I just dont see Palin being the wedge-issue or turnout machine that gay marriage was. Especially against a competent opponent like Obama as opposed to a dud like Kerry.

I'm a far left Socialist, but not a Communist. A lot of people don't know the difference between those two and it makes arguments very difficult. Why am I a Socialist? Well uhh... because it works? For real, I'd be glad to explain it if anybody cares.

This is more than just Palin, although I'm sure she was the tipping point. This whole effort to get Hillary supporters has turned out to be a waste of time, because there aren't many of them who haven't made up their minds already on what they're going to do. It's entirely possible that many of the women who switched to McCain now feel so pandered to and manipulated have just decided to sit the election out. That movement is an underrated aspect of the recent seperation in the polls, women aren't a monolithic voting block and apparently are resentful of those who treat them like one. What Palin has done is energized the Republican base into a bit of frenzy. But all that does is get people who were going to vote for McCain anyways want to vote for him more, which really isn't the point of a campaign when it's all said and done.

I think it's funny that people speak in the future tense of Hispanics abondoning the Republican party. Look at polling number in New Mexico, Nevada and even Texas... this is a problem happening right now for the GOP that isn't being addressed enough.

More or less. Of course it depends on how you use them. If you're like Nixon or LBJ and just let them tear each other apart and get some sick sociopathic pleasure out of it then they really dont mean that much. But a Bill Clinton, JFK or (occasionally) Ronald Reagan makes very good use of their staff.

Yea but at some point you'll need public support in order to move legislation. If you dont win the popular vote you wont have a very good approval rating at the onset of your presidency you wont be able to push your policies quickly enough. The only real out is crossing your fingers for a 9/11 or something to rally everyone behind you.
