Official Soxtalk 2006 World Cup Thread

So first round over. Bring on Equadore. Owen looks as if he's out for the duration so you can all look out for more tight games with us flooding the midfield At least Gerald, Cole and Lampard can now play in their prefered positions. -

My Friends, I give you… THE DUMBEST MAN ON EARTH! This picture is real - not doctored in anyway - and was taken last week by lorry driver friend near the Ice Skating rink at Gillingham. The car is still running, as can be witnessed by the exhaust. A woman is either asleep or has passed out in the front passenger seat. The bloke who was driving had apparently gone off to call his cousin who had a dropside Transit and was tarmacing drives in the area. Witnesses said their physical state was OTHER than normal. The driver finally came back after the police were called, and was found crouched behind the rear of the car, attempting to cut the rope around the load! Luckily, the police stopped him and had the load removed. The materials were loaded at B&Q around the corner. The store manager said they made the customer sign a disclaimer before they would load the stuff. While the plywood and 4X2s are fairly obvious, what you can’t see is the back seat, which contains -- are you ready for this? -- 10 bags of concrete @ 40kg each. They estimated the load weight at 1.5 tons and that’s without all the cheap gold worn by the driver and passenger! Both back tires exploded, the wheels bent and the back shocks were driven through the floor. The car was headed for Chatham (the blinging wheels give it away really), where the couple presumably planned to build a new house in which to smoke their crack.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:56 PM) This is very true, but England is far from peaking. They have played poorly. Er exactly. We have yet to peak. As for poorly, we've played two games, won them both, not conceeded a goal and have three in the for column. I hate to think what youd say if we'd drawn one. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:15 PM) You might be regretting that later on. Oh contraire, if you know your history of past world cups, the team that wins is generally amongst the ones that start slowly. Peeking too early is a no no. Watch how far Spain get. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 04:45 PM) Ecuador has been nothing short of spectacular in this World Cup. Those guys are for real. I'm hoping T&T gets an upset here against England. 6pts and into the next round without firing on all cylinders. Job done. I need say no more. -

QUOTE(illinilaw08 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 09:55 PM) Yeah, Poland was playing for a draw after the red card, really unfortunate that they had to take the loss there considering just how well Bourac played. That being said, with the Poles and the US all but eliminated I need a new side to root for, any ideas? -

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 07:42 AM) England has always been overhyped in my mind. Maybe, that's my issue with them. That and I just don't like the English (with an English grandmother no less). -
Damn it, I'm in the middle of using that pic for a wallpaper too.

QUOTE(knightni @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 12:20 AM) If you could just get Scotland to join England's team, you might never lose. Don't be daft. The reason there is no UK team is that it would be made up entirely of English players. The only non English British player that would have made it into England's team over the last few years is Ryan Giggs in his prime. He did play for England as a kid but was convinced to play for Wales as a senior, don't ask me how that happened, I was never consulted. -

Croatia made Brazil look ordinary. They are beatable. Italy are a shadow of their former self and Germany have a few old horses mixed in with some inexperienced youth, give them a few more years and they may be contenders. USA are just, well, USA. This is not your national sport, you don't have the quality in depth to compete at this level.....yet. Holland will do OK if they don't shoot themselves in the foot and Australia are flattering to deceive. Argentina will probably win if they catch Brazil playing the way they did today. Now then England, well we ALLWAYS get of to a slow start and then improve and improve we will. I don't know where this image of chokers has come from, we've managed a couple of Quarter finals and a fourth place losing to Brazil, Argentina and Germany in recent tournaments. Admittedly we have gone out a number of times via penalty shoot outs, but these are a lottery ( and we did win the whole damn thing once ). England has the best team in depth, unlike most teams that have some fantastic individual stars we have the best midfield in the tournament with Gerard, Beckham, Cole and Lampard. Our defence is strong, the goalie is class and if Rooney can come back in the later stages we'll have a forward line that will frighten any defence. Our only downside is our s***ty negative minded no bollocks, taught in Italy, Swedish - I won't show any soul - characterless manager. As I've said before, if the team can ignore him long enough and play their natural game.........we can win this. Or Argentina will. Or I could be completely wrong and be talking a whole lot of clap trap. -

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 05:01 PM) They're doing the same things in China, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, and Serbia. Bash them too. Not here. During half time the BBC will cover the previous 45 mins and highlights of any other game played that day. There will probably be 30 seconds or so on the latest injury scare, or interview with a player, but that's about it. I can never get over how USA centric American sports coverage is whenever I'm over there during the Olympics, World Athletics Champs etc. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 04:59 PM) England was very unimpressive and got lucky on the own goal. Their defense looked ok though. Crouch is so damn scrawny btw. Jeez, eat once in a while. Sweden/T&T start now. Can't wait to see Larsson/Ibrahimovic work together. Just got back home tonight. That free kick was undefendable, Beckham at his best. If we can just ignore our managers Italian style of sitting on a one nil lead we can walk this group, Sweden have NOTHING to be scared of. QUOTE(knightni @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 05:32 PM) I could see the host team pulling a France and winning it all. Not unless they learn to defend, Klinsman is still building his team. They will be top class in Euro 2008. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 05:21 AM) Who will be the starting keeper for Team USA? Please please can you guys get the termination right? He is not the "starting" goal keeper, just the keeper. The fact he is on the pitch means that he is starting, just like the other ten players. It's rather like me calling Contreras a thrower for the White Sox ( or even worse, a bowler). QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 04:35 AM) You guys are very lucky with the time zone. Unfortunately for me, most of the games are on at about 2a.m See how I feel every damn night QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 05:22 PM) Semi's Holland over Argentina Spain over Brazil Championship Spain over Holland You are dreaming........right? -

I'm away camping this week end so will have to find a pub showing the game. I doubt it'll be too hard to find one. -
QUOTE(Rooftop Shots @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 11:23 PM) It's something that I just found on the net, and saved it im my file. I recently put it in Image Shack. But as previously stated, my original Sig Pic of The Old Comiskey was way too big for Soxtalks guidelines. I forgot who did it and how, but someone previously from Soxtalk cropped it down for me. Then for whatever reason, after having up on my postings for well over a year, it was gone. Would you like me to e-mail you the pic? PM the pic to me and I'll sort it. I'll be away until Sunday night so won't be able to get to it until then though.

Hi fellas. Just got in, is there any chance we can turn this game around?

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 02:45 PM) For crying out loud the Sox playing like s*** has nothing to do with any jinx. The team isn't very good right now, nor is the management of the team. Unfortunatly we do not have a colour for sarcastic. Superstition has it's place, don't walk under a ladder (someone might drop something on you), don't pass anyone on the stairs (could also lead to an accident). But when it comes to affecting how a team plays, I have no time for it, it's just like throwing salt over your shoulder when you spill some. You just end up with more spilt salt. How many of you are still wearing your lucky shirts? We've lost 4 games in a row, we will come out of this "mini" funk soon.
