Beckham straight up for Peavy. I think we can just stop mentioning his name as a possibility. I could see them moving Alexei, but I can't see them doing it just yet, not with Viciedo being such a key ingredient for the future.
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:35 AM) I want a Magic/Nuggets final so bad. Denver has enough athletic depth up front to be a pain for Dwight, and both teams can throw endless 3-point opportunities because both teams are deep in shooters. That'd be such an entertaining Finals, albeit a poorly-rated one by the mass morons of America. Hence Kobe and LeBron getting all the calls. The NBA long ago made the decision that the best way to market itself was to market its stars, especially the ones who make headlines, rather than marketing things like the game itself. I don't know if that was the right monetary decision, I think it's certainly had a negative impact on the quality of the game. Series like the Spurs/Pistons, or Hell, even the Bulls/Celtics, don't get the credit they deserve because the stars aren't there controlling it. Let's not pretend it's just the average fan's fault here...the NBA has encouraged it at every step.
  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:22 AM) I think the Sox are desperate for pitching, in the sense, that we have zero players in our system currently who project to be a #1 or #2 starter. So I'd say that could make it a serious need, especially given the fact that the team has quite a few offensive minded prospects, one of which (our #1 prospect) plays the same position as Ramirez. I think first of all, by the definition that seems to get used of a #1 starter, there's not that many teams that actually do have one. Hell, even Jake Peavy can be legitimately questioned given that he's only really pitched in Petco. Matt Cain pitches in a pretty big ballpark of his own. There's plenty of reason to doubt if he'll ever join that select group of 5-10 actual legit #1 starters in MLB. I'm happy to live with a group of #2-#3 starters in our rotation as long as we have like 4 of them. I can understand considering it to be a serious need, and I can understand making a deal for it using one of our middle infield guys, I just don't know that I'm sold that Matt Cain is going to be a guy who we'd trade for who would come out and win 18-20 games a season for 4-5 years.
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:22 AM) To the day I die I will believe the refs cost the Kings Game 6 (and the series) of the Lakers series several years back b/c they called a foul every time sometime dared to breath in the direction of Shaq. I also believe that they were instructed to do so. Everyone believes that.
  7. QUOTE (Cknolls @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) As for her jurisprudence: 5 of 7 cases she ruled that reached the U.S. Supreme Court were overturned: 2 by 5-4 majority....1 by a 6-3 majority....1 by a 7-2 majority....and 1 by an 8-0 majority...1 case is pending..Ricci......1 case was upheld but the Court rejected her reasoning. It's worth noting here that when the Supreme Court takes a case...they do so with the idea that they're going to be reevaluating the current law. Currently, the Supreme Court overturns something like 75% or more of the cases it actually takes up. 2 out of 7 standing is actually a better %age than the average decision in cases taken up by the high court. 2 out of 8 standing up would be average.
  8. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:04 AM) And its a deal I make. Frankly, it's a deal I don't make. I think we'd be overpaying as written, even if Poreda is just a Matt Thornton clone. If we were desperate for pitching, which we're not, and we had a glut of highly performing Middle Infielders, I could see us making that move based around Alexei, but not with the other 2 added in. Lower guys. One other thing to keep in mind when Considering Alexei...we have another Cuban whose decision to sign with us likely involved the presence of 2 other Cubans in our organization.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:08 AM) I hate to say this, but Clayton Richard is better than he is. He wouldnt accept a minor league assignment, so unless he is in our rotation, he's not coming here. If he couldn't stick in the Nationals' rotation, he better be willing to accept a minor league assigment somewhere, because otherwise he's going to be sitting at home.
  10. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:10 AM) I'm eyeing a Magic/Lakers final. I think the Lakers will struggle to win the series, I think it goes seven. If the Lakers win it, I think it goes 7. I think it's possible the Magic could just beat them senseless too.
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 27, 2009 -> 06:12 AM) Whenever people bring up demographics and the SCOTUS (i.e., Sotomayor is Hispanic), and they say things like "the most qualified person needs to be selected, not someone based on their gender/ethnicity" why is it assumed there is only one? There's dozens of possibilities in reality, and if the president wants to, say, choose a woman, he's not at all excluding potentially "better qualified" candidates. The whole thing is subjective anyway. I just find that annoying. It makes it sound that choosing a justice who is a minority or a woman automatically means that's why they were chosen, before looking at their qualifications. The thing you're missing is that the "one best qualified candidate" logic allows you to justify having a group made up of 8-9 white males deciding cases involving rights for minorities and women and you don't have to feel guilty about it.
  12. The near unanimity here makes one wonder what the Hell the NBA officials are actually being taught.l
  13. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ May 26, 2009 -> 08:52 PM) I have no horse in the playoffs but I was hoping the Cavs would make it because I felt they had a better chance at knocking off the Lakers...could the Magic beat the Lakers? The Magic have a roster that to my eyes is designed to win playoff games. They can: Go down low to a big man for 20+ points at a high %age Get a ton of rebounds/blocks out of that same guy Draw fouls on the other team's big men (all 3 of those are Howard) They're feisty, opportunistic defenders on the outside, which has so far bothered the outside shooters of both Boston and Cleveland. They can barrage you with 3 point baskets They play a solid pick and roll game They can play the inside/outside game and force the other team to spread the floor. The Magic seem like a team that is built to win 7 game series. Their 3 point shots aren't going to fall every game, but they have enough shooters that you can usually count on one or two guys getting going. If Howard gets in foul trouble, they're hurting, but Howard's been fairly good about that (sans the technicals) and their backups on D have been adequate, even if they don't give the athleticism. They have played very solid defense on the other team's outside guys and just shut down some major shooting threats (Allen, Williams). They can give the other team's star player a number of different looks on D, which is often a good strategy. They're not going to win every game, but in a way they're like the Bulls...if you give them 7 games, in 2-3 of them, their outside shooters are just going to carry the team by being absolutely scorching. And then on top of that, throw in Howard and some intelligent defense, they're going to be a real threat to anyone. Frankly, the key to a Magic/Lakers series...going to be Bynum. Gasol's decent down low but he's too timid, never really pushes to create his shot, holds the ball too long, and Howard will simply own him. If the Lakers can get a good performance out of Bynum, they can force the Magic out to the perimeter and make it a game of transition baskets and outside shots, and the Lakers can win that.
  14. The Diamondbacks need to fire Greg Walker.
  15. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:39 AM) I could see San Fran being extremely interested in Poreda. IIRC, Poreda was likely gonna be their next pick before we snatched him away. Poreda would fall in to the "Might be nice" category for the Giants. He might be nice, but he doesn't fill their needs; all he does is give them an extra year or two before their pitcher becomes expensive/FA. They have pitching. They need a bat. Guys I wouldn't part with for Cain: Quentin Beckham Viciedo Ramirez D2: the Mighty Danks Flowers (he's the right value level...but that's where Posey plays and frankly we need a catcher at some point in the next year or two) Guys I might part with that they might actually be interested in: Allen Anderson/Fields (although we've pretty well managed to destroy their trade value haven't we) Getz Shelby Etc. I don't know if Allen would interest them, but he might well be the best fit as a deal centerpiece, unless we can sell them on Brian Anderson (frankly, I think they'd be smart to try to get him, but considering how determined we are to put him on the bench I doubt they'd figure that out)
  16. Damnit, now Gameday chooses to freeze.
  17. Move the line along Anderson. Even one of those fly balls will work.
  18. Come on Paul, there's only 1 thing we don't want you to do.
  19. Overtime? You know nothing of overtime. How dare you intrude on our sacred territory.
  20. Alexei had 18 walks last year and has 10 this year.
  21. QUOTE (joejoedairy @ May 26, 2009 -> 08:14 PM) ref didnt really have a choice Ok. Still at work, only following via internet updates, just wanted to ask.
  22. QUOTE (tommy @ May 26, 2009 -> 08:11 PM) I'm jumping back and forth. Was the foul on Pietrus a good call?
  23. Rashard Lewis says "Someone stay on Lebron this time damnit!"
  24. All he does is hit dingers and make fantastic defensive plays.
