  1. QUOTE (quickman @ May 21, 2008 -> 04:57 PM) guys I am way late to the game on this, and I do not see any thing on whitesox .com, or the newspapers on the latest. Can someone please recap a bit more. In a while, we're working some things out. In the meantime, I think this trib post offers up a summary of what we're truly sure of:
  2. QUOTE (rangercal @ May 21, 2008 -> 03:00 PM) I'd just rather trade the guys who are close or at their ceilings in terms of talent. I don't think trading Noch or Kirk will bite us in the ass. I am very worried to trade someone Like Tyrus or even Noah for that matter. It pains me to watch Chris Paul turn Tyson into a legit double-double , 25 year old, 7-footer. It is not like we would shedding any major salary with the young guys either. If the right deal comes along, sure. But stay the hell away from PJ Brown! I would just be so excited to see a lineup of Rose, Tyrus, Noah, Deng, and player X develop over the next few years. Thabo and Gordon would both be excellent choices as player X.
  3. QUOTE (rangercal @ May 21, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) I just don't think you would get fair value for Deng or Tyrus right now. I don't want the Bulls to sell low when they are technically in the drivers seat. I have more faith that Tyrus and/or Deng and Rose could perform at ahiger lever together then what Kirk and Beasley could do. I just don't think Kirk is the PG that makes other people around him better. I'm not saying he is a bad player, he just can't do with Chandler what CP3 can( I think Rose is the type of player who can.) . I'm hoping the Bulls take the chance that Rose can improve the games of all our 4's and 5's. Like it or not, I'm not sure the Bulls can get fair value for any of their players after the debacle of a season they've had. But to my eyes, I don't see how they can avoid trying to make a 3 for 1 swap to try to go after someone and clear out their roster. Pre-#1 pick, I count 9 different guys who you could easily justify giving 30+ minutes a game to, based on contracts, draft status, and performance. Deng, Noc, Tyrus, Gooden, Noah, Hinrich, Hughes, Gordon, Sefalosha. And then throw in Aaron Gray who's a solid 10 minutes a game or so backup C already. And then there's still that Curry kid hanging around. IF the Bulls were drafting in the 9 slot, then they could maybe get around having to make a trade. You pick Kevin Love or DJ Augustin, and they can play 10-20 minutes a game and people won't be too pissed because they'd have to earn their way in to the rotation. But you don't play a #1 pick for 15 minutes a game unless you're just asking to be fired along with everyone you've ever worked with. There just aren't enough minutes if they don't make a move. One way to do it is to target a PG by clearing out space in the front court for Beasley. I'm not a big fan of this option because I'd love to see the Rose, Tyrus, Noah, Deng, Thabo/Gordon lineup. But probably more so, I'm not a fan of that option because it still leaves us with the 3 SG logjam and forces us to make another trade.
  4. QUOTE (Brian @ May 21, 2008 -> 02:37 PM) Doug Gottlieb on ESPN said the Bulls should take Rose, which I agree with, but made a point that Rose won back to back state titles in Illinois with sub par talent around him. Utterly ridiculous comments. Flowers, Orange, Johnson, these guys were good high school players surrounding Derrick Rose. They're seriously discussing whether or not a guy will develop in to a great pro player based on the talent that was around him in high school?
  5. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ May 21, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) I have no idea at all if this is realistic, but just suppose the Bulls were able to trade for another good, young pg. To make it concrete, say there's an opportunity to trade for Calderon. For those who prefer Rose, would you switch if the alternative was Calderon + Beasley, or would you stick with Rose? Honest question, I'm not trying to lead, and I don't know which way I'd go. I'm just curious what the reactions will be. An ideal and logical way for Beasley to make sense for the Bulls is if they could get another young PG by moving either Deng or Tyrus. Coming in to this draft, the one thing I wanted was a point guard, so I was hoping one of them would drop or they'd take Augustin. Now that we're in slightly better shape, we still need to come out of this with an upgrade at PG.
  6. QUOTE (daa84 @ May 21, 2008 -> 06:43 AM) I think people fail to realize how absurdly ridiculous it is to average 26.5 points again (especially when everyone on the other team knows the ball is going to you) and 12.4 rebounds (lead the NCAA!) in the college game...those numbers are plain stupid with rose he only went over 10 assists twice all year, and to be honest for the most part memphis played a weak schedule The other side of those numbers though is that Beasley's scoring and rebounding were going to be inflated on a team like K-State, because he was the man on that team. it's not like there was another key rebounding or scoring option.
  7. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 21, 2008 -> 07:50 AM) I just got to thinking... Let's assume, for the sake of argument, McCain loses to Obama. I think the 2012 Republican Primaries might be VERY similar to the democrats this year. "Elite" Romney vs "BlueCollar" Huckabee. I think it might be epic. Iraq me candidate Petraeus.
  8. QUOTE (Texsox @ May 21, 2008 -> 08:28 AM) Probably more so than any election in the past 40 years, the VP picks will be crucial. The Dem candidate will need balance. (i.e. 60ish white guy) and McCain has to run with a "co-President" type. A poor choice here will doom their campaign, even worse than Bush the elder keeping DQ. I find it quite interesting that your instinct was to care more about the race and age of an Obama VP choice than to care about the policies they advocate or their leadership skills or anything else.

    Oil Issue

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 21, 2008 -> 07:55 AM) Me personally, I get 25 mpg, whatever car I buy next is going to be over 30 if I can help it. No public transportation goes to where I work, and I live a little too far for it to be practical for me to walk or bike to work. But if I lived within 5 miles like I used to, I'd do it. So I just have to brace myself for the body blows and live with it until I can figure out a better way. On your next vehicle...please consider waiting a couple years and then look in to the plug-in hybrids when they're available. Most people go less than 40 miles per day while driving. If you can run a car on a battery for the first 40 miles, which is I believe the goal on the Chevy volt, then you can charge the vehicle at night and drive it during the day without using up any oil. For longer trips you still have the hybrid engine to run things. In terms of total energy, this nation consumes 7 times or so as much energy for movement as it does for electricity generation because it's vastly more efficient to generate electricity in large plants than it is to generate energy in small internal combustion engines, so even if you're using energy from coal plants (hopefully eventually solar and wind take over that role), a workable plug-in hybrid system fueling this country would drive oil demand through the floor and cut our energy needs by a factor of several. You want to solve this energy crisis thing? There's the biggest part of your solution.

  11. Palmeiro won a gold glove at 1b and you've got him @ DH and McGwire @ 1b? Gagne closes and that shouldn't even be close. Could really use a CF upgrade.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 21, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) I have to disagree with this. People seem to assume that Ozuna is bad at 3rd because he's bad in the OF and at SS. Except, its just not the case. Ozuna is a competent defensive 3B. Not a starter, but an average defender over there. We saw it in 2005, and we've seen it a few times since. Backup at 3B is, to me, one of the least concerns in terms of backups - Ozuna in the short term and Fields in the long term is a decent stack. Of more concern is the lack of lefty bats on the bench, and Hall's shoulder. If Hall starts to have problems again, with Lucy injured, the catching situation is very thin. Philips would have to be the guy. You're missing the point of my post...the suggestion given was that maybe we ought to keep Alexei up when Richar returns since he's now hitting, and that the odd man out would be Ozuna. That's why I started looking for 3b backups...if you drop Ozuna, you don't have one.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 20, 2008 -> 07:24 PM) But don't you think that Obama's campaign would have tried running up the vote counts in largely populated regions if the popular vote was the measurement for getting nominated? They would have spent 99% of their time in large urban cities for the duration of the campaign. I highly doubt he would have visited Idaho, South Dakota, or Mississippi. So to me the popular vote is a flawed measurement. EDIT: And he would have focused his advertising in the urban cities as well. Let's put it this way. If Hillary Clinton had an honest win in the popular vote tally, while Obama had a delegate win, I think it's entirely possible that she has reason to take the fight to the convention and the superdelegates and pledged delegates from each district would have reason to make up their minds. If Obama had a narrow popular vote lead but a delegate loss, then I think that based on Hillary's front runner status coming in and her control of so much of the party mechanisms, she winds up with a win in that case solidly. The only way for Obama to win was to do both the popular vote and the delegate win. Which he's done. Whether or not the advertising and strategy was focused in that direction, you can always make an argument that the popular vote at least counts for something, if not everything.
  14. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 20, 2008 -> 08:08 PM) I don't understand the popular vote argument. If that was the measure that was used for selecting the nominee wouldn't the candidates spend all their time in California, New York, Illinois, etc and never even visit some of the less populated states? Delegates was the decided measurement for selecting the nominee and that's how the candidates strategized their campaigns. You can't change the metric in the middle of the campaign. The popular vote is a fair moral argument, it's a reasonable thing to look at in an election. It's one of the reasons so many of us are still pissed about the Gore election. If you could honestly look at this situation and say that yes, Obama had won more delegates, but Hillary had a genuine lead in the popular vote, it'd be reason to consider her claim, especially for the Superdelegates. On the other hand though, the reason it keeps being pushed in this race is that it's the only way that Clinton can spin anything as a win for her. She's not going to win the delegate counts, Obama's going to get to the winning delegate margin soon, but she can push the popular vote thing because it minimizes the magnitude of several of his wins in caucus states and takes full advantage of him not being on the ballot at all in Michigan. If Hillary had a valid popular vote claim, then people would be listening. But you can't just assume that Obama got no votes in Michigan, and only a handful in Iowa and similar caucus states and expect a moral argument to work.l
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 20, 2008 -> 06:47 PM) D'Antoni has to be kicking himself in the ass right now. He could've ended up walking into a cake job. His money will keep him happy
  16. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 20, 2008 -> 06:12 PM) the #1 pick is kind of a big deal. DOesnt this warrant it's own thread? It already has its own message board!
  17. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 20, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) Then he'd say, "I wish I could play defense and had a work ethic like him, or even shared his passion." As if on cue.
  18. QUOTE (daa84 @ May 20, 2008 -> 05:45 PM) no matter what...i think joakim noah is gonna benefit greatly from this draft, i really think he could grow well with either guy playing a sidekick type rebounder/cleanup guy I'm sure I'll get bashed for saying so, but so would Tyrus, either if he's traded and therefore gets playing time with someone else or if he gets to play with Rose. I said over @ the Bulls board that whoever our new coach winds up being should stick Rose and Tyrus in a locked room with video of Paul and Chandler on Alley-oops, and they shouldn't unlock the door until they hear Tyrus say "Wait a second, I can jump higher than that guy."
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ May 20, 2008 -> 06:38 PM) No numbers from Oregon yet? Polls there don't close until 8 pm PST and 11 pm EST.
  20. Obama took in $31.2 million in April. McCain took in $18 million. Clinton's numbers not in yet.
  21. The folks here have put up a somewhat high level but hopefully also understandable summary of the geology involved in this earthquake. Link.
