QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 07:15 PM) I didn't take issue with the spelling of a word but Ozzie's improper use of a word, so I don't understand the point you're making. Oh, there was no need for me to make one. I think you did it perfectly.

QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 07:21 PM) Well that's a separate issue. I was simply debunking your immensely erroneous, inaccurate, feebleminded, poor analogy. The analogy fits just fine. Those that go there have a choice. They don't seem to have an issue buying beer from a baseball fan that knows more about the Sox than half the nit wits on this site and can carry on an intelligent conversation. Because you choose not to support him with a inept reason speaks volumes. Next time you're at the cell think before you buy a beer, soda, hot dog, etc.... most of the vendors are Cub fans and you are supporting them with every sip and bite. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 07:39 PM) Don't you think that is why I stated, italicized, and put in bold, the following statement?: Don't quite understand what that has to do with my question.... QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 08:25 PM) I would hope not, but I guess we just aren't true fans Steff Apparently not. I guess next time I am in the Wrigley area I shouldn't buy any beer.. or when I go to Baltimore, or NY, or Detroit, etc... Crazy.

QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 06:59 PM) I'm assuming Ozzie was interviewed and he gave that quote verbally. Yea... Probably spelled it out for the reporter though.

QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 06:49 PM) The difference between any other Cub fan-owned establishment and Jimbos is that Jimbos is a Bridgeport bar operating under false allegiance by targeting the White Sox organization and fans. Well then, I have to say it's mighty big of the Sox employees - office and players - who are able to look past that 2 year old mentality.

QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 06:43 PM) Agreed, and I'm usually lenient to non-native English speakers when it comes to grammar and accent. It's just a common mistake that many native English speakers believe is proper usage, and I took the opportunity to teach someone. So Ozzie wrote out this quote....

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 05:34 PM) To some (like Hangar,) yes. I added "just sayin'" for a reason. So why exactly was Woo-Woo let into the bar over real Sox fans during the World Series? Just askin' He was there before they met the capasity? I have no idea. But if someone is going to start making an effort to not shop at or eat at establishments that are run by Cub fans, they're gonna be staying home a lot in this town. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) 4 times to be exact. That is still a lot of money when they do. I'm just sayin'. I have never been there and I never felt the need to go, but I wouldn't want a Cub fan making money off of me if I knew and had the choice. Do people really ask before they use a service and walk away from that service if the person providing it states they are a Cub fan? Or a Gb fan if you are a Bears fan? Or a Redwings fan if you are a Hawks fan...??

You have time to get to know your way around or do you start working again soon? How's the weather?
-
QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 01:40 PM) Then go run off and make a Cubs bar. Great tip, mensa.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 09:49 AM) From a business/personal perspective no you hate to see a guy get shut down. As for a cub fan cleaning up if the Sox make the playoffs.... He's been there 23 years... how many times have we made the playoffs in those 23 years? He's far from coming close to breaking even. I don't mind that he's a Cub fan. At least he is a real fan of the game and can carry on an intelligent conversation. He's also critical without bias.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 11:09 PM) No mention of the owner being a Cub fan yet? Just sayin' Does it really matter?

QUOTE(Molto @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 06:14 PM) I'm not even so sure, if Jimbo's were to close, a new bar would even go up. I believe the area around Jimbo's is considered a dry zone, and Jimbo's was grandfathered in, so I believe any new business there can't be a bar. Then again, clout can do some crazy stuff, but I think many of the people on that block aren't too fond of a bar there anyway, so that may just become what many lots are becoming, a house or condo. I know it's pretty hard to start a bar in the area though, as residents usually vote against it. from what I can tell, living pretty close by, it's typical bar business aside Sox games. probably just a group of regulars, and then when the Sox are in town, bam, packed. Apparently, when Ray gets out of rehab, his plan is to reopen. I'm sure you being so close will hear about this soon enough, but the neighbors are going to do all they can to dry it up. He's (Ray) is not well liked so his odds of success are slim to none and I would not be shocked to see "something" not so nice happen to the property... As for what really happened, it would be different if they were fighting or if more money was being asked for. Then at least there would be some negotiating possibilities. Ray just wants it and he's decided now is the time. Regardless, it takes time to boot someone out of a rental so I'm not too worried about not being able to drink at Jimbo's in October.

QUOTE(chiguy79 @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 10:37 AM) The real pay-off would have been to sign a new lease and then sell a cash-cow of a bar, now that isn't an option. That being said the Landlord can do what he wants, Jimbo should have tried for an extension years ago, and will obviously have to pay much higher rent if he wanted to stay anyways. If the lease only stated 30-day notice than the official 30 day notice was sent. Also, if Jimbo's knew there was risk of not extending the lease they should have been looking into new space over a year ago and they wouldn't be in the situation they are in now. What situation is that?

QUOTE(sti3 @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 09:16 AM) Good to hear but WTF took them so long? I've watched the once (somewhat) bustling commercial strip of Halsted St. shrivel up while USCF turned into a suburban-style tailgater's paradise. Truly depressing. The mayor and the whole rest of the city gets the Urbanism thing, why does Daley's team and 'hood not? The Sox don't have anything to do with this. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 09:39 AM) I saw this on the news this morning and was shocked. Jimbo's is a dump, but it's our dump. That said, let me save all the do-gooders here some time: forget it. Jimbo's is history. The landlord is totally connected (city-wise) and there is absolutely no way Jimbo's is going to survive. This reminds me of what happened to CBGBs in New York--unfortunately, sentimentality is trumped by reality. Get into Jimbo's this month, enjoy it, and say goodbye. It's a goner. Maybe they'll open a new place, maybe not. But what a focking shame that there will no longer be a Sox bar just outside the park. Now THAT is criminal. That pretty much sums it up. We knew it was comming. I just wish Ray would wait until the end of the year. Especially for the playoffs.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 08:52 AM) Interestingly, IIT is part of the plans for all that land from 35th south, just east of the Ryan. And part of their plan is for a courtyard of restaurants, bars and shops, near 35th. May not be a bad idea to get in on an early anchor lease. Problem is, there would be a gap of a year or two where they wouldn't be open. The condo plan has been "in the works" for over 2 years already now. For whatever reason they are in no rush to get the project going.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 08:40 AM) What "Jimbo" (or rather, his son) should do is invest money into space on the East Side of the Dan Ryan. Unless there's some vacant location in close proximity to the part I'm unware of, it wouldn't be a terrible idea. Hell, it may be several years before the area is built up, but pick in ideal spot and he'll be right in the middle of a huge economic rebirth. If this goes down I think they will just make their retirement place their perm place.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 08:38 AM) A guy on the whitesox.com message board posted August 10th that Jimbo's would be closing October 1st, with a possibility of remaining open for the playoffs. I'm sure Jimbo knew before a guy posting on a message board. Wow... It was a rumor. There were about 3,642 dates being talked about. The official notice was not sent until this week. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Ray was telling everyone but Jim and Joyce. He's like that.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 08:31 AM) This story has been all over the internet and was on the Score for more than a month. Jimbo has known its been coming for a while now. The August 26 date was just the formality. The possibility has been being talked about for over a year now. The date was not told. Ray initially said after Christmas back in March.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 08:18 AM) Couldn't Jimbo just find another spot and re-open? His place needs a makeover anyway. This kind of stuff happens everyday, and its the landlord's right to do what he's doing. Personally, I think if they fix it up and open their own restaurant/bar, it probably will do fine. I could understand Jimbo's frustration, as now the crowds come, he maximizes profit and loses his lease. Of course. Someone said the landlord is doing something wrong? Maybe he would, but it being where it is, IMO, is key to the success. I think the anger is more because of the kind and generous ONE month notice. Jim and Joyce secured their retirement fund long ago, so it's not about having to work.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 08:02 AM) Damn, damn, damn. On the other hand, it is hard to argue with a property owner that wishes to use his property in a legal manner. Unless the owner is looking to sell the building as condos, I think it's a bad business decision. But, like others have said, another place will have a hard time of it for the first year. I use to believe places like this can not be replaced, but time has proven they can be. Dye takes over for Maggs, Thome takes over for Thomas, Another bar takes over for Jimbo's. Time marches on. Another thought, Chicago being Chicago and the city I love, Jimbo's friends downtown could mention the difficulties in passing inspections that *could* happen if Jimbo's wasn't there. Not that anything like that would ever happen in the city. Ray, being "friends" with "all the right people" will have no issue with inspections. The public will have to fight this battle.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 07:45 AM) Talk to Jimbo, and ask him if he wants our help! If there is anything Soxtalk is good at, it is pounding the pavement to get something done. In the meantime, just let it be known right now if Ray Degrazia decides to open up his own little bar in place of Jimbo's, he might as well not even waste his time, because no real Sox fan will ever even piss in there. I just think that the best thing to do would be to show support. The media is going to be out there every home game getting reaction. And the angrier the fans are and demand that Jimbo's stay open is the best chance they have - at least to stay open for the playoffs this year. Jimbo has called Ray's attny everyday since getting the letter and they don't even have the courtesy to call back. And you are right about Ray opening something else up. It wont be pretty if he does. Anyone new will be screwed there.

I talked to Jimbo about this a little on Tuesday night and I'll see him again today to discuss. It's not final, but it doesn't look good. I know many don't like Jimbo's, but it's been a staple for 20 years of my fan career and if it closes it will be a very sad day. Jim asked a few "friends" downtown, but since it's not a license issue there isn't much to do other than appeal to the building owner. A few folks have suggested mass media pleading and a petition. But like I said, it's a personal thing so I don't know if that would have any impact.

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 06:23 AM) I was is in honors and took 4 (two per semester) college courses at Maria so I hear ya about not exactly remembering the requirements. Either that or this 30 thing is coming fast and furious (c'mon age, I have a few months left of my 20s let me enjoy it lol). Oh, it's all downhill after 30. 2 years in and becomming a grama has solidified my place in the "hag HOF".

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) I keep missing that Ozzie show. I watched an episode last night. It's very sweet. The next installment deals with him and Kenny building last years team. Sunday at 4:30.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 30, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) It should be to the point, business, and professional. What's wrong with that? Uhh... nothing. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 30, 2006 -> 11:33 PM) I may have misunderstood Steff's post. Yea, definitely don't fire people like Radio Shack just did. I know some one who got THE email. He's pissed. Yes, you may have. Rude!

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Aug 30, 2006 -> 10:10 PM) I had music in HS and I took Calc in my senior year. At Maria, if you were in the college-bound curriculum, Ialc was a must. Otherwise, you had to take a 4th year math (I think) but it was up to you which one you want to take (algebra I and II as well as geometry were mandatory). Now that I am thinking about it, I think Alg 2 may have been required also. I was in the AP program so I was all messed up. I had music also. QUOTE(bmags @ Aug 30, 2006 -> 08:07 PM) oh yeah you're right. i learned it in business classes too.... 4classes had accounting formulas...anyways i think math should be required for 3 years i don't care what any kids whine about. I don't see why it can't be required all 4 years
