  1. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 07:35 PM) IF another Katrina-like storm hits, we will see a vastly different response. One thing I know from living in the US for 46 years, we rarely make the same mistake twice. (OK we reelected Clinton and Bush) but on stuff like this, we totally kick ass the second time. I think it would be advantage McCain. Well...let's change that to "We rarely make the same mistake twice in the span of a few years". We screwed up the response to Andrew pretty well back in 91 IIRC. And it was exacerbated pretty badly by the fact that FEMA was mostly staffed by political appointees without any qualifications or experience at the time. If the Levees fail again, does that count as making the same mistake 2x?
  2. Does the RNC reset their Biden Gaffe clock for "George...I mean, John McCain..."
  3. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) the bounce Obama gets from it will really show if it won over any voters. i don't like the Dems, so i am admittedly biased... but i think the convention has been pretty lame. i don't even think Obama will get a bounce from it. Seriously...90% of this stuff doesn't matter. The only thing that really matters is the hour at Invesco tomorrow night. This is all just at the margins. You could have the crappiest convention ever and have a hell of a final speech and that'd be your bump.
  4. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 06:06 PM) according to these people I met down the street "Homo sex is a threat to national security" they were so cool and smart We get a great group of those marching with signs right before and after the Rose Parade every year.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) 2 questions for you 1. Are you saying the 2008 Bobby Jenks is the same as the Jenks with the Angels? Because they are two very different players. This Bobby is a pitcher who already has TAKEN 4-5 mph of his fastball, and has added 3 others to his arsenal. 2. True or False: Pitching on regular rest in the rotation is better for the arm than pitching out of the pen irregularly. No, I'm not saying the Bobby Jenks now is the same one as with the Angels...but I am saying that Bobby's history was that he was not in good form to be a starter. And secondly...the answer is "It depends on the pitcher". John Smoltz for example always had doctors suggesting he flip back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen because of how the recovery from his surgery was going.
  6. Losing 1 game to give Danks an extra week off > losing Danks to injury or losing more games because JD's arm is wearing down.
  7. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 06:04 PM) LMAO!!! That takes the cake. And on the other hand...if it does head towards New Orleans...I could see Bush on TV...having a cake.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 04:50 PM) Because SP's are more valuable than closers. Bobby was a starter his whole career until he came here, he could move back to that role, especially now that his command has improved and he's become a pitcher instead of a thrower. Bobby as a starter was a bad idea when the Angels did it and they'd have to be idiots not to have realized it. The moment he came up everyone who watched the games could see it...he loses about 4-5 mph off his fastball after an inning or two. His arm isn't built to do long duration, it's holding up well in short bursts, and with him already having a screw in his arm there's no way anyone should ever, ever think of moving him to starting.
  9. QUOTE (Nokona @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) Read the FEMA director stated that levees are up to withstand a 30 year storm. It's been three years and this is all they've done? Basically they did what they could with the money they had. They rebuilt the sections that failed and installed some new pumps. The problem is...the rest of the levee system that didn't fail...is pretty much the same design as the sections that failed. If the newer pumps and couple of additional walls don't hold back enough, or if there's damage that wasn't detected or fully repaired from the last storm, then it's just going to go again. It would be especially bad if the storm was stronger than Katrina was, which by the time it really hit the city it was somewhere around a weak cat 2. We've probably lost more wetlands since 05 so that will strengthen the storm surge at a constant storm power...but it's entirely possible that a storm could hit the city with a lot more power than Katrina did. It was just starting one of those eyewall reformation cycles as it hit land, and that causes some amount of weakening before a burst of strengthening.
  10. QUOTE (SoxFanForever @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) Agreed. I wouldn't be upset if he was skipped a start some point in the near future to rest his arm. Maybe give Broadway another start. Probably ought to wait until after the 1st where we can call up an extra reliever or two, even if they're bad, just so that we don't have to use someone useful to eat innings if they fall apart. But we really need to think about that.
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 03:55 PM) "Chocolate New Orleans" is on CNN right now. He's really really worried about Gustav. He ought to be. It's his 2nd chance at getting it right too.
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) Biden Unleashed: Attack Dog To Be Let Loose Tonight Somehow I still don't think he'll be anywhere near able to give us the full Zell.
  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) I say this not as an Obama supporter, there is NO way the GOP gets these numbers. With the speakers they have lined up on the first 2 nights (Cheney, Bush, 9iu11ani)...would they really want them? They want big numbers for McCain's speech, but I think they'd rather keep the first couple days to fire up the Fox News viewers.
  14. Just forgetting about the GOP convention timing aspect of this...what happens to this country if the levee system fails again? It's a totally reasonable thing to expect will happen if the city takes at least another glancing blow with a cat 2-cat 3 storm.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Why on earth would that matter? I think once you're an incumbent you receive some sort of award from Zeus that allows you to use them. My evidence? Poseidon is clearly very angry about something Bush did.
  16. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) Balta, difference is, incumbent, vs. not. But I'm sure that doesn't matter, so nevermind. So Greek columns are ok for an incumbent but not a nominee? Can you explain how that works? I could understand like the Presidential seal and such, but really why is it that certain aesthetics are only allowed once you're in office?
  17. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:44 AM) http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/20...n-jabs-oba.html "When Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., moves the Democratic National Convention from the Pepsi Center to Invesco Field in Denver on Thursday, the freshman senator is planning to speak from a columned stage resembling an ancient Greek temple. The national anthem will even have a touch of celebrity: Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winning actress and former "American Idol" castoff, will perform the honors at the onset of the evening." I already thought that him doing his speech in a different venue than every other democrat at the convention had a nice little touch of arrogance to it, but this is too much. Who does he think he is, Zeus? I swear, sometimes I wonder if Obama is just completely unaware of his weaknesses, or just ignores them. And neither is a good thing. Link.
  18. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) A very ballsy, yet stupid move. The logic IMO is pretty simple. The Chargers really have a 1-2 year window to try to win a super bowl before guys like Merriman and Rivers and LT either hit free agency or have some major contract demands after those big drafts they had. After that, their window is probably going to shut because of salary issues.
  19. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 12:52 PM) Yea but at some point you'll need public support in order to move legislation. If you dont win the popular vote you wont have a very good approval rating at the onset of your presidency you wont be able to push your policies quickly enough. The only real out is crossing your fingers for a 9/11 or something to rally everyone behind you. Counterpoint though...Bush got through 2 of his biggest domestic policy achievements before 9/11 even happened...the initial tax cut package and no child left behind were both through Congress before 9/11, Bush was already (according to Qwest) asking people for warrantless wiretapping before 9/11, and IIRC Bush was already placing the government restrictions on stem cell research before 9/11.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 05:21 AM) Interesting that there is no Danks. Still plausible that they could send a guy like him to one of the other leagues out there for true winterball
  21. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:03 AM) He wasn't brought over to lead off for this team. He was brought over to bat number 2. He was put into the lead off spot out of necessity and it's worked halfway decently. His bat isn't the thing that's bothered me. He's put up numbers right in line with his career numbers. It's his defense that's annoyed me.
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 09:25 AM) Maybe my example was poor, maybe it wasn't, but my point remains that if a Republican senator had done and said the equivalent of what Liebermann has, their reaction would be the same. Understandably and predictably so. Not an exact parallel, but I've found it quite interesting how little coverage there has been of the Republican Congressman the Dems had speaking on Monday who endorsed Obama.
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 08:00 PM) Yeah, she was funny-looking when she was younger but now she's pretty sexy. Senator John McCain, June, 1998.
  24. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 07:31 PM) So... We could get 1 pick for OC, 1 for Joe, 1 for Griffey, and the 1st and 2nd rounder we will already have? Uribe has a shot at being a type B also.
