QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 09:04 AM) Depends, if you moved Jenks I wouldn't be opposed to it. But it depends on the guaranteed years and price. Like I said last page...the only way that makes sense is if you're moving Jenks for an absolute fortune. You better walk out of the Jenks deal feeling like you treated the other team like George Lucas treated Indiana Jones.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 08:54 AM) Here's a question. If the Knicks pulled off a Curry for Marion trade (with say another piece going to Miami), could the Knicks actually make the playoffs this season? It's the Eastern Conference.

Official 2008-2009 NFL Thread

Javon Walker is out for the season with an ankle injury. Apparently, some clause in his contract actually takes this injury and makes it even more costly if the Raiders want to cut him. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) Larry Hughes must be more than 10 days away from recovery, then. Hughes played tonight.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 07:38 PM) Not when Taveras is out there for Broadway or Adam Russell and CoCo Crisp (who KW has always liked) is available. I think the Red Sox might be more hesitant to trade crisp now than last year. Crisp only has 1 year left on his contract (option for $8 million in 2010), which means that the Sox might well be able to turn him in to 2 draft picks at the end of next season, while he's a really, really useful 4th OF behind Ellsbury, oft-injured Drew, and Bay.

I'd probably prefer Kerry to Hillary there, honestly. I hope that's not sexist. Mainly I'm thinking strategically...I'd rather get Kerry out of the Senate and moved on to a position that would be his final spot before retirement, thus allowing some new blood to enter the Senate from MA for the first time in 25 years. Hillary has a strong position in the NY senate and she's still only the Junior senator from that state.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 07:11 PM) Joba, Kennedy and Hughes are the three arms everybody in baseball wanted from the Yankees. Not the two we got. Kenny deserves the benefit of the doubt for the deals he made for Danks, Floyd and Quentin. But I hold my breath every time he makes a deal because he is usually runs the risk of paying too much. and he has certainly acquired his share of scrappers. On the other hand though...here's an honest question. When is the last time the Yankees traded kids for a veteran and we wound up feeling like the Yankees shouldn't regret the move? There were guys all over baseball for the last 10 years who started off in the Yankee system and got traded away who became quite good.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) Well, if it was me, I wouldn't even have Boras as my agent. I'd be my own agent. And that's why you'd be poor.
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 06:52 PM) Some things are more important than money, one of them is not playing for an organization like the Nats. Why are we thinking that Boras wouldn't get an opt-out clause? JD Drew got one. Manny created one. ARod got one. Burnett got one. I'll bet there are other guys that get them who we never hear about them because they suck so badly (Zito).

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 05:59 PM) That's great to hear. He deserved some kudos for his fantastic season. I agree with all the other picks except for Derek Jeter, no f-ing way jeter deserved it over lots of other SS's in the league. Actualy, my instinct said that at first too. Then I looked at the qualifying AL shortstop stats. Jeter was the only AL shortstop hitting over .285. His .771 OPS at SS was 2nd to Peralta's .804. The next highest OPS for an AL shortstop was Michael Young at .741. Cabrera was 4th, with his dominant .705 OPS. You could make an effective case that Peralta should have beaten him. But really, that's the only guy who's even remotely close.

QUOTE (Shadows @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 06:38 PM) Man get out of here, I surely hope you are joking For 200 million I would sign a lifetime contract with the Nationals.. regardless, he could prolly get similar money from a better team but still, 200 million to play a game for 6 months out of the year is nice no matter where you are playing. Knowing Scott Boras, they'd insert an opt-out clause midway through as well.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 05:07 PM) Swisher cannot be the Yankees everyday firstbaseman. If he really is and I was one of the people who bought the 850,000 suites or the 2500 a game seats, I'd tell Hank and Hal they have some explaining to do. Don't worry...the Yankees have not yet begun to spend. They are lopping what, $90 million off their payroll this year already, let alone the new ballpark appearing? They will fill each and every one of their needs. Swisher may well be their everyday 1b, but he may also wind up in the same role he had with the Sox if the Yanks sign Tex. Or he may be their everyday 1b if the Yankees sign Manny. And so on.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 04:59 PM) Konerko was towards the bottom as well. Out of Konerko and Swisher though...1 guy was healthy most of the year. 1 wasn't.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 04:50 PM) I would only look at Wood if we traded Jenks, hes not worth the draftpick we would have to give up to acquire him as a mere set up man. Hes basically the same type of pitcher as Dotel and we are already on the books for his 6 Mil or whatever. If you think about it in terms of a trade...we'd be trading away: Bobby Jenks Our first round draft pick in 2009 Probably about $15-20 million (the difference between Kerry Wood's contract, maybe 3-4 years at $10 million a year and Jenks who's just hitting arbitration) We'd be getting back: Kerry Wood Whatever the haul for Jenks is. To make that deal balance...you need a monstrous haul for Jenks. You need someone to do something stupid. You need to go to the Rays and have them offer you David Price or something like that. You need to go to the Mets and have them say "Here's David Wright". And maybe more, depending on the salary constraints.

If you've got a broadband connection, these are really, really cool computer simulations of the ground shaking associated with this event.

Oh, by the way...right now, the official 40 man roster at Whitesox.com currently stands at 39 after adding Betemit and Marquez...but that's including Cabrera, Crede, Griffey, and Uribe.
-
On the topic of guys like Garcia, Colon...etc...it's probably worth pointing out now that after the trade today, the Sox have now at least 2-3 viable 5th starter contenders for ST...Richard, Marquez being obvious, Broadway and Poreda probably still being a step behind. If Vazquez winds up dealt, I could certainly still see one of these guys being signed, but I feel like KW wouldn't have traded for a nearly major league ready RHP who's supposed to be an innings eating guy with a sinker if he didn't expect him to get a shot soon.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:00 PM) Jose isn't until maybe after the 09 all star game? So you might be answering your won question. I don't see Wood a starter, and if he is he wouldn't stay healthy enough to last all season That was the point of bringing up Contreras.
-
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) I think we could trade above 900 on futes today, 905 to be exact. If not today, definitely tomorrow. It certainly seems to me like we're locked in to 1 of those 1000 point cycles right now, where we're bouncing between 8000 and 9000 and no one wants to cross either number until something much worse or much better comes in. So in other words, today's the day to sell!
-
QUOTE (Wanne @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) Can't see how this is a better team offensively from last year....probably a tad worse IMO. Guess it all depends what Getz/Nix, Fields/Betemit bring to the table. Can't remember who posted it earlier...but I'm still not 100% comfortable just handing the SS position over to Lexi. It's probably a low to moderate offensive downgrade...but there's plenty of room for it to turn in to an upgrade, and all that needs to happen is for Konerko and God to stay healthy or Anderson/Getz/Nix/Fields/Betimit to step up a notch or two above last year's numbers, and all of those guys are young enough for that to at least be possible.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) AS of now, next year is looking like C AJ 1b Konerko 2B Getz/NIX 3B Fields/Betemit SS Missle Rf Dye Cf Anderson Lf Q DH Thome Don't call me out on this, because i think we'll get a CF (not TAVERAS!) But in two years it gets really juicy. We're talking Allen, Beckham, Danks 2, Viciedo, Armstrong and maybe even Shelby on the bench, Well, at least on paper, that's a downgrade offensively from Cabrera to Getz/Nix, a probable upgrade from 2 months of a hurting Crede and a long stretch of Uribe to Field/Betermit, maybe a lateral move in CF with the bat given how bad Swisher was, a defensive downgrade at 3b, and a massive defensive upgrade in CF. It's at least close to balancing out.
-
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) So in 2009, our lineup could be: C - Pierzynski 1B - Konerko 2B - Beckham 3B - Viciendo SS - Ramirez RF - Quentin/? CF - ? LF - Quentin/? Not bad. That's more like our 2010 lineup. Viciendo, even if he is signed, isn't starting off in the big leagues at age 19. He just isn't. And Dye is still in the OF for now. And Anderson is still in CF, for now. And Beckham is going to still get another year in the minors.
-
QUOTE (hogan873 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) Do you think that Wood is still viable as a starter? Do you think Contreras is?
-
QUOTE (IrishSoxFan @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) And if(once) we do sign him, do you think he'll be the starting 3B man from day one, or we'll stash him in the minors for a little seasoning? For a 19 year old, I don't care how talented he is...I would expect him to spend at least one, if not 2 full seasons in the minors. If he spends less than that there you consider yourself lucky, but the human body just doesn't develop that fast.

IMO, you don't try to outbid on closers to use them as setup men. The additional money people get for earning those "Save" totals makes it so that the only team that can really afford to buy a closer to use as a setup man is the Yankees. It's the difference between a $5 million a year pitcher and a $10 million a year pitcher.
