  1. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 07:40 AM) From Ozzie's comments, it appears the White Sox have inquired about Hunter. And he was too expensive.
  2. Good news. I am actually not sure if Kap is serious with his post - and I am equally unsure if I agree. When I saw this on the news this morning at the gym, one of the first things to come to mind was that Onion article just after 9/11. The one where the terrorists were in Hell, enduring graphically-decribed atrocities, and wondering aloud where their 70 virgins were. I pictured Zarqawi in the same place. And I'm a little embarrased to say I enjoyed it.
  3. QUOTE(whitesoxin @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 06:26 PM) Read my original post. You are putting words in my mouth. I gave my experiences with the situation, then asked if the others here agreed with Rock that it was a choice or did they think it was innate? You have taken this way too far because clearly I was telling of my experiences, never did I claim that it is all people's reasoning. Don't read between the lines. I just don't see how anyone could logically believe that. Look, I normally am not this snarky. Even here in Buster, I am usually at least fairly respectful of others' opinions, even if I disagree with them. But there are two subjects that have come up in here in the last few months where there is a significant slice of the posters believe something that is just mind-boggling to me. This is one of them - thinking that people can choose who they are attracted to. The other is the idea that Islam is, in itself, evil, as are all of its followers. In both cases, I just can't understand how intelligent people could believe that. So on that note, I will bow out of this discussion, lest I go further down this path.
  4. QUOTE(whitesoxin @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 05:33 PM) I've seen an instance of it, so I am not embarassed for thinking that. Not every situation is the same, and it is the reason that some people do it. It really is not an ignorant comment because I have seen it happen to people I know. Was it your attempt to further illustrate my point? Because you did a pretty good job of it. An instance? OK, if we are talking about the possibility that the occasional person would choose to do something rebelious to get attention, then sure. I am sure that has happened on occasion. But the idea that 10% (or more) of the population chooses a life of ridicule and hardship, so that they can get attention, is just assinine on its face.
  5. QUOTE(henry wiggins @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 01:04 PM) Panic: defined by the late sportswriter Leonard Koppett as "the abandonment of percentage moves in the face of disaster." :headshake For those who were screaming for his head two weeks into the season, I'd agree that was panic. But here in mid-June, saying he may need to be sent down soon if he can't stay above .150, is pretty reasonable if you ask me. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) He has a few bad plays in one inning of one game and now he looks confused in the OF? I totally disagree with that. I should have added the word "LATELY". Sorry. And its a few games, not one inning. But he was certainly looking quite good until late May or so (I missed the games the last week of May, though).
  6. QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 01:02 PM) I want to make sure I understand the theories being posted in this thread. People want to replace a rookie CF, who is great defensively but is unproven against major-league hitting with another rookie, who is new to playing CF and is also unproven against major-league hitting. Umm You really think its that simple? Anderson has lost his mental strength. Look at him. His defense, once stellar, is now looking confused. He is hitting less than a lot of pitchers. He isn't just a struggling rookie - he is a MIGHTILY struggling rookie, who if he continues down this road, will no longer be helping his career by staying at the ML level. He needs to reset and restart at AAA.
  7. QUOTE(henry wiggins @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 01:01 PM) Second this. Too bad he can't become a major-league center-fielder in 15 days, that would solve two problems at once. Well, Politte is a better athlete than the average pitcher... Nah.
  8. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 12:55 PM) The only problem with that is Mack is only a corner OF, Ozuna is an infielder and Gload is a firstbaseman. That's an OF that's barely 3 deep. I think the assumption here is that Mack can play CF (to some extent). Your OF depth chart would be: LF: Pods, Ozuna, Gload CF: Mack, Pods RF: Dye, Gload, Ozuna Not the prettiest defensive OF ever, but works in terms of depth. Or, if Sweeney is indeed capable... LF: Pods, Mack, Ozuna CF: Sweeney, Pods, Mack RF: Dye, Mack, Gload Or something like that.
  9. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) who gets the call up? Lopez.
  10. QUOTE(pcullotta @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 12:24 PM) I think it would have to be an outfielder. If we sent down Anderson and brought up a pitcher, we would have only 2 natural outfielders on this team. I was just trying to illustrate my point that I don't see how anyone can be for sending Anderson down but against bringing Sweeney up to replace him. I don't see any other outfielder in our system that we would want to bring up. Meh, with Ozuna as a 4th OF and Gload 5th, the team would be fine. You don't really need 6 deep in the OF.
  11. QUOTE(pcullotta @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 12:01 PM) My only question to all who say send Anderson down (which I agree with) is who do we bring up to take his roster spot? Javy Lopez. Or, if his CF play is reasonably, Sweeney.
  12. I'll just finish with a prediction of what will go down: Anderson to AAA Mack starts in CF (plays there about 2/3 of games) Ozuna goes from 5th OF to 4th OF, gets more playing time (hot bat) When Mack sits, Pods plays CF, and Ozuna plays LF Ozuna also becomes backup 3B again Ozzie calls up yet another reliever from minors, probably Lopez Only question is when. I'll say with some confidence that, barring Anderson suddenly figuring it out, this will happen before the end of June. Probably in the next week or two. EDIT: This is short term. Later this year, look for a trade, or Sweeney in CF.
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 11:43 AM) Its too late for that in a way. Taxes are based on marital status. Divorces are proceded over by the courts. Adoptions are decided partially by martial status etc. Probably. Divorces can still be proceeded over by courts, even if there isn't a recognized marriage in the law - it would just become a civil suit for ownership under the same guidelines. But the marriage stuff just makes it more complicated, and you end up being penalized for being married.
  14. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 11:11 AM) He has been pretty bad of late, hell his batting average is down 25 points since May 28th and 42 points since May 15th. But one thing Pods IS doing this year better than last, even in his slump, is taking walks. At least, it appears that way.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 11:01 AM) Wow. That is just all kinds of wrong.
  16. I still think Mack is better than Pods for CF.
  17. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 11:01 AM) Well, Sweeney is primarily a RF and has just this year begun to play some CF, after a few weeks out there he tweaked his hammy landing him on the DL for a good amount of time. He was just recently reactivated and as noted before he's now playing more in RF and hardly at all in CF. It sounds pretty telling to me but I guess it could be looked at a few different ways. I kind of wish I had seen him play CF a bit. If he has only played a little bit out there, he could be pretty good or really, really bad. Hard to tell without seeing him. Has anyone here actually watched him play CF this year?
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 11:03 AM) I think we'll try Pods in CF, and Ozuna in LF. Ah. I thought you said the other way around. That makes a bit more sense.
  19. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 11:00 AM) The best thing that could happen for Anderson is to be sent back to the minors. He's not going to get enough at-bats at the MLB level to get in a rhythm. He's absolutely clueless at the plate, and facing mediocre pitching in the minors might help him get his confidence back up. I'm going to make the prediction that on Wednesday, Pods and Ozuna will be in LF/CF. Ozuna in CF?! Over Mack? No. Mack isn't too good out there, but he is a world better than Ozuna defensively. I would think more likely Mack starts in CF, or maybe even Pods, and Ozuna becomes the backup-OF like Mack was.
  20. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 10:53 AM) Sending BA down is not only good for the team, but also good for HIM. The kid is embarassing himself out there right now and you never want to see that happen. I know he comes across as fun and confident, but he's still a kid and if left out there too long to rot, he might never come out of it. As someone else said, we might survive a week or two without him. If our pitching solidifies and our O clicks with RISP, we should be ok. He doesn't look like he is having fun at all, lately. Looks like he is lost, and unhappy. Who knows the reality, of course, but he looks to me like a man beaten.
  21. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) The Sox aren't going to bring Sweeney up to play CF. Jerry Owens is hitting .220. He's not coming. Last I checked, the Sox don't have locks on the entire contents of their stalls in the clubhouse, so Rivera isn't coming, and they aren't going to bring a guy from AA who will be just as bad as Anderson offensively, while giving you less defense. Like someone said before, its either Mack, Ozuna, or Pods in CF or a trade, and I don't think anyone's looking to do KW any favors. What is your reason for not bringing up Sweeney? At this point in his career, it seems likely he'd come up in the fall on the 40-man callup anyway. So the clock may not be too big an issue (maybe by a year, if you think he isn't up until 2007). If the guy can play reasonably good D in CF (at least on par with Mack, hopefully a bit better), then I think its a good idea.
  22. QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 10:47 AM) I highly doubt that Sweeney will be a more productive offensive player than Mackowiak at this point in his career. Possibly not. But Mack is important to this team as a backup OF all around, and even 3B/1B as needed. He could spell Sweeney here and there. The arb clock is important too though. But heck, he'd probably ready next year anyway, right?
  23. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 10:39 AM) Well, he had a hamstring injury which kept him out 10 days or so, and after that he's been playing mostly RF. Not sure what that means but I can say this much ... whoever the White Sox have in the minor leagues playing CF is vastly inferior to Anderson defensively. Even with the occasional brain cramps like this past Sunday. True, but I am thinking perhaps: Sweeney D > Mack D and Sweeney O >>> Mack O If those are true, then he may be a good option. If they are not, nevermind. But its a thought.
  24. A few 2008 prez candidates and their votes: Brownback (R-KS) Yea Warner (R-VA) Yea Bayh (D-IN) Nay Biden (D-DE) Nay McCain (R-AZ) Nay Feingold (D-WI) Nay Lieberman (D-CT) Nay
  25. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 10:33 AM) Ruben Rivera or Sweeney, from what I remember How is Sweeney doing in CF? I'd consider him a serious option.
