  1. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 09:26 AM) but did they win or just last real long? Sorry, that was supposed to be LOST.
  2. This article details some more personnel moves... --Ricks is going back to W-S today after spot duty with Charlotte --Kyle McCulloch (SP), Cole Armstrong © and David Cook (OF) are all being promoted to Birmingham (AA) The latter set of moves seems to confirm earlier rumors that Lucy and Collaro are being promoted to Charlotte (AAA), but the starting pitching move indicates that maybe one of the B-Ham starters is going to Charlotte as well (perhaps Eggy? Heads, are you there?).
  3. QUOTE(bbmom @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 08:11 AM) Mccullough and armstrong are moving up today...looks like Ricks is going back down.Cook is also moving up. Up to B-Ham or to Charlotte for McCullough and Armstrong? David Cook - that's interesting. And why move Ricks up for 2 games, then send him back down? I swear, its like the Sox minor league system suddenly went schizophrenic the last few days.
  4. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 07:33 AM) Vick would have been far better off if he abided by the laws of the land. He's getting what he deserves. He is an idiot. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Perfectly, succinctly put. Thank you DA.
  5. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 09:58 PM) No word yet on who is getting called up. By the way, where did you read that? I can never figure out where you guys get this news, because its never on the team sites. ETA: This article from yesterday says Sweeney has been bothered by a sore wrist, and also adds that Wiki Gonzalez has a sore elbow (see Tidbits under Charlotte).
  6. BB2ZZ had said that it was Collaro and Lucy, though I could not find confirmation. Also, they played Rogowski and Bourgeois in the outfield yesterday. ???
  7. Check out the Charlotte box. bourgeois is in CF, Rogowski is in LF, Ricks is at 3B, Snyder at SS, and E. Sierra started the game... weirdness abounds. Oh, and they last 5-4.
  8. QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 08:33 PM) oh yeah, Sweeney didn't play again today. Either he is injured, which is a strong possibility as he has only played 1 inning in the past 3 games, or he is about to get called up and one of Erstad or Thome are going onto the DL, if not both. There has been a lot of player personnel activity in Charlotte, so who knows. Ricks, Perez, and now Lucy and Collaro have all been called up there. Molina was let go, probably more of those to come.
  9. QUOTE(BB2ZZ @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 07:01 PM) Lucy got called up to Charlotte today along with another Baron. Sure would be nice to get a press release on moves they make, especially AFTER they make them!! Where are you finding this info? I'd love to know the source. Can't find it anywhere. I assume the other player is Collaro? So, now the Knights have 4 catcher. But, Ricks is playing 3B today, and the starting catcher is some dude named Ryan Smith who is hitting .108 (and who has started the last two games). WTF is going on down there?
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) The most predictable failure KW's tenure, bringing in a mediocre 33 year old with a 63 year old woman's body to be the starting CF on your supposed World Series contending team . . . brilliant! Thing is, when he was supposedly going to be a 4th OF to help guide Anderson a bit, I was happy with the signing. Seemed like a good move. But Ozzie AND KW went off the tracks when they chose Erstad out of ST. So frustrating.
  11. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 03:14 PM) Amazing. There were that many people and more getting killed every day by Saddam's regime. Now, the good 'ol US of A is TOTALLY responsible for the mess over there. Not Al Queda, not repressed people lashing out because they can, not idiots hell-bent on creating a civil war, THE US is responsible for all of this. Not even close. Since 2003, that's 4 years, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died (not even to mention thousands of non-Iraqi soldiers like ours, and contractors as well). You can add up all the maniacal stuff Saddam did in his 30 years and it wouldn't touch that number. In fact, while Iraq was no heaven, they did have power, schools, business, and some degree of safety on the street. Sorry Kap, but WE turned that country into what it is today. We invaded it, we made it a battle ground. There are lots of reasons for having done it, some maybe even have some legitimacy. But there is no denying that its in the shape it is because of us.
  12. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) According to Ozzie, he has to have a decent start to have more than 1. And that is the real shame. If you want to use the 5th slot as a tryout, then you really need to give whomever is there a real shot. Give them a month. If they fail, give someone else September.
  13. QUOTE(SoxFan77 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 03:00 PM) If you say so.. then it must be true.. show me a GM in the history of this franchise who won games more consistently, or won more championships. Heck, even using playoff appearances as a measure, there have only been 5 since 1959 and he has 1 of them, plus he was AVP for player development leading up to another one in 2000. Show me a more effective GM in Sox history (there may be one, but it would be waaaaaay back).
  14. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 02:41 PM) And America is 100% at fault. /rolly Well, yes, we are. We invaded a country, and now we own it. Congratulations on your purchase. Good luck trying to take any of the equity out of it.
  15. QUOTE(SoxFan77 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 02:37 PM) 1 divisional title... OO man stop the press and anoint him into Copperstown.. GREATEST GM EVER FOR THE WHITE SOX.. Quite possibly. Almost definitely the best of the last half century.
  16. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 02:37 PM) Is it wrong if I thought of posting the same exact thing? Any way, it does make a point. Here, it becomes a tragedy given national coverage for days. It'll be thoroughly analyzed and investigated. In Iraq, it is just another day. Tomorrow there will be more bombings, more fighting. No need to worry about a dozen people being blown up today, another dozen will go tomorrow. That's what I was hinting at.
  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) An average day in Iraq... Could also be an average day in Minneapolis.
  18. A few financial items that might be discussion worthy... So the markets had a bit of a panic, partially due to the whole sub-prime mortgage phenomenon, and there is a general fear that the big housing boom followed by the correction means a lot of mortgages will fail. Some are even predicting massive doom. There is a CNN article discussing these things, but also, the increasing realization that the economic recovery of 2003-2005 was in great part fueled by the housing boom. So putting defaults aside, another major danger to the economy is that the absurdly high consumer spending propelled by home equity dollars will have to dwindle. I'll be obnoxious here and say that I mentioned this a couple years ago. Anyway, its becoming reality now. How bad will it get? Also on the mortgage subject, saw another article on a neat mortgage tool gaining steam in the U.S. It originated in Australia. Its much like a standard variable mortgage or HELOC, except instead of making payments against it, you actually deposit your paychecks to it, and pay out against other bills. this means your avg daily balance is lower, saving a bit on interest every month, and you have the potential to save tens of thousands in the long run. Only practical for those making positive net ground, though. What do people think of this? I might consider it in a few years, when its time to look to move out of the city and into a house somewhere. And here is one more question - are stocks still overvalued, or did the correction last week take care of that?
  19. Just to take this in a slightly different direction... The one thing I hope does NOT happen to either Floyd or Haeger is to put him in the fifth slot, have him pitch one game, and then pull him out. That is utterly pointless, and will only destroy their confidence. If you are going to give one or the other a shot at this point, then give them a solid 4 or 5 starts.
  20. QUOTE(dasox24 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) Great story out of Memphis... I lived in Memphis for a few years. That town shows up in some form of news-of-the-stupid waaaaaay more often than a town its size should.
  21. QUOTE(SoxFan77 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 01:35 PM) 1. So Cotts, Polette, Herminson are all had great years in 06.. no.. What about 07.. No.. Hmm okay what about 04.. NO.. Hmmm 2. Did we make the playoffs? What does a win total care.. If we won 81 and made the playoffs is a better achievement.. But, it seems you like to settle on meaningless accomplishments. to justify your position. No one remembers a 90 win 3rd place team in 4 years.. 3. So you don't hold him accountable for putting a crappy bullpen in there every year? Let me guess its Ozzie's fault right, or whatever the manager is? It seems you like to blame the wrong people.. ie, Ozzie can't make the effiel tower out two pounds of crap KW gave him.. but you expect it. 4. and 01,02,03,04,06..All of which we missed the playoffs because of KW contructed failures. Coaches can only work with what they are given.. When you give them crap, it shows up on the field. Ozzie, Tony LaRussa, Jim Leyland.. none could have made this team win this year... or any previous years.. Kw point blank does not know how to build a complete team.. HUGE RED FLAG. Dude, you crack me up. I give. You win. One of the winningest GM's in baseball today, and one of the few current ones with world champioship, but you're right. He sucks. And clearly he can't build a complete team. Please carry on.
  22. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 01:20 PM) Im sure I could find some one to dispell the 100 ip thing, but right now Sergio Mitre who had eras of 6.6, 5.3, and 5.7 is off the top of my head. Carmona had a 5.4 era last year, Jeff Francis had a 5.8 era in his first season. Kazmir had a 5.67 in his first 30 ip. Not that any of these guys will be All-Star Aces, but at the same time I think that it shows many pitchers take time to develop at the MLB level. Garland had an era of 6.46 in his first 70 ip. Unprecedented is the hyperbole of the week. (Edit) In 2000 Roy halladay had an era of 10+ UNPRECEDENTED I tell you. UNPRECEDENTED. And that trade with Philly still turns out, at this point, to work well for the Sox. Floyd and Garcia might be a wash right now, but Gio is the difference. We'll see in a couple years, but unless Garcia magically pulls his 95 mph fastball back out of the depths and Gio and Floyd both bust, I'd say the Sox made out on the deal.
  23. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 01:19 PM) I'm with Fathom on this one Northside. Looking back on it, the combo of Cotts-Cliff-Hermanson-Bobby was one of the main reasons why 2005 was so special. That bullpen was out of its mind, and Cliff, Cotts and Hermanson will never come close to matching those 2005 numbers, and never did before that. Everything else I agree with, like I usually do. You guys are right about them. remember too though, the team went through a couple closers before Bobby, one of which (Shingo) was getting lit up. Plus the Marte fiasco. So yeah, probably half the pen or a little more had career years, that's true.
  24. QUOTE(SoxFan77 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 12:52 PM) I am using perspective.. 1 playoff stint in 7 years.. which was based on allot of player having career years. I could care less about meaningless accomplishments.. Whoopie we won 86 games but failed to make the playoffs. making the playoffs is what I would call successful. And simply under KW we have failed to do it on a constant basis, because he simply cannot build a complete team. Now we are going to have a bad stretch of 3-4 years, because we have no farm system and the over priced players we have aren't worth the contract paper they signed. How is it the Twins were able to make it to the playoffs 4 times in 5 years, can make a trades.. that benfit a club for years..not just a year? How is it that Braves can win 14 divional titles, miss the playoffs once and look to go back the following year? I was calling for KW firing back in 03, after having season tickets and watched as he threw together a scrap heep called a bullpen, adn wonder why the Twins caught us in the end. So don't think it is just because of this year, he got a free pass last year because of 05.. but the free pass is over, its time to see what he is.. a below avg GM. But if you want to defend a failure.. go ahead, that is your gig.. you can be like WCSox.. who disagrees with me.. Who also think Pablo should be playing 2b, Uribe SS and ROb Mac in LF.. would make us a winner again... . If KW can fix this sinking ship and we are back in the playoffs next year, I will be the first to eat my words.. My guess and his track record.. I have nothing to worry about. 1. 2005 career years? Not a single player on the offense had a career year. The bullpen was good but not great. The only "career" years were among some of the starting staff. 2. 86 games? Did you mean 90 in 2006? Because the great majoriry of teams coming of world series don't even win that many. 3. As I have said before, I'd suggest that the GM isn't the one that the little things can be held to. The GM is responsible for putting players on the field who make the team competitive, and as capable of winning as possible given the salary constraints (which some of you seem to forget, were fairly tight until 2006). He has done that as well as any GM in the game. During his years here, this team has been in the playoff hunt at least into the second half every year but one or two. As far as I can tell, that's pretty darn good. Now, you want to talk about having the desire, the stuff to make the leap into actually making the playoffs... that sits with the players and coaches. 4. Again, this year sucks, and I am not saying Williams has done everything right. I am just pointing out that your strident statements about Kenny being the worst thing since moldy bread are not in line with reality.
  25. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 11:27 AM) Because Floyd has zero percent chance to succeed at this point. He has been given a "few starts" in the major leagues over four different years, most of them in the weaker league (and a weak division in that league! Nationals, anyone?) The other players can be groomed to be successful. Floyd is done. It does not matter where he was drafted. Like I said, find another player that has a 7.32 career ERA for 100+ innings. Floyd has ZERO chance, but the others can be "groomed"? Let's try again to have some perspective here. I can't see how anyone can say that someone with Floyd's tools has ZERO chance, but that Haeger can be "groomed".
