So Sam is gone... peaceful for the most part.. but he did put up a fight. As it turns out he did have an issue with his bladder. When we took him in she did an exam first and noticed that it was swollen nearly 3 times the size it should be.. a clear indication that he has a tumor, and at the rate of growth definitely fatal. It gave me a bit of comfort.. but I was extremely sad. A lot of crying.. but a sense of relief for him as he took his last breath. Jim and I don't think we'll get anymore pets than the 3 others we have now. It was just too hard doing that... Thanks for the kind words everyone.
