  1. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 10:50 PM) I thought it would be very difficult for him to win if he got the nomination before that, I just think that he cost himself a lot of votes with the white community. Ive personally met a few people that have completely changed their minds about him in the past few days. I also think once the nomination is solidified for either candidate the republicans are going to unload on. I never understand why the democratic party doesnt understand the negative effect these smear campaigns have on the general election. Also, from your personal perspective, what in that speech was somehow offensive to whites? I just don't get that.

I also think once the nomination is solidified for either candidate the republicans are going to unload on. I never understand why the democratic party doesnt understand the negative effect these smear campaigns have on the general election. That's interesting. Personal experience aside (most people I know liked the speech but weren't swayed to/from by it), the polls seem to indicate the speech helped him out. Or something else did. Do you have any theories as to what else has caused him to go from 7 points down to 3 points up in national polls in the past few days (both Gallup and Rasmussen)? Honestly, the only people I've heard from, or read or seen, that didn't like the speech, were people who wouldn't have voted for him in the first place.
  3. I'd hate to throw the money away, but, at this point I think Lucy or Phillips would be significantly better in 2008. And in Lucy's case, that might set him up to learn a bit and be better off in 2009, when he was the likely plan for backup C anyway. And Hall isn't just a little weak, he's looked awful. I think its best they just release him, or DL him, and put Phillips or Lucy on the roster. Phillips is probably the better alternative, for now.
  4. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 09:32 PM) IMO that speech officially cost him the election if he gets the nomination. I would have thought it would be a slam dunk for the dems to pull this election off but I think this race is doing too much harm to either candidate. Of all the things that might blow it for Obama, you think it was his speech? To the contrary, I think that helped him significantly. And the polls seem to reflect that.
  5. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) I thought Toby Hall would be a lock to improve over last year. Now I'm not so sure. He's stealing money. I said it in yesterday's game thread... I think its possible that Paul Phillips comes north as the backup C. Not odds-on, but, possible.
  6. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 01:29 PM) I did like No Country for Old Men! And for the challenge I sent this board earlier (5 movies better than the book) that I never checked up on... The movie was better than the book in the case of No Country. I disagree - I thought the book was better. But the movie was indeed well done. Movies better than the book? --The Hunt for Red October --LOTR - all 3 Nothing else comes to mind at the moment, but I'll give it some more thought.
  7. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 04:30 PM) Gallup Daily: Obama Edges Ahead of Clinton So... do we think the recent resurgance for Obama is because of his speech? Or is it more of a return to baseline, now that the Wright thing is going away? Or something else?
  8. I like that he's staying out there, complete with the nose plug.
  9. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:44 PM) Quentin has been the forgotten man this spring. Yeah, which I don't get, if he's supposedly healthy. Either he really isn't yet, or they are not making a good decision there, in my opinion.
  10. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:44 PM) Uh-oh...you know what happened the last time a catcher played 1B. Hang on to that shoulder Phillips. They've had him over there a few times. Phillips is getting a lot of playing time.
  11. Lots of position changes. Ramirez at short - I haven't gotten to see him play there much.
  12. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) Heh, that was still such a s***ty throw to second. That play was really a perfect picture - Owens could be a pretty decent CF, except for the arm.
  13. I've contended that his glove work and approach in CF last season, as the season went on, started to approach average. His arm is the issue.
  14. With Phillips getting all this playing time, anyone think he has a shot to come north instead of Hall?
  15. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) Since Garland is gone, does that mean that Buehrle is the best hitting SP? Or is it Danks/Vazquez? I don't know about Danks' hitting, but Vazquez was better than all else previously (including Garland).
  16. Ramirez looked like he had a good stroke on the ball, but the bat shattered. Ball still got to medium LF. Floyd at the plate. He actually looks like he's not an awful hitter, by pitcher standards (by normal standards of course he looks awful).
  17. AJ getting booed a lot by the Giants fans. And these are the people who root for Barry Bonds.
  18. QUOTE(daa84 @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:06 PM) a bit of bad luck there on the hit and run as the ball was hit right to where the 2b would normally be...alright gavin, pitch over it...get the ground ball K works too.
  19. Two things I have seen from Floyd this spring so far that are important improvements over last year... First, he doesn't lose velocity when he goes to the stretch. That was something that seemed problematic. Second, his form looks more consistent. And that's something that Danks has yet to establish.
  20. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) DJ did as well. He took a bad route and the runner took third on his arm. I'll take Heads' word for it.
  21. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) Gavin as our 5th starter is going to be a huge mistake. He stunk it up in Philly (I've seen about 95% of his starts/appearances with Philly) and still hasn't even improved from that. I hope our 5th starter isn't on the team yet because if so, it's going to be a long season every 5th day. I am a little worried about Floyd. But I am more worried about Danks, and even more worried about Contreras.
