  1. QUOTE(Chisox_fan @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) I know. I thought it was obvious he was talking about the call but I guess some people get confused. Its obvious with the previous graf, but as a single sentence in the first post, it makes it look like he was talking about the demotion.
  2. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 10:02 AM) Apparently everyone who thinks 14 innings isn't enough, disregarding his previous 111 in the major leagues, thinks 11 is more than enough to judge a guy who is even younger than Floyd and still a baby throwing a knuckler. I for one think that Floyd deserves a shot - give him August. But I also think that Haeger might be good if given a chance. Both are maybes. But I agree that if you think one is deserving of a look, the other should be as well.
  3. QUOTE(SoxFan77 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 09:26 AM) Huh, reports where Willy Mo Pena and someone else.. for DYE.. I don't see the point of having Dye anymore unless he is the DH.. which he won't be. If we resign Dye we are even in worse shape. And we can't draft for Crap.. WE are screwed man. The reason I am not the GM.. I am not involved in Sports other than for recreation. I would love to become the GM.. Hell can't do much worse! Excuses...Point is we have lost badly to a bad Yankee team. With SP that KW banked on for the next couple of years.. Danks gets a sorta pass.. but Jose LMAO.. we are stuck with the pile of crap for 2 years.. amazing. And who exactly are we bringing in below market value? Good teams sustain winning (for more than one year) because of their farm system. Really you call this winning.. Hell I need what your definition is of losing then. Try to have some perspective here. KW has been winning, more so than most GM's in fact, in his time here. If yo want to get all up in arms and think he is the worst ever, fine, but the facts show quite the opposite. Yes, this year sucks. But KW has absolutely been a successful GM in the grand scheme. You will find very few other GM's (if any) who have won as many games in the same time span as he has.
  4. July update for D Lucy… Donny had an OK July. His average was down a bit at .250 (was .296 in June), but his OBP was actually higher at .357 (was .333 in June). As seems to be the trend, Lucy picks one particular area of hitting to work on in a given month – this month apparently it was taking walks, which he did 10 times in 82 PA’s (he had 20 in 253 the previous months combined). He also has started stealing more bases – he was 6 for 6 in July, and is now 13 for 14 (92.8%) on the season. He ended the month on a high note – he is hitting .343 in his last 10 games. Here are his July splits: AVG: .250 G: 22 AB: 72 R: 11 H: 18 2B: 3 3B: 0 HR: 2 RBI: 10 BB/K: 10/19 SB/ATT: 6/6 OBP: .357 SLG: .375 OPS: .732 And his season stats so far (includes the game on 8/1): AVG: .269 G: 87 AB: 290 R: 42 H: 78 2B: 17 3B: 0 HR: 6 RBI: 27 TB: 113 BB/K: 30/59 SB/ATT: 13/14 OBP: .343 SLG: .390 OPS: .732 After Gustavo Molina was taken off waivers by Baltimore, leaving a catching slot open in Charlotte, it seemed likely that Lucy was headed for a promotion to AAA. Instead, Adam Ricks from Winston-Salem jumped AA and took that slot. It is unclear why this occurred, given Ricks’ lackluster performance and recent move to catching, but its possible that Ricks is to be a backup in Charlotte behind Wiki. This would allow Lucy to continue to start in B-Ham. Seems to me that Gonzalez doesn’t have much a future here though, so I’d rather see Lucy starting in Charlotte, but we’ll see how things go. ETA: Forgot to update his SB/CS numbers against. in July, he threw out 36% of runners attempting to steal. Since 4/21, he has thrown out 45% of runners attempting to steal. On the season total, he has throw out 39% of attempted base stealers.
  5. I already disliked Sanders. Now this statement. Rarely have I wanted so badly for awful things to happen to two people.
  6. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 08:38 AM) I've heard it was just cosmetic though. It doesn't really matter if it was under construction, as there were lanes closed, but the bridge wasn't closed down. We all drive on bridges all the time under construction. Somebody doing the inspection a few years ago made a serious goof, or something freakish has happened since then. They'll know for sure what happened in a while. According to the CNN article, an inspection in 2001 revealed significant fatigue issues in the bridge spans, and that if cracks developed in certain places, a collapse was possible (but not a given). But the same report also said that the cracks were unlikely to occur, and that the fixes could be postponed. If the inspection was done by a private firm, I'm guessing they just went out of business.
  7. I don't think that any single player should ever be 50% of the payroll, let alone with an 8 year contract. That's like putting your retirement into one stock. Sure, it might be a great stock, but the risk in doing that is enormous. Like, devastating the organization for a decade type enormous. We'd all love to see him here, but no player is worth that relative price (relative to payroll - if you are the Yankees with a $250M payroll, maybe it makes sense).
  8. QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 09:36 PM) CNN reporting 6 dead. Tragic but thought it would be a lot more from the pics. Now 9 dead, but still 20 to 30 missing - at this late a stage, many of the missing will be found dead.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 09:05 PM) It's a good plan if it's done nationwide. If it's only done in California, or in CA plus a few other states, it hands the election to the Republicans until enough states follow. A few years ago there was a measure in the Legislature here to do just that...if and when the equivalent of 270+ electoral votes worth of the country does the same thing, and that was a measure worth supporting. I believe it passed, but I'd have to look it up. That is the key - has to be done across the board. Splitting just Cali will help only one party. Splitting all states is a move in the right direction, though still not nearly as effective as a national vote.
  10. Confirmed my suspicion. Here is the quote, in proper context: Link to article. Haeger was NOT talking about the demotion, he was talking about the ejection.
  11. QUOTE(Chisox_fan @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 12:03 AM) Yahoo: I don't see the article (no link provided), but are you sure he wasn't talking about getting ejected? Because he was upset about that obviously.
  12. QUOTE(JPN366 @ Aug 2, 2007 -> 12:56 AM) He played in both the Warthogs game and the Knights game today. 4 at bats each. Wow - I wonder how often that has happened - starting games for two teams in one day.
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 08:53 PM) In all seriousness, that's about how I feel about it. We committed a lot to get this kid, so we might as well see what he is made of. No time like now, when the games really don't matter. Exactly.
  14. WTF? Ricks' numbers weren't even that good at W-S. Why skip over Lucy? Of course, Ricks is playing 3B tonight, not catcher, so maybe there is something else up. Or maybe they want Wiki to get starter time at Charlotte, and Ricks will be the backup C. Or maybe they want Ricks to go back to being a 3B? Who knows. Some of these moves just seem odd to me. ETA: MILB's site is screwed up. Where did you read this anyway? Just curious.
  15. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 11:05 AM) But we haven't picked the wrong target. To use Bin Landin's own words, the "war front" is now Iraq. According to their own plans, if they wait us out, they will win, all because the American people can't stand to be in a real war. And we haven't "blown s*** up" - not the way we need to. Too messy... and *gasp* we can't have CASULTIES. The truth is, we will, and in order to justify what's happened already, we have to make this work, like it or not, and getting out of there now is not the answer. By many accounts, even those coming from the MSM (*GASP*), the "surge" is starting to work. The idea of securing areas and not letting control of it go is making progress and stabilizing what they can. If it's stable long enough, things will start getting done (which is why the electricity/water issues, etc. - people can't get out to work on it due to instability). We're in a position that we have to hold the security long enough to raise the standard. Iraq must do its part. If they don't then it doesn't matter. I can't think that most ordinary citizens over there wants to keep going like it has. If they see themselves that stability is coming, they'll respond. You can't be serious. Of course its the war front NOW, because we invaded! How can you say we picked the right target, when our choice of target resulted in that situation?
  16. So some of you have probably been following this issue, but I don't see a thread on it. BP wants to dump about 1500 pounds of new pollution every day into Lake Michigan. The state of Indiana allowed their restrictions, more stringent than existing federal standards, to be loosened for this to occur. The new pollution still falls within federal limits. The U.S. congress, under pressure from the voters, passed a bi-partisan measure urging the EPA to stop it. The EPA, today, said no. So here is the real problem - the EPA says its within federal limits, so they can't act. Except, they seemed to have forgotten the part of the Clean Water Act that says NO INCREASE OF POLLUTION LEVELS can be permitted. Seems smart, and to me, crystal clear. Unfortunately, this adminsitration seems to think that the world is its personal litter box, so the EPA issues their bogus statement. I am 95% sure a lawsuit will be brought very, very soon, since the EPA's stand seems to clearly violate the Clean Water Act. We discuss global warming a lot, but sometimes forget about jsut plain common sense environmentalism. We get our drinking water from that lake, we eat fish from that lake, and thousands of people's careers are staked on having a clean lake. It would be nice if BushCo would consider that.
  17. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:41 AM) Fine... "bad war"... ok, whatever. I disagree, but whatever. Every time someone, anyone, says just go in there, blow s*** up, get things under control on the ground (after all, the army was made to blow stuff up, not be a peacekeeping, rebuilding group), and restore order enough that the Iraqis can stand on their own two feet (that is what I mean by "get it right" instead of this half ass, "don't offend anyone with my policies" crap we see now) we see this sarcastic, "what do you know we don't" line from BS. Offer some substance to it, just don't throw the "neener neener neener I was RIGHT !!!111!1!!!" stuff that's out there. Maybe because we think that "blowing s*** up" won't help matters. Hasn't worked well so far, has it? We picked the wrong target. Why keep throwing bodies and money at it, when those could be used so much more effectively elsewhere?
  18. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:44 AM) Hey, now we agree on something... sorta (on the Pakistan/Afghanistan bit). I know the "snake" can operate without it's head, so to speak (the old Al Queda mantra), but destroying the head is so symbolic... that it needs to be done at any cost. I guess what bothers me is that we were going to chase down the enemies, and we haven't done crap - now again - because of the "political ramifications" of said actions going into Iraq. Political drama be damned. Get over there, take care of the issues, and get back home. Fixed for ya.
  19. QUOTE(BamaJason @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:38 AM) Not JPN, but I will add a little to this. Lucy was at the game last night. I think he deserves a promotion, but I would really hate to see him go. He is a helluva guy and great to watch. I've been away with a death in the family for a few days and am just now hearing about Molina leaving Charlotte, but can't find anything about it? What's going on? Here is the G Molina thread. If he was there last night, maybe they don't intend to promote him. Just seemed like a good time to do so. They are now saying Kenny Perez will be promoted. Why him I don't know.
  20. Obama says we should be focused on Afghanistan and Pakistan, including possibly putting troops inside Pakistan with or without permission. I tend to agree - we went way off the tracks going into Iraq. You want to really fight Al Qaeda, the military part of that mission needs to go to their base of operation. We left Afghanistan far too early.
  21. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:06 AM) According to your camp, getting out now. Since the easy answer is to "get out", what would you suggest, other then that, seeing as how I never see ANY answers from people like you. No, you first. Then I'll answer. You do realize the irony in even asking that question, yes? Sqwert disagreed with the war from the beginning, said it was a bad idea. The war happens, and goes badly, as predicted. Then someone who supports the war (your "camp") insists that Sqwert come up with an answer, and further says, but don't give me your previously stated answer. To use one of your lines, Kap... come on, you know better than that.
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:19 AM) Andy Gonzalez will be on the bench next year and I'd say there's a 50/50 chance you see Cintron retained. Maybe on Gonzalez. But I think Cintron is gone. And Cintron isn't a very good thirdbaseman
  23. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:01 AM) Since Dye has said nothing regarding his future contract desires - per the request of his employer not to negotiate contracts during the season - I guess we should wait until he does so we can offer up realistic suggestions and not be poopy to those who chose to remain optimistic about him. Actually, he has said (and so has his agent) on more than one occasion he wants to keep playing here.
  24. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 10:03 AM) Why is putting Contreras out there every 5th game just giving the game away, and putting Floyd out there something different? As bad as Contreras has been, Floyd is just as if not more awful. At least Contreras has a history to suggest he may someday find success again. Putting Floyd out there sends the wrong message to others in the organization. Reward younger pitchers for results, not because they were part of a deal for a popular pitcher. Because we've invested in Floyd, and he was strong in AAA under THIS organization. So I say give him a real starting shot - don't tell him he is starting ONCE. Tell him he gets 4 starts, then can earn more - that is how you build confidence. If he pitches, great. If he sucks, then give September to Haeger.
  25. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 09:25 PM) omg, I was wondering when our top prospect Kenny Perez was gonna get promoted to AAA. He will probably dominate Charlotte like he did in Birmingham, don't you think? With Molina leaving, why promote Perez? Why not Donny Lucy, to take that catcher slot and see if he really can be an option to replace Hall or AJP some day? Perez ain't replacing anyone.
