  9. Sox game on fellas, in all great news on the Sox front.
  10. QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 12:04 PM) Contreras' sig is now on the bottom line, no contract distractions this year whatsoever. Very nice. They are playing it one year at a time, no need to worry about McCarthy, lots of things can happen after 2006. McCarthy is a huge part of the future, they love him, and he will pitch a lot. For all we know , Vasquez is the one dealt.
  11. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:59 AM) No, he is a god. A prodigy. Whatever you want to call him. He is beyond the total package. When you have an array of pitches like that, have control of them like he does, and have that type of composure on the mound, you are something incredibly special. Prior was throwing 120+ pitches very early on in his career. You can undoubtedly thank a lot of his injury concerns to Dusty Baker. Pedro has not been hurt for extended periods of time because he has pretty much been babied his entire career. That's what a team has to do to keep him healthy. Rowand was replaceable by someone within the organization, was making a decent amount of money, is 28 years old(29 in August), and was coming off a rather mediocre season offensively. That's why Rowand could be dealt. McCarthy is replaceable, sure, but he is cheaper than hell, he is very young, and he was coming off a season where he was friggin absolutely brilliant for stretches of time. If he can do anything near that consistently over an entire season, he is a 20 game winner. I will say that this signing confused the hell out of me initially, as I thought the plan was to just let Contreras go at the end of the season and allow his to get like a 4-year, $48 mill deal or something around that territory, and then let McCarthy slip into the rotation. Apparently, I was quite wrong. I do think what this does give the organization is some leeway to do a number of things...play out the season with the 5 starters, and then see if a situation arises where one could be traded to get McCarthy into the rotation...or if not, allow McCarthy to remain in the bullpen(though I do not see that scenario playing out whatsoever...I hope nothing pans out that way) Gonna be interesting to see Great points... but we can go back to the Rowand threads and see how many of you siad no way we trade the best defensive CF in the game! I was one of the few that said he was more than expendable at tha time, and kenny concurred in the offseason.
  12. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:58 AM) Where as McCarthy is still under our control for years still and has the ability to match the productivity of anyone in our rotation. Fufill is the key word... hope he does better. kenny gets the last word on this anyhow.
  13. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:56 AM) Then why would you be so quick to whack a lable on a 19 year old pitcher? Felix Hernandez is still a teenager and you seem ready to lable him the second comming. I didn't... i dont label guys... you do?
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) Man, you really hate McCarthy it seems. We had 4 outstanding starters, and the only reason McCarthy wasn't on the postseason roster was because Ozzie wanted Duque's experience to be on the team. You won't find many young pitchers in baseball with McCarthy's command, stuff, and poise. Personally, I'll be extremely pissed if we trade him. Not at all Fathom... the kid has enough pressure on him. Just dont like the labels guys give these kids without substantional backing. I really Like Mccarthy, seen his MLB debut at Wrigley and he was the reason I went!
  15. QUOTE(Soxpranos @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) retrack? if he has all the tools, should it matter? Lat time I checked , you play the players that give you the best chance of winning.
  16. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:51 AM) The Indians also didn't have 4 studly veteran SPs in front of him in the rotation. retrack? if he has all the tools, should it matter?
  17. QUOTE(indyman @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) Everyone is assuming all 5 starters will always be heathy. It's very unusual if 5 starters to be heathy year after year. I'd be surprised if BMac not starting sooner rather than later. Yes, anyone can get injured... great point.
  18. I recall the Indians starting J. Wright his rookie season in the post season, and they were right on doing so as we were having mccarthy watch.
  19. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) Yes, McCarthy - 1.69 ERA post AS break, Contreras - 2.96. Thats why mccarthy made post season starts? I'll take ozzies assesment of pitching thank you.
  20. QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:42 AM) His second half ERA (when he came back up from AAA after fixing his delivery IIRC) was something along the lines of 1.69. Now, without looking at the numbers, I believe that was better than what Contreras did in the second half of last year, yet everyone here seems to think Contreras is a Cy Young candidate. Dont want to start a Rowand thread like last year.. look what it got him.. a Philly uniform.. anyone can get dealt. Part of a business, you need to look at it that way. Its about winning now, not later...
  21. QUOTE(iWiN4PreP @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:41 AM) yes ba hit 2 homers of king felix Great analogy... Just like Jose Deleon turned out to better than Clemens in 86 when he handed him half his losses in face to face duels (2). 21-4 was clemens record.
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:36 AM) I'm also going to assume that Kip was not rushed out of AA ball, where he was never even able to throw a pitch in Charlotte before he hit the pros. And I highly doubt that Kip was able to match what BMac did in September of last year where he was mowing down very good teams and just making them look silly. 2 starts? come on man.. i like McCarthy also.. but beating Boston and the other quality start , doesnt make him the next Maddux. Hopefully for us he makes your prophecy come true.
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 11:36 AM) Yes, McCarthy showed last year that his stuff is good enough to dominate in the majors. Also, he has a much better frame for MLB success than Gio, who has yet to prove he can stay healthy. Funny how Pedro Martinez was labeled the same way.. Pretty damn good pitcher, yea hes hurt.. but look at Prior who has a better build than Mccarthy.. injury can happen to anyone.
