  1. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/c...1,7884747.story I read this in today's Trib. It makes me ill. To me, this is yet another example of the conservative religious movement in this country trying to place their values on the entire country. I find this trend disturbing and, frankly, Unamerican. I sometimes feel we are in the midst of some sort of modern version of the Red Scare of the 50's. Its sickening. Some of those books are classics, and they speak volumes about American culture. You aren't supposed to agree with everything you read! Learning means being challenged. God forbid your 17 year old child figure out that masterbation exists. Heresy!
  2. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ May 24, 2006 -> 09:31 AM) If its school sponsored speech, if the administration schedules it and encourages it, its establishment. If its sponatneous, it's exercising your first amendment rights. Why is this so complicated? ^^^^^^^^^^ And that right there is the bottom line on this. Thank you, Rex.
  3. Wrong date in thread subtitle. GO SOX ANYWAY!!! SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 24, 2006 -> 08:12 AM) Now the question would become, would they fund the enforcement of this law. It has been illegal to be in the US forever, but there are no penalties, so it is worthless. This has been an issue for law enforcement in this country for a long, long time. The idea is always brought up that fines or penalties could be increased, to fund further enforcement. But what actually happens is, fins and penalties are increased, but the money goes elsewhere. I fear this will be the case here as well.
  5. Whomever was making the managing decisions last night, they kicked a**! Good calls on the pinch hitters, great call on the squeeze.
  6. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ May 23, 2006 -> 12:11 AM) Wrong, he did say Zambrano was the best pitcher the sox have faced so far this season. I am sure he said that, which is why I was really surprised. I think perhaps you misheard him. But whatever. In any case, as I stated, he does have some of the best stuff in baseball. He just lacks the stuff between his ears.
  7. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ May 22, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) During the game yesterday Hawk said that Zambrano was the best pitcher the sox have faced this season... In no way am I hating on Zambrano because he is a good pitcher with great stuff, but didn't we just get dominated by former Cy Young winner Johan Santana? Lol and he didn't mention Santana. Just wanted to get that out of my system... I watched the game, and what I recall Hawk saying is that Zambrano has some of the best "stuff" in all of baseball. And he is right. He didn't say he was the best PITCHER the Sox have faced. Those are different things. Zambrano COULD be one of the great pitchers in the game, except that he happens to be a mental box of rocks with an out of control temper.
  8. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 22, 2006 -> 12:55 PM) Yes sir, the government is literally almost 100 percent corrupt extremist bureaucrats, regardless of party. And voting for change means nothing since most people just vote along party lines and ignore the candidates anyways. Until we see some honesty and moderation in both parties, things won't change though, and I think things are a LONG way from changing. Which is why the voting public (and non-voting public) are just as responsible for this situation, if not more so, than the politicians themselves.
  9. I'd like to note here that I know more than one person currently in the military who do NOT think highly of Rumsfeld, or Franks for that matter. This does not constitute any sort of quorum of course, but I get the impression it isn't an unusual feeling among the troops.
  10. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 22, 2006 -> 08:39 AM) Not sure about the timing. The movie they aired originally came out last September. Movie?
  11. Speaking of Sunday night Fox... did anyone else catch the Bartman Wrigley gag? Interesting timing.
  12. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 21, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) Good, I hope he misses a month or more. I wish injury and bad luck on that team and their fans after their embarassing display of class this weekend. I know eye for an eye is a bit childish, but in this case I will follow it. Um... Hill and Barrett can go to hell, but the rest of the Cubs team and the majority of fans I have spoken to were pretty good about the whole thing. Seems a but classless to me to wish injury on someone, even if some of his teammates are a***oles.
  13. I must concur that DJ did a pretty darn good job today. He really does pretty well away from Hawk.
  14. Government and marriage of any kind should never be in the same sentence. Let alone the Constitution. Our government, state and federal, has no business in the field of marriage or any other personal relationship.
  15. Here is a thought for the day on this. Mr. Hayden, the current nominee to head up the CIA, said today that the eavesdropping program(s) were legal (unclear which ones he was referring to). What I thought was interesting was, the guy is there being questioned, in his full dress military uniform - stars, bars and boards. Given the touchiness of this subject, if Bush was trying to ease fears about this nomination, wouldn't it have been smart o have him there in a business suit, instead of a uniform? I mean, if I am wary of the government spying on me, and I look on TV and see the new CIA director is a military general, that is NOT going to make me feel better. It will in fact make me feel worse. Just seems like a poor marketing decision.
  16. QUOTE(SouthSidePride05 @ May 18, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) I don't understand why people have a problem with the idea of chanting "1908". Chants are what brings the energy up, and it gets the crowd to an electric atmosphere. I hate it when the crowd sits back, doesn't chant, and only goes wild if the Sox do something great. The Sox are the freakin World Champs, let's give them some love back, get off our asses, and go wild from the first pitch. Why not? If I was a player, I sure would appreciate it. And I hate the fact that some Sox fans are saying this series is gonna feel flat; every series in '06 should be an electrifying experience. Let's be as loud as the Old Chicago Stadium during a blackhawks playoff game. How is 1908 a cheer for the Sox? The crowd will be in it, as they always are. That can be done by being a fan and cheering for the Sox, not by being a doofus. Lest we all forget, until last year, we were 1917. Chanting 1908 over and over again just makes you look petty.
  17. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ May 17, 2006 -> 08:02 PM) I think I read that what he really said was "roll it" meaning roll the drink cart down the aisle I am NOT a conspiracist, but I would think that the damage to the pentagon would have been a little bigger from a commercial airliner, the hole in the building wasn't even as wide as the plane Actually, it was a heck of a lot wider than the plane. From what I know, the plane came in with its wings almost vertical, so the width of the hole would only be a bit larger than the fuselage and empanage (spelling butchered on both I'm sure), which it was.
  18. QUOTE(bmags @ May 17, 2006 -> 05:58 PM) i just got back from running, to a hard division of bright blue skys and the most ominously dark looking clouds with lightning cutting all through them...i hope there are no tornados about... I just got caught in a hail storm walking home from the train. Took shelter in a parking ramp. Dime size hail. Nothing disastrous, but loud and painful. That was around 5:30pm near the Clybourn Metra station. The cell looked to be headed south towards downtown at that time.
  19. QUOTE(Texsox @ May 17, 2006 -> 02:53 PM) I like a balanced schedule and interleague takes away from that. The Mets know every year they will have a battle with the Yankees, the Cubs know they will face a top team in the Sox. Houston will have an easier time with Kap's backyard team, the Rangers. I liked the theoretical debates with cluelessCub fans. Actually beating them isn't as much fun. And over time, the dominant teams change. In case everyone forgot, the Yankees went through quite a bit of suckdom in the 80's. And the Royals were a contender during that same time. The "balanced schedule" thing evens out over time.
  20. Senate just passed a bill. Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060517/ap_on_.../immigration_81 I'm OK with most of it, but I'm really not happy about the wall (for all the reasons I have stated previously). The rest of it, on first glance, looks OK.
  21. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 17, 2006 -> 02:23 PM) OK, that's pretty damn funny.
  22. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 17, 2006 -> 02:05 PM) Only problem I have with this is Bonds didn't get hurt. 99.99 percent of the time I'm agianst stuff like this, but I wish he'd have hit Bonds in the face. Bonds made his own bed by being a cheating asshole and hopefully he continues to get hell for it....from the fans, the media, and now maybe even the players. If Barry Bonds were on the Sox, I'd still hate him and would have a very hard time with rooting for my own team. While i agree with the last sentence, the rest of this post was unnecessary and probably over the line. You wish he got hit in the face?! QUOTE(Soxbadger @ May 17, 2006 -> 02:13 PM) Note that is past tense, as there is absolutely no proof Bonds is cheating this year. And voila, this year, he sucks! I just wish they'd stop walking him since he's obviously not himself anymore.
  23. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ May 17, 2006 -> 01:21 PM) I don't know why so many are so down on interleague play--some of the coolest series last year were IL (Dodgers!). The Rockies series was a blast for us, and San Diego, too. This year we get the Cards for a classic I-57 series which could easily have been the World Series last year. I love it. I-55. I-57 gets you to Champaign and southern Illinois. But I agree, Interleague games are a good thing.
  24. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ May 17, 2006 -> 12:38 PM) They are heading for a world of hurt. Their fuel hedges are expiring, their fleet is rapidly aging and I guess they're due for a round of labor negotiations. And I read the other day that their cost structure on many routes is no longer the lowest. Frontier, SW's rival in the Denver market, has lower costs on most routes. I think saying they are headed for a world of hurt may be an exaggeration, though. They are still very smart and very agile as a company, and they could increase their fares a bit and not lose much business. I think this assigned seats things is an attempt to broaden their market share in a customer-centric fashion, instead of city/market-centric, due in part to exactly what you are talking about. They'll still come out OK.
  25. QUOTE(Beltin @ May 17, 2006 -> 12:07 PM) It is a major distraction at best and interleague play has lost its luster. I know it is probably here to stay, but I much prefer playing the AL all season over dealing with the NL and all the hassles of interleague play. I know ownership likes the sellouts with the Cubs but I think spread out over the course of a season, extra games with other top teams from the AL will make up the difference from those 3 games. I especially think they should cut all the intercity BS back to a three game series that alternates each year. hassles? distraction? What are you talking about? Are interleague games somehow logistically more difficult? Are the teams in another country or something? These games are fun. We get to see teams play that wouldn't have before. They are no more/less meaningful than games against AL West or East teams, to me. Plus the rivalry series are fun for the fans. Given that interleague play is, what, 20 games a year per team? I really only see upside to it.
