Even if I give them credit for those guys, as generous as I can be, the best starting pitcher they have developed since 2012 is a pitcher that they spent a #3 overall draft pick to get who has put up 5.7 fWAR in 4 seasons total. They MUST do better than this. It's not like they haven't drafted pitchers in 6 years, it's not like they haven't put assets into that position, they just haven't done anything.

99, 89, 86, 84, 95, 100. That's >10 more losses than any other team in baseball over that 6 year stretch.
-
Colome was not a signing, they traded away Narvaez for him.
-
"We ran this player through every system we have and decided on a hard cap for his valuation based on all the information we could gather" would be a much more interesting and effective statement than the stuff they've been shoveling even if it was a lie.
-
WTF? They didn't want to do an opt out because they were nervous he wouldn't try hard in years 6, 7, and 8 and that's the logic?
-
None of them, not a single one, had the advantage of the head start created by the Sale, Eaton, and Quintana deals, not to mention the multiple years of top 15 to top 3 draft picks before it even started.
-
FWIW, anyone who went to 0 last year would go to the same number and would vote "no".

Their information is no better than the source of that information. The source of that information, ultimately, was the people in a franchise who don't understand baseball free agency or player values. The same people who were shocked yesterday. So they absolutely knew things - they knew the same stuff that Rick Hahn was selling, they just believed it and pushed it.
-
And it's the General Manager's job to work with ownership on that one. Ownership never wants to spend. Rick Hahn's job is to make ownership understand why this is the right move even if it's money they don't want to spend. One example of that behavior - AJ Preller. Because it's literally exactly what he did. To the letter. A better general manager did not let his owner tell him no to a player he needed, that's why he's a better general manager.

Frankly, he did a good job in holding guys and blinking when necessary. He could have held Quintana longer and watched his value drop. He could have held Eaton and watched him get hurt in week 1. He could have moved Quintana earlier and gotten less than the return that was brought in. I do not believe he could have gotten more value, on paper, out of any of those deals. You want to fault him on the choices of players coming back and how poorly they may have scouted some of them, that's a different matter now. Prior to this week I'd have gone to a C, because they have talent, but half of it got hurt last year and everyone else who didn't come from the Cubs seemed to have worrisome years. That's recoverable but trending downwards rapidly from a year before. Had he signed one of the guys they should have signed with the payroll space they created that would have bumped them back up to a B. As of right now, they're a D - prospects are struggling and injured, opportunity to spend FA funds is blown, all they have left is that their prospects are talented and could rebound.

No one should be there.

He was one of those sources. At the least he was one of the decent ones, who didn't arrogantly rip into people for doubting the org, but he pushed the line that the White Sox would get Machado done just like all the others. He now feels it appropriate to engage in name calling and to quote me directly when in the 2 days since this went down not once did I tag him or call him out directly. In, what I add, is the first post I've seen from him since everything he said about the Machado deal was proven false.

Really, you want to come back with braggadocio and name calling today?

Updated with $/WAR: Every Hahn MLB Free Agent Signing since 2012/2013

Because why not, it's not like we're going to use the money elsewhere, we may as well blow it and let some of the guys who are trapped here walk. -
and that should tell you something about this failure.

On top of that...all the cards fell correctly. The Red Sox are still paying for Sandoval. The Yankees are still paying for Ellsbury. The luxury tax is hitting teams. The Dodgers have a 3b and a SS and don't want to shift people out of positions to this extent. The teams that could have blown this out of the water were out.
-
Had they put 10/$350 on the table they'd have a shot with him. They'd probably be signing him.
-
He went to the f***ing San Diego Padres. They're like 29th out of 30 teams in wins over the past 6 seasons. This isn't the NBA where teams are maneuvering around Larry Bird rights and hitting max contracts so they give up and join together. We literally tried making the setup for him attractive with all his friends around this year and lost to the bloody San Diego Padres because we didn't want to pay him fair market value. Players in MLB want to come where they are fairly paid. Full stop.

RON IN 2019: Thinking of cheering for the Cubs next year

I think their attendance will be substantially worse than last season going forward. They're going to lose another 5-10% this year and yesterday was probably the least fun day to be a White Sox season ticket rep since whenever the last time was that they laid off season ticket reps, so 2020 will be even worse. Even if they're moving in the right direction in 2020, it feels broken right now. The park will not be packed, and they will not be "more aggressive signing free agents" they'll do the same crap as this year.
-
1. Because they've said they won't and even if they hadn't said that they have no credibility so no one believes they will be. They're clowns. 2. Hahahaha free parking? That's the money that goes directly into ownership's pockets. Their ownership of the parking lots is the ultimate piece of their sweetheart deal from the state. They will give away free game tickets before they give away free parking.

The second reply is pretty good...but there's something different this time. In 2014 I hated what they were doing and canceled the Extra Innings package, downsized to MLB.tv. After 2016 I canceled MLB.TV. I still went to a few road games each of those years, and tuned in when they were on TV, and still came here. This year? Once the anger dies down I don't know what's going to motivate me to be here, and absolutely will not be going to any MLB games this year. Somehow the fact that this will be the first year I'm not wearing White Sox gear on opening day since I was probably <10 years old...that means something to me. There's no lesser amount of caring I can do.
-
The normal part of me would otherwise have been kinda curious whether Moncada is still taking all his reps at 3b, but honestly, I don't care. I don't even want to know.
-
I think you're seriously underestimating what they just did. And you can fire my post count back at me if you want, I won't even tune in during free preview week this year.
-
Root for the Brewers this year it'll be more fun. I'd root for the Astros but can't due to their choice of closers to acquire last year.
