Complete and total Democratic hypocrasy

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2006 -> 09:25 AM) All thought it is a fair request, I would still love to see the same respect paid to the religious right, and fiscal/small government conservatives... I just wrote a big post doing just that the other day. -
Oh what the heck - no one else has done it yet. My first ever regular season gamethread! I'll be there (Sec 522, Row 1), so let's get the offense and defense rolling again! NUKE CLEVELAND!!!!!

Has anyone "converted" someone to being a SOX fan recently?

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) My wife pretended to have switched allegiances when we first began dating, but now she's 100% Scrub fan. She was just trying to get into my pants. Awesome. -
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 01:34 PM) Actually, its totally constitutional because the conferenced bill goes back up for approval to both houses. OK, then I agree. I missed/forgot that part about the review vote (I think I knew at one time). Too much space taken up in my brain by Sox stuff.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 11:27 AM) So, back when the House and the Senate were debating the most recent funding bill for the Iraq debacle, both the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed amendments to the bills which would prevent the Administration from spending any of the money to build "Permanent military bases" in Iraq. So in other words, that amendment had the support of majorities of both houses of Congress. And then...the 2 bills went to a Republican controlled conference committee to reconcile the differences between the 2 bills. If you can't figure out where this story is going...You haven't paid attention to these Republicans. Yeah, we don't want permanent bases...but no, you can't have that in writing. That could probably be contested as Unconstitutional. If the Prez signs it, it means he signed a bill that was materially different than what either house passed.

state sponsored rasism and segregation?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) Here's an LATimes update on that little school. There's an investigation started into KABC's allegations, but honestly, it may not be able to go anywhere...according to the charter, that school is basically allowed to run itself as its own school district, so unless the KABC person can actually prove assault charges (which you'll note, they have not filed), there may be nothing anyone can do, since by definition, charter schools are outside the government and therefore the government only has limited oversight ability. However, the school's charter is up for review next year. Point of clarification - FULLY PRIVATE charter schools are outside the government. But, if charter schools pick up contracts as public schools (which happens from time to time), that changes the picture. -

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 09:38 AM) Chicago NewsMedia Watch 6/9/06 The SOX again are not able to gain any ground on the 5th place and falling Cubs in terms of media coverage in Chicago. Despite Winning the World Series in 2005, its first title in 88 years, the White Sox INEXPLICABLY find themselves lagging far behind in Media Coverage to a team that, is currently in 5th place, last season finished in 4th place, has ZERO 90-win seasons since 1990 (1998 doesnt count-163 games), has only THREE 90-win seasons since 1950, and hasnt won anything of significance since the Roosevelt administration Chicago Tribune: 5 cub stories 4 sox stories Chicago SunTimes: 4 cub stories 5 sox stories Standings as of Friday June 9th, 2006 Priviledged, Undeserving, Media Owned, 5th place currently Cubs 554 Underdog, Unrecognized, Media Ignored, WS Champs 05 SOX 458 By my count, Trib had 5 articles for each team. Dead even. Hangar, no one will take you rants seriously if both your tone AND your data are skewed and lacking in objectivity. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 08:45 AM) Oh ... you mean the Coulter rules. Pretty much, yeah. And in truth, this was an actual Congressman, so it SHOULD be taken more seriously than some wacko talking head like Coulter. But, this guy is clearly just as idiotic as Coulter. Which creates a bit of a black eye for the Dems. But I am still pretty sure most of the Dems are not that dumb.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 07:08 AM) Killing Zarqawi "a stunt" I guess it was only a matter of time before this started to come out... So... Pete Stark is an idiot. And? I only see one Dem saying something dumb. The others quoted are simply putting this in the proper perspective - that this is a tiny step in a long battle - and they are right. Let's now apply Mr. Stark's quote to the whole party.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 05:59 PM) IMO, you missed the key group...the big-business folks, who don't give a rats ass about social conservative causes or about smaller government, but only want to line their pockets and don't care who pays for it. I suppose I'd have put big business as a fog over the whole DC grid.

QUOTE(rudylaw @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 03:42 PM) I don't think classy is a word I would use for Ozzie I would say he has respect for the game. And I would say he is a great player manager but I would not rate him as a great in game manager just yet. Agreed on all counts.

QUOTE(Princess Dye @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) these are two different statements: 1) his form looks good 2) his problem is all mental i dont know if people here are crossing those up or what, but it's not necessarily a mental problem when you've just been called up from the minors and are seeing MLB sliders for the first time. what you need is to see more of them. but that said, some time in the minors could be the best thing, especially since we have needs elsewhere right now. His form, if you mean hitting form, doesn't look that good to me. He has various, changing hitches in his swing and his stride, his timing is clearly off, and his head moves around way too much.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 02:42 PM) That is ABSOLUTELY NOT why the Republicans will lose seats in November, if they do. They will lose seats because they are becoming Democrat pussies. I'll just leave it at that. I find this post ABSOLUTELY obnoxious. I actually think the GOP in Congress is, on the whole, a lot less "puss" than their Democrat counterparts. I think that the Republicans instead are suffering from a great rift, as I've mentioned before - social conservatives in one corner, small government conservatives in the other. And so they end up ineffectual. Having a Republican President who is just awful is the third leg of the trifecta. Add them together, pepper liberally (pun intended) with some corruption and smarminess, and you have your 2006 Congressional Republicans.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 12:57 PM) This kind of stuff is her claim to fame -- throwing s*** at a wall and seeing what sticks...even if it is devoid of facts, logic and reason. Kind of like a Jay Mariotti of the politico set. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) You can't find a middle ground AND stick to the Geneva convention. That, by definition, is impossible. Even you sat the nation-state mentality won't work. War between nation-states is what the Geneva convention addresses. I was referring specifically to our treatment of prisoners and detainees. Should have clarified.
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 10:39 AM) This is a case where there we have to find an appropriate middle ground. We aren't dealing with a sovereign nation that has to answer to world opinion. On the other hand, we are exactly that. Our enemy plays by no rules, yet we have to play by rules. We can't let them keep beheading us without striking back, yet we can't cross a line that puts us in the same light. Do I think we should be sticking to the Geneva convention ver batim? No! Do I think we should resort to maiming and killing detainees? No! This is not an army we are fighting, it's a gang of thugs. There's a middle ground somewhere that we have to find. A place where we can be effective in gathering intelligence needed to protect the homeland and advance toward winning the war on terror, yet a place where we can still maintain our national dignity. This ain't black and white. I think we can achieve that middle ground and still follow the Geneva conventions. We can be tough without caving to anger. Its tough - tougher than the road this Administration has chosen - but it can be done. it includes acknowledging our mistakes, and trying to actually change the things that make so many Middle Easterners so angry. But it also includes raids like the one that got Zarqawi, and an unabated push to arrest or kill as many terrorists as we can find. I do agree with you, though, that we cannot go into this blindly thinking we can use nation-state mentality. Won't work. These are thugs, no question about it. But like common criminals in a city like Chicago, if you want to reduce crime, you have to crack down on criminals AND address the things that create those criminals to begin with (poverty, crappy schools, infrastructure, health care, governmental corruption). And you have to play by a set of rules, even when they don't.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 10:20 AM) Just please give him a chance against RHP before we send him down. He has had more ABs against RHP (62) than LHP (58). Not a huge sample size by any means, though. Honestly, i think his struggles are not mechanical as much as mental. I am not sure what facing more RHP's will do.

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 09:55 AM) JIM, You are correct. Kind of. I transposed the numbers for cub/sox, but the MAIN TOTALS are still correct. I cleared them up. However, if you wouldve looked a little harder at my numbers, you wouldve NOTICED that the numbers were transposed because as I said, the TOTALS ARE STILL CORRECT. someone sounds like their nitpicking here. Lunacy? West is that you? Daver? Say man, you call it inferiority, I call it a bias. This isnt a "conspiracy" anymore, because Ive PROVEN BEYOND a doubt that their is a Media Bias against the SOX. You dont see this apparently, because my guess is you DONT want to see it. Thats fine if you dont want to look. But certainly calling me a lunatic, when I have stats to back up my theories doesnt make true smoking crack statements No. It isnt a "pretty big difference" because the TOTALS ARE STILL THE SAME. Q: IS there a bias in the Media Bias Study? Hangar18: YES, because im out to slam the Chicago Media for their obsession with everything cub. Your number transposition and questionable categorizations aside... let's assume your totals are indeed correct. That means there are about 25% more Cubs articles than Sox articles (over what time period I do not know). Here is something else to consider - whether we like it or not, there are still more Cubs fans than Sox fans in this town. Even more so before last year. So wouldn't it be in the media's best interest to have a few more articles about the Cubs than the Sox? That isn't bias - its business. And that isn't really a huge difference anyway. Its not as if there are 3 articles for every 1 - its 5 for every 4, pretty darn close to the same. -
Link: http://www.alternet.org/story/37193/ I am not sure if this belongs here, or in SLaM, or Buster. Admins' choice. But its quite a story, and I didn't see it elsewhere. I'm all for finding upstanding citizens as players. But this, to me, is inappropriate, and a stupid decision business-wise. Is their losing not enough to alienate fans? Now you want to offend whole swaths of your fanbase too???

I wouldn't be too concerned with Shoota. I noticed there was a wave of bannings over on WSI (they must have mentioned the word "Cubs" too many times or something), and so we are seeing guys like Shoota and Hangar over here now. Shoota seems a tad bitter.

QUOTE(samclemens @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 09:11 AM) among other requirements, the geneva convention requires that: - soldiers where uniforms - soldiers do not kill civilians sorry, i dont think you should be able to hide behind a law you willfully violate like that. the geneva convention doesnt apply to terrorists captured abroad. oh, and also, they arent american citizens. hence, no rights. you have to be part of the "collective community" of the country (i believe that was the term the supreme court used ages ago) to afford it's rights, a.k.a. be in the country. The argument that we shouldn't have to follow the requirements because someone else didn't is pretty childish, no? What happened to this country standing up for what is right, even if it isn't convenient?

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 08:59 AM) Long term I think the Tigers may POTENTIALLY have the better pitching of the 2. Verlander, Bonderman, Zumaya and Miller should all be building blocks for that organization. But there's no doubt, Cleveland has the better nucleus with their hitters. But they'll need the likes of Jeremy Sowers to succeed in the majors or they'll need to keep dipping into the FA market for SP's. As for this season, I'd still be 50-50. Johnson and Byrd are weaknesses in that rotation, and no matter how the Tribe hit, they'll need to least pitch better than what they have so far. I agree on the 50-50 for this season. Detroit will fall back at some point, and the Indians will get hot... but Clevelend just doesn't look as good this year as last (as was apparent with their offseason moves).

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 09:06 AM) Harold Reynolds foolishly said that Cintron is filling that black hole the Sox have in CF. It was a nice mistake on his part. Oh, he thought Cintron already WAS the centerfielder? That guy is a dolt.
-
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 08:48 AM) You were watching BBTN, weren't you? No, I don't even know what BBTN stands for. Is that Baseball Tonight? Didn't see it. Did someone on ESPN suggest it?
-
OK, I'm going to throw an idea out here for CF. Might be a little nuts. But worth a shot. Does anyone think Cintron could play CF?
