  1. For the money, and what it would take to get him... I'll take a pass.
  2. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 08:49 AM) Question: By purposely not voting for either, can you in fact be making your voice heard that a change is needed in the system? I have a hard time wrestling with this one, because the only other way you could say that is voting an alternate party candidate, and they'll never win, or even come anywhere close to where a message is sent. Anyways, I think it's becoming clear nationwide (but especially in Illinois) that a new voice is needed, probably a 3rd party, with all the lies and extremism both parties are resorting to. Political moderation is dying and getting close to being completely dead among those with the power. Not voting may send the message, but it also creates a further rift between the people and their representatives. If alternative parties started getting 5 or 10% of the vote, that would send a pretty big message. If more people voted in the primaries, that would help too - that is often where the few good candidates are. We also need election reform, and that is something we can push our Reps on if we really care enough.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 09:35 PM) They're never going to get all of it back, but it would certainly be nice if they could get enough to get the Owens river flowing again. A few projects have actually managed to succeed in getting a few drops out of L.A. Mono Lake is ever so slowly going back up a little bit...and a few years ago they began irrigating the now dry Owens lake, because the dust from it was a major component of the air pollution out here (seriously, the clean air act made L.A. give up a little bit of its water). And anyway, it's not like L.A. is the only area out here that has stolen water. Mexico would love to get a few more drops of the Colorado River, but that ain't happening, and then there's the whole mess with Lake Powell on top of that. Water resources are going to be some of the most interesting and volatile debates in the next century as populations continue to increase and climate patterns shift rapidly. Water is an issue that much of the country is only vaguely aware of. Its of course a huge issue in the most parts of the West. And it will be a larger and larger issue going forward. If the current policies of choosing drilling over water keep occurring, I'll remain convinced that most lawmakers are blissfully ignorant of the problem. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 10:06 PM) I think it's sort of strange to talk about "early voting". Absentee, ya, I understand. But "early voting"? That's one of the things that they said skewed the exit polling on election day two years ago. Kind of weird, to me. I like it. In fact, I personally think voting should be a period of a couple weeks anyway, instead of 1 day. It woudl result in higher turnout, less problems with people not getting to vote, a chance for agencies to shake out any problems with time to spare... lots of positives.
  4. I'll be voting early, this week, since I'll be on the road on 11/7. For those who are in the Chicago area... Illinois does now allow open early voting, up until 5 days prior to the election, at a number of locations. For those of you who work downtown, one of the locations is good old 69 W. Washington. Linky for IL early voting
  5. QUOTE(Soxy @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 02:14 PM) Because she served her whole term, even though everyone said she would run in 2004 despite her pledge to serve the entire term. Kap and I kind of had that discussion on the previous page. Ah, sorry, I thought Rex was referring to other things said about her and her chances of winning. Got it.
  6. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 02:17 PM) I do believe strongly in personal responsibility and it bothers me when people are unwilling to stand up and call for change when murder, bombings, terrorism, blatant discrimination against women and an overall lack of tolerance for anything but their own view of things dominates. That I can agree with.
  7. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 02:11 PM) To Hillary's credit, they said the same things about her in 2000 too. Just curious... why is that a good thing?
  8. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) That figure of 30,000 is totally innacurate. Really? Besides, this is just obfuscating the point. Whether its 20k or 40k, I wasn't really talking about gun violence. I am talking about your willingness to write off an entire nation, religion, creed or any other category because of the actions of some members of those categories. If you really believe in personal responsbility as you claim, then how about judging people on THEIR actions, and not that of their neighbors.
  9. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 01:44 PM) I don't see how "erroneous" certain statements are when Muslims are in a horserace with the Sudanese to see how many innocent people they can knock off in any given time period. Oh wait, a lot of the Sudanese ARE Muslims. I'll take religon of mass murder for 2000 Alex. And you will be just as accurate as someone who thinks that Americans are a bunch of violent, gun-crazy lunatics, because 30,000 people have died so far this year from gunshot wounds. In both cases, the shoe fits for some people, and not others. Some of us choose not to apply the actions of a few to an entire religion or nation.
  10. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) The guy was on the federal bench. I think that's related to politics. I don't get involved in these threads too much, but I wasn't trying to laugh at it or send a message of "take that republicans." I saw references to Kennedy or whatever Clinton was involved with back in Arkansas when Cheney shot the reporter. I took it as a message aimed at Republicans, and/or a comparison to Kennedy's incident. And either way, I still don't see why it matters to politics that some federal judge was faulted in an unfortunate accident. Even if he is someone's cousin. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) I've seen posts in the GOP thread regarding events involving muslims and then posting the message. "remember. It's a peacful religion." What does that have to do with politics? Nothing. And you'll see me respond to that sort of B.S. too, though for different reasons (like the fact that its a narrow minded, bigoted and inaccurate bit of sarcasm).
  11. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 01:23 PM) A relative of the Bush family killed a cop. This just makes the Ted Kennedy jokes so MUCH funnier!!! http://www.boston.com/news/local/connectic...ral_judge_dies/ This has zero to do with politics, or with what Ted Kennedy did or didn't do. I'd certainly hope that no one would think any differently of anyone involved because of this, let alone this person's cousin. Why even post this in here?
  12. I don't get the low grades you guys are giving for some of the bullpen guys (MacDougal and Thornton were pretty darn good), and the bench (who mostly did quite well). So here are my bullpen and bench grades... Jenks B- MacDougal B Thornton B+ Riske C- Cotts D- McCarthy C*** (I think some of his failures were due to his being in the bullpen at all) Ozuna B+ Gload A- Cintron B Mack B*** (you cannot blame him for being put in CF every third game - that's on Ozzie) Alomar D+ (would be an F, if not for his work with the staff)
  13. QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 12:18 PM) I can't remember the last time we had a gubernatorial candidate that was worth their salt. I seem to remember liking Jim Edgar, in some ways. Thing with Illinois is, the state Congress has tended to hold sway more than any governor (at least since Thompson).
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) Yes, but first of all, there's no way in hell 98% of those folks would have voted for a Democrat anyway, and secondly, how many of them would vote in a Democratic primary? I think if you ran the same poll against some other Dem candidate, the number is way lower for "definitely not". 40% of the country is not absolute, die-hard for one party or the other. That number is smaller. Anyone else the Dems put up might get 10-20% or more of the GOP vote - Clinton would be lucky to get 5%. As for the Dem primary, in some states, you can vote in both or even choose which one to vote in. If one GOP candidate is winning far and away, some GOP'ers will vote in the Dem primary. Hard to say what they might do.
  15. You mean clueless and the creep? I know more than one person who have already decided to vote for the Green Party candidate for Governor. Neither one of these candidates are worth a damn. Its a shame too, because Illinois used to be semi-progressive and innovative as states go in a lot of ways until recently. The state house is still pretty solid, but there are some monster agencies like IDOT that need a shake up so we can pay for schools. Illinois education has been falling for a decade or more.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) I'm certainly still not ready to say that for one simple reason: As George W. Bush has proven in 2 elections straight, money still determines everything in politics, and Hillary is simply going to have orders of magnitude more money than anyone else in that race. Hilary has a few X-factors effecting her that no one else has. Therefore, I don't think conventional wisdom necessarily plays out in her case. The one number that I can't get past is that, before he campaign has even officially begun, 40% of the country already knows they "definitely" won't vote for her.
  17. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 22, 2006 -> 08:15 PM) You're right. She had to wait... I don't know because I'm not in NY, is she saying the same thing this term? Probably not. The Democrat list is going to be brutal this time, I expect a lot of infighting but Hillary is a clear front runner. The Republicans are bumbling idiots, at least at this point, for 2008. 2006. I actually like the Democrat list at this point... just not the current front-runners. Clinton/Kerry/Edwards are all pretty brutal. But I like some of the others, like Bayh, Richardson and Obama, for example. I don't see Hilary as the front-runner. I saw a poll recently that said some large part of the country, something like half, already are "sure" they would vote for her. No way she gets the nod.
  18. Already a thread on this one, I think: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=55072
  19. In WWII, the units would have been segregated. So, you wouldn't have seen the occasional black soldier. It would have been a whole unit, or none. And since I assume this film isn't covering the ENTIRE battlefield, and is instead focusing on one or a few units (which would 99.6% likely have been all white), including the flag raisers... then it seems to me there is no problem here. Or am I missing something?
  20. How about... the WHOLE first sentence is excellent. I'll go with that one for 500, Alex.
  21. If these allegations are true, then add a big one to the list of reasons I dislike that man intensely. Of course, we are talking about the KGB here. It may or may not be true.
  22. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 02:43 PM) http://elections.us.reuters.com/top/news/usnN20250933.html This is certainly good news for other states who are trying to get the same thing done and strikes a pretty hard blow against voter fraud. As long as AZ has some way to give out free ID's, I am 100% OK with this. Just as long as we aren't charging for a right.
  23. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 02:13 PM) You mean like this? There is a difference between making fun of some random, non-existing person and insulting some real person here on the board. I could care less at this point if anyone labels someone else "leftist". Its just a lame attempt to antagonize others. Nuke, you make some great points. You might even get some great discussion out of them here if you didn't coat them in layers of sarcasm, hyper-polarity and absolute dismissal of others' views via cartoonish exaggeration. Oh, and, you don't finish it. We (the admins and moderators) do. This thread is going nowhere. Closed.
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 08:34 AM) Dow opened up over the 12,000 level... lets see if it holds. It didn't yesterday, but it did today. Closed at 12,011. First time ever close over 12k. What I really want to see though, is the S&P get back over the 2000 levels. The S&P is a somewhat better indicator, I think, of overall business financial strength. Its at 1366 right now, and I believe the all time hish is around 1500 or so.
  25. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 05:12 PM) exactly... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_bomb I am having a hard time believing this particular Wikipedia entry. Chernobyl killed a lot of people, and further, it maimed many more. How is it that the article can say many people weren't effected 5 years later? And furthermore, wouldn't the effective damage of a dirty bomb depend on how much and what type of radioactive material was used to blanket the explosive device? I recall reading years back that the Soviets had toyed with putting cobalt "jackets" on nukes. The first test they performed resulted in an area of Novaya Zemlya that is now devoid of virtually all life, and will be for some time. That was a nuke of course, but still, I am skeptical. I am no expert at all, mind you. I just have serious doubts about this particular entry. Maybe someone who knows a little more can clarify for me.
