  1. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 09:17 AM) In the words of KW, "1917". Jenks may be a lights out closer for yrs to come. But not this yr. If he could be part of a deal that nets Wagner, I could live with that. For a middle of the road guy like Baez, certainly not One other thing--Jenks was a waiver wire pickup. How often could a waiver wire guy be used to pick up an all star closer? Not very often. Yeah, but how often could a waiver wire guy BECOME an All-Star closer? Not declaring that he will be, but signs are looking positive right now.
  2. Sorry, I should have welcomed you as well. Welcome to SoxTalk!!
  3. Thread to me moved . . . ? go to inside beat for all of this discussion.
  4. And the dominoes start to fall. Nothing major yet unless that Soriano deal comes through. Haven't heard about it yet though. KW is laying in the weeds.
  5. QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) what the sox need is a reliever/spot starter and a good lefty or righty bat i honestly think we will only come out with a pitcher at the least I need my life back. Pathetic I know. This s*** is getting tiring. I wish I could fast-forward 72 hours and just concentrate on our team PLAYING baseball.
  6. QUOTE(SpringfieldFan @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 05:16 PM) If I were KW, I guess I could always make an offer. I would have to require that Boston pick up 30% of his contract, that we give up no more than two full time starters and two top level propsects, and that Manny sign a clause that he must wear a uniform that fits him. SFF Or at least get his pants hemmed. Yes, gay horn please. . .
  7. Actually, it seems like Farmer is just Nostradamus posing as a radio announcer. He has a habit of making those calls.
  8. Agreed. Hopefully he can get his stuff back in AAA and contribute to a team again.
  9. QUOTE(palesox38 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) Let me rephrase that, on Pro Sports Daily, it says kenny has been calling all week, and they told him they aren't interested in trading him. They believe they are still in it. But if they are proposed the right trade, there is always room for discussion. I would never write anything off this week of the year.
  10. Rooney, Farmer give White Sox AL's top radio team By Steve Gardner, USATODAY.com Here's a closer look at each of the 14 AL broadcast teams. Audio highlights from the top five are courtesy of MLB.com. 1. Chicago White Sox (John Rooney, Ed Farmer) Rooney is as solid a play-by-play announcer as the game has to offer. He has a terrific grasp of everything that's going on and he leads Farmer expertly when it's time to explain some of the intricacies in the action or go off on a tangent. ("Contrary to popular belief Goose Goslin and Heinie Manush were not close friends," Farmer interjected during a discussion of old-timers one day.) A former major league pitcher, Farmer calls play-by-play in the middle innings — but he brings more of a fan's perspective to the mike. He and Rooney balance each other perfectly and they're there every single night. A good example of how they work so well together came May 31 when the White Sox and Angels were tied going into the bottom of the ninth. Farmer came back from commercial and urged the Sox, "Let's go win it on a (Jermaine) Dye homer" before turning things over to Rooney. Three pitches later, Rooney described that exact scenario as Dye's blast cleared the fence with his trademark, "That's a White Sox winner!" Those guys are always awesome. No offense to Hawk and DJ, I'd listen to these guys any day for a game.
  11. Wasn't that already covered in: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=37729 Same article?
  12. Still not convinced Burnett would be better than El Duque in the playoffs. JC & El Duque would not work out of the pen.
  13. Here you go: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story.../offbase/050726 great article btw.
  14. After thinking it over last night, I'm not worried. If this continues for another couple of weeks, then yes, I would think something is truly wrong with this team. But I remember earlier in the season when we were tearing things up, many of the players reminded us (and many of us said) that the team is going to go through a rough patch during the season and they are going to have to respond with authority and pull themselves out of it. I thought some of our ealier spells were those times but this may be it. There isn't a way to tell until November. But I expect this team to snap out of it. Offensive slumps are a little more excusable than defensive slumps. While at times the offense has been lacking, take a couple of those games lost by errors and we are a respectable 14-9 so far after the break. I am not big on "what ifs" but I am just using it to reason that we are going to pull out of this. We may struggle a little longer but this isn't the worst time in the world to go through this. I would much rather have it now than in September going into the playoffs.
  15. QUOTE(Ozzie Montana @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) Id only wait until the last minute to trade with them until they are totally desperate so we can steal a player from them. Otherwise I dont want to help them. I do not want these guys in the playoffs cause they got so much experience and they know how to persevere in the pressure tight situations in the playoffs. Basically i dont want to help their chances of making it in to the post season. You can call me nuts cause of the way they have played this year and their pathetic pitching somebody wouldnt mind facing them, but JMO. I want them in the playoffs about as much as you do. But losing a series after being up 3-0 is not the greatest in pressure situations. But across the board, they do have a wealth of postseason experience, good and bad.
  16. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:19 AM) Damn the man. Save the Empire. Like I said, Kenny wants to win this now. If he has a good feeling that this would push us over the edge (maybe a different phrase would be more appropriate) then he would pull it off. I would have a feeling that if Florida had any inkling that we might move Burnett to Philly they would require that Lowell be included in the deal.
  17. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:10 AM) They wouldn't have to know. If this could be done I'd much rather have Wagner than Burnett. I know this trade would be for the here and now, but would this hurt Kenny's relationship with the Florida GM? He seems to have good working relationships with most so I'm not sure if this would be something he would risk. It's a small risk for big gain IMO but I would still think its a factor.
  18. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:01 AM) Well, if history shows us anything, its that Burnett isn't really a solid, dependable pitcher. He's good, but he's kinda got the Contreras stigma of being good one start and bad the next. I mean, the guy has got a record under .500 in his career...and thats while playing on some damn good Florida teams. Can't remember who said it, but he was right: blame the situation. If Kenny can pull off a move that makes us better, then I will be the happiest guy here. Problem is, there really isn't an impact player on the market that is worth the asking price. Hell, the only two guys who are really available who I'd describe as "impact" players (Overbay and Wagner), nobody is really sure that they are available. There is no way for me to know what Kenny is thinking right now. All I know is that he's one of the most aggressive GM's in the league. He's also consistantly said over the years (and recently) that he's always looking to make this team better. If we don't land a guy at the deadline, I'm pretty sure that it won't be for a lack of trying. I agree wholeheartedly with you Kev. The dreamer side of me wants to believe that we can pull these deals off for Wagner and Overbay but the pragmatic side tells me it probably won't happen. But it certainly won't be from Kenny not trying, just the trading environment that he's working in right now. Damn the wild card.
  19. Kenny sensed the desperation in the Yankees for starting pitching and didn't hesitate to ask for exactly what he wanted. He and Cashman are on good terms probably but not that good for Kenny to give something for nothing.
  20. If thats the case, then KW needs to see if this can work out. McCarthy & Marte for Burnett, Burnett for Wagner. Surely not as simple as that but if anybody could make the deal, Kenny could get it done.
  21. Even if the protest is upheld, we have to continue to play the game from where it was left off. I just want this f***ing thing over with. Win the damn game so it doesn't matter.
  22. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 03:29 PM) We're going into the playsoffs flat because of a weak July effort vs. the Royals? No, its just the recent rash of errors (7) in the past week. Not just this series. I'm not predicting doom and gloom but I wish the defense would get their collective head screwed back on straight. I guess we've gotten spoiled by fantastic play thus far.
