QUOTE(mr_genius @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 05:55 PM) You said that AQ likes the idea of a Christian conservative admin in the White House. So the Dems would meet atleast 50% of those requirements. A main tool for there recruiting is also the "lack of morals" and the "satanic way of life" in the United States. So basically, a Christian, pro-gay, pro-liberal ideals would be much more "satan like" than a conservative one. I would also imagine the Democrats would continue much of the policy towards Israel, therefore the recruting would be fine for these groups. I didn't think you were implying that this was a Christian crusade. ooooohhhhhhhh, now I see what you were getting at. I think I'm not getting my point across well. I don't think AQ cares one whiff about which party is in power, except for how it effects them directly. They are selfish, if you will. What policies they pursue about gay marriage or what not are ultimately small beans to them. What really effects their world, and what allows them to flourish, is the Iraq War, and to an extent the rest of the U.S. "war on terror" and Middle East policy. In that area, there is a clear difference between the parties, and I think its pretty clear that the GOP stand on staying the course is much more beneficial to AQ's cause than the U.S. pulling out.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 05:43 PM) So why can't Jason B. play 3B? That is the most puzzling and most anger-inducing move (or lack of) from this organization during the September call-ups. I just can't figure it out. -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 05:49 PM) Wow tough crowd. Training day and Remember the Titans were awesome imo. Yeah, and I actually liked Deja Vu and the Manchurian Candidate remake quite a bit. Training Day I didn't think was a particularly great movie (it had some very good elements), but I do think Denzel did a fantastic job in it.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 05:43 PM) Highly unlikely. Their attempts at destroying targets in the United States and killing US citizens has been greatly hindered by this admin. Your theory of "it helps recruiting" is also suspect. There were plenty of recruits well before the GW Bush presidency and the main tool was "jews / Isreal" and the United States support of them. And aren't most Democrats Christians as well? The entire theory has so many holes in it. Their ability to strike the U.S. is a little less, but that isn't even what I was talking about - recruiting is going pretty darn well by all accounts, all over the Middle East and in other regions. And what on earth does the fact that Dems are Christians have to do with it? I never said anything about crusades or what not, that was someone else.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) Well, the one from this week was him saying something along the lines of Iowa was first in the caucus and primary season... And to top that off...his defense of those remarks when he was asked later what he meant...he didn't even go with the "Botched joke" one...he just came out and said "oh that was just pandering". Not the biggest gaffe in history, but certainly something that would have gotten him laughed at had he been higher in the polls. Thanks.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) I don't disagree with that at all. But which is more dangerous? I don't think we will have a definitive answer to that question, but I will say that cowering to their wishes and "dialogue" will not work with these people. I also agree with Rex that Al Queda is an idealogue based organization who has no qualms about destroying anything that is not 100% on board to their views, including their own Islamic home bases. Again with labels like "cowering to their wishes". Strident and untrue. The U.S. should have a foreign policy which first and foremost protects our national security - that is reason number one to leave Iraq.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) Fresh off a couple statements in the past week or so that have just made him look foolish, Bill Richardson goes back to the issue where he may well be the strongest candidate: Iraq, and the fact that he's the only major candidate to say "get every U.S. soldier out". I don't know if that is his strongest issue. But just curious, what statements are you referring to that were foolish?

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) Brewers were up 8-1....and now it's 8-5. Needless to say, I won't be very happy if they happen to blow this. Its over, Brewers won 10-5. Cubs lost by the same score. Cubs now 1 game back in the NLC. STL to play tonight, will be either 2 or 3 games back of MIL, 1 or 2 back of CHC.

QUOTE(Brian @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 03:22 PM) Yep, but as long as we are trying Fields in left, it's him or Andy at 3rd for the last month. Unless Pablo comes back this month. -
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 01:11 PM) Al Queda wants war, but not in their own back yard. Yes or no? And to me what you're saying only emphasizes my point even more about the two sides using the same rhetoric. You're making it a better arguement then I have. Al Qaeda wants war period - and so much the better for them being in their backyard, where recruting is so much easier. I don't disagree that SOME of UBL's stances appear to be similar to SOME of those of SOME Democrats. Same can be said for SOME views of the GOP, by the way. But whereas you think its because the Democrats are somehow wimps that want to surrender, I think its because AQ loves the idea of the christian conservative element staying in control in the U.S. It means more business for them.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 12:04 PM) I AM saying that the poltical discourse of wanting our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan are mutual to the line of thinking of both Al Queda and the Democrats. I'd say its the opposite. Al Qaeda wants war. They are feigning support of an anti-war cause in order to try to bolster those (generally, the GOP) that support the war.

Bad as the 'pen was from early May though July, I think the group as it stands is not a horrible starting point for 2008. I tend to agree with those who think that at least Jenks/Logan/Wassermann are locked in, and I'd say Thornton as well. Then there are those like O Perez, and MMac, who should get a look. Unless some surprisingly good deal comes along, I'd hope KW spends the money in places other than the bullpen.

I can't wait until one of the ladies in the video shows it to the cops, and they're arrested for sexual battery. If convicted of it, they'd be in the sex offenders database and marked for life. Yeah, that would be hilarious.

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) now this is a thread which should be shut down. The topic still has plenty of good territory to play out. I'd like to keep the discussion open. That said, if it can't rise above the snark and absurdity, then we'll see.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 08:37 AM) Russel Crowe is the most likable (not lickable) bad ass in chaps. Saw "3:10 to Yuma" last night. I loooooved it. Crowe has in the top 5 best actors alive: (De Niro, Crowe, Pacino, Bale (in tie for first), and tie for fifth with Denzel and Tom hanks. Minus points to Denzel for making s***ty movies now and minus points for Tom hanks for making s***ty movies in the past) So anyway, this film has two of the top 5, PLUS, Peter Fonda, Luke Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Ben Foster, Alan Tudyk, and Gretchen Mol... funniest thing I read from IMDB.com: Eric Bana was in initial negotiations to star opposite Tom Cruise in this film. (Bana would have been decent, but Cruise would have had to use one of those midget horses.) Better than the original? Just curious.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 08:07 AM) Amazing. I wish I had the time to check another source or two. That seems so one sided it almost doesn't seem accurate. My thoughts exactly. That wasn't a news story so much as a editorial. Not that I'd disbelieve any individual piece of it, but the work itself suggests a complete lack of objectivity.

Well this is hands-down the most embarrassing thread I've seen in my time in the 'Buster. I won't even bother trying to clean up anything, and instead say this: please, please, lets try to keep away from labelling all liberals as being like Al Qaeda (and yes Kap, that is 100% precisely what you did), and from labelling all the conservatives as brainless or otherwise stupid for wanting to stay the course. And I'll add just one talking point. If indeed the rhetoric being spewed by UBL has some similarities to stands taken by the Democrats... has it occurred to anyone that may have been done intentionally to try to keep the GOP in power in order to sustain the war? And that UBL and AQ have a vested interest in keeping the war going? Just something to consider.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 03:18 PM) Are you ready to go into the implications of taxcuts again? I think Tex has been busy enough in the other threads, he might have to give up sleep Eh, I already know your thoughts, and I think you know mine. I don't agree with Romney relying on economic growth for the cost, but in general, I think he has the right idea. I don't think any spending should ever rely on projected or expected economic growth - its too risky. It should be an accounting-wise money-for-money trade off.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 03:14 PM) I believe he was capable of handling the job. I liked his early cabinet choices, his faith based initiatives, and a few other things. If you haven't done so already, I'd read some of the Woodward books, particularly the first one (and remember that Woodward was not some outsider liberal, he was invited to the White House and well-respected there). He has been incapable of the job since day 1. And I also agreed with some of his early cabinet choices, but let's look at those. Powell was the best of the bunch, and he got run out of the building by the neo-cons. Rumsfeld, I am embarrassed to say, I actually agreed with at the time. But it became obvious very quickly he was not doing well, and Bush let him linger. Everyone else, well, look at what they turned out to be. And remember, I voted for the guy. I thought he was better equiped that Gore to do the job right. Apparently, I was wrong. One other thing - most Presidents, particularly 2-termers, get better at the job as time goes on. Amazingly, Bush has actually continued to be just as bad, and maybe even worse. He has lost control of much of his own leadership of the executive. He is, regardless of the type of "guy" he is, a horrible President.

QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 02:42 PM) Could care less, your favorite player probably does it too, even though this still doesn't show he did it after it was banned. I really must laugh at you if you still support the sport and haven't accepted the reality yet, you shouldn't be shocked, even if it came out about ARod or even Frank Thomas (my fav player by the way). Albert Pujols, from Brooklyn streets straight to MLB superstar? Wasn't Ortiz basically cut by the Twins? Then he becomes surefire MVP candidate overnight. Etc OMGZ it was illegal, so is what a lot of ball players do in their free time, some of which may also "enhance" performance during a game. Boy, again, those are some great arguments. Its like the kid who tells their parents "but other kids do it!" The fact that lots do it does not make it any more right. And who said they were shocked? I see no one in the thread who is shocked by any of this.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 02:57 PM) Honestly, what went wrong for Dubya? As I've stated many times I really like the guy personally. I would love for him to have done well. Standing on that mound of rubble with the bull horn and he had America lock stock and barrel. Had he duplicated that with the hurricane, he could have rode another couple years. What went wrong? You mean other than the fact that it was clear from early on that he wasn't capable of handling the job? Seriously, the list is so long I wouldn't know where to start.

Also, some parts of the Patriot Act were struck down by a U.S. District Court judge yesterday. And oh yeah, the economy is now losing jobs. Really not a good week for BushCo.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 01:52 PM) I also saw seven again the other night, and had forgotten how good the movie was. There was actually suspense to it, which is hard to find anymore. Yeah, as I was just saying earlier, the horror genre (I'd call Seven something between horror and suspense) is pretty devoid of any quality nowadays. Fincher even managed to make Alien3 a good movie, when it really shouldn't have been. Fight Club was also quite good. I really hope he stays on track to do Rendezvous with Rama.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 01:47 PM) I really enjoyed the movie a lot. It was very good for really not having an ending in real life. Yeah, we just watched it the other night, and loved it. Fincher really has a great touch. I can think of no director that can find more range within the black-brown-grey spectrum (of colors and of characters).
