QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) Where are the intellectuals of this conservative group? Where are the Buckley's? Surely there are brilliant people people in this country that believe in small government and strong defense, is there not a one who can create a platform that isn't antagonistic and fear-mongering? I mean, of conservative writers...I respect David Brooks...uh, alright done. When your party turns on anyone and anything that could be considered intellectual, you're not going to have many. "Carl: Let's make litter out of these literati! Lenny: That's too smart you're one of them! (punches thrown)"

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 01:13 PM) I agree with this 100%. He may be able to galvanize the base (or at least parts of it) into a stronger group, but in doing so he's going to push out an awful lot of more moderate people. You won't win national elections that way. Rush Limbaugh polls lower in national polling than George W. Bush.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 06:06 AM) I remember being in Vegas in Jan of 2005, and putting $20 on the Sox to win the WS. Odds that year at that time were 30:1. Then after the season ended, I couldn't find the damn ticket. Found it 2 years later when moving some furniture, after it had expired for reimbursement. Just think, if you'd taken that $600, invested it in the stock market...well, the casino might have been able to recycle that slip of paper and reduce your carbon footprint.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) We will sell off dramatically within 14 days.. What happens March 17th? (Not that I'm going to disagree with you. I think we're still looking at a bottom in the 6000 area for the DJIA unless earnings fall off even more, and we've got terrible Feb. job numbers coming in about a week or so, just wondering why you picked 14 days)

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) My thought is this. How large and devastating would an attack be that shook our financial or commerce system right now? These institutions are hanging by a thread as it is, it wouldn't take much to do huge damage. You could literally disrupt the American way of life if you attack was effective enough, and you wouldn't have to kill many American's to do it. Think about how much money we spent after 9-11 to make America safe again, even if you discount the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. We couldn't do that again because that money has already been spent for all of these rescues and the stimulus plan. Think of the stock market sell off after 9-11, what would an event like that do to an already shaken financial sector? Retail of all shapes and sizes is in the toilet. If they attacked malls, how many jobs could be lost if people were afraid to go shopping, or to go out and eat? I guess it depends on what you mean by "large and devastating attacks". Ending the American way of life would be awful devastating to our standing in the world, that's for sure. You're making a point that we all understand but that, thankfully, for some reason they don't seem to get it. They haven't gotten it yet and hopefully they still won't.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 10:09 AM) I have a sinking feeling 2009 is going to be a disaster. Not only the stock market, but unemployment is going to go up substantially. Really? What gave it away? We were so hoping to keep it a surprise.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:52 AM) Why do they matter? They just control the lions share of the nations workforce. If they think things are getting worse, what is the worst that could happen? Thankfully those are the smartest guys in the room and they never screw things up. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:19 AM) There was a message in there somewhere? If there was, who would take it seriously? The people who believe that the stockbrokers and the people who own the most stock are representative of the rest of the country. AKA the news media. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:48 AM) Why is confidence important? Because without confidence you keep having highly respected people in the trading realm telling people not to invest anymore. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeff-poor/200...-darkest-moment Oh, and you shouldn't sell Bear Stearns stock. There's no problem with Bear.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:10 AM) that's not what I meant, is there a high probability that these web domains would be bought in August out of the sheer coincidence that this phrase is often used to show rebellion by, say, conservatives in a dem. administration. Honestly, what are the odds on that, it doesn't make sense. It is ridiculously low, and yes, there are records kept of who purchases/owns web sites. That's how this report came to be. Without that there'd be nothing backing it up. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 08:55 AM) Has this 'tea party' thing been a common phrase? Is there a history to it? There was one of them in Boston a few hundred years ago. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 08:56 AM) Why is John Yoo still employed? Because when a person gets tenure, they have to do an awful, awful lot to lose it. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 08:49 AM) Now, how would the logistics for such an attack work? Would a minor, down and dirty attack really be a deathblow? If not, does it help strategically? Not saying it wouldn't work or anything, just throwing out ideas. Think about Israel during the various intifada's. Or Iraq or Afghanistan. The pinprick attacks might not do anything near the damage that a big event does, but they are a highly effective strategy if they're deployed. Really, think about it, if you wanted to wage a long campaign of terror by say, taking bombs and dumping them in trashcans in public places like shopping centers or stadiums, what would stop you at this point? Or buying a heavy machine gun and opening up on a crowd? The thing that has always struck me as odd about Al Qaeda is that despite the obviousness of that strategy, they haven't tried anything small scale. That leaves 2 possibilities, either the U.S. has gotten ridiculously good at intercepting these guys, even the individual ones, on the way in, which frankly I don't believe given all the other people who are able to enter this country and maneuver around weaponry, or otherwise, Small Attacks just don't fit in with their belief structure. I think it's the latter. They're an apocalyptic group that believes the U.S. is going to collapse under its own weight of opposition to God and its decadence. They just aren't interested in waging an actual campaign of hurting people or hurting the economy, they want the singular event, gigantic, huge strikes because that is what they believe in.

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 09:34 PM) Hmmmm, I wonder if he's still hurting... Perhaps he strained his back looking up at all those popups that he hit in the batting cage. With all those OF's they have it might be hard, but sticking in Crede as the DH in that lineup with the 2 big lefties isn't the worst idea I've ever heard. If you could keep him from throwing his back out, he'll probably give you 25+ home runs from the right hand side.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 09:03 PM) Saw on espn scroll that Warner is in SF taking a physical and meeting with Singletary. Stupid move by the Cards. I've made a lot of bad predictions on draft picks, but I think I'm right about Leinart, the guy isn't very good. How hard can "Throw ball to Fitzgerald" really be? -
If either Colon or Contreras isn't ready early April, it makes us a lot better if Marquez can handle things for a month while Richard hits the pen.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 04:19 PM) I thought I heard / read someone say that you are the leader if after you rip that person, you then have to go back and apologize and say you were misunderstood. I guess Rush is the man. This just keeps getting better and better. The Democrats are perfectly playing this. They pushed hard to brand Rush as the GOp leade, and some how it's becoming a self-fulfilling prophesy. Press Release; the DNC jumps at the bait.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) mine too. Am I wrong, though, to say that I've never seen the leader of a party as outspoken as Steele? Maybe I'm just following stuff more, but I just don't remember the position being such a PR job as much as organizing fundraising and such. So far, Michael Steele is being for the Republicans what the wise folks in the media and on the right told us Howard Dean would be for the Democrats as he was taking that job in 2005.

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) I wouldn't mind taking a college bat (1B/DH?, CF?) at #23 and young high school arms with sign-ability concerns with the sandwich pick (Rick Porcello, Tim Melville types) and in the 2nd round (Cahill, Anderson, and Tillman are a few top pitching prospects that went in the 2nd round in 2006). Let's get out there and spend this year. It'd be nice to have a top system for the next few years to come. Frankly, and this is a good thing to say, now that we have Flowers, there's really no position we can look at the minor leagues and think "We have no one who can take this spot in the next couple years." They won't all succeed, never do, but that's a nice thing to build from. BPA all around.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 01:25 PM) Frankly, my money's on Limbaugh. Betting on a Republican apologizing for wronging Limbaugh these days is a better payoff than the Stock Market. Less than 24 hours, every single time. I think "Pathetic" is a pretty good word.
