QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) Ok then, no Marriotti suspension. Good. I wouldn't count on that just yet.

I feel like I accidentally started a fight between two people I don't even know. Weird.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 02:23 PM) If we are going to have a minimum wage, it should be indexed to inflation with an increase or decrease automatically every year. Hell its good enough for Congress, the Vice President, and the Supreme Court, why isn't good enough for everyone else? They also do it with things like SSI payments, disability benefits etc. ^^^^^^^^ The lawmakers do too much "hard-coding" in their laws, as would be said in the software set. Not enough dynamic change built into the law.

Jeez. I was just pointing out that a "dago/dego" shirt has no sleeves. I guess I should have left this thread alone.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 01:21 PM) No, a-shirt = white-beater...I just don't like that term either so I go with how they're labeled by Hanes and Jockey, and tank top or undershirt seems too broad... Hanes Jockey I've got some Italian blood in me too but I don't think that would make anyone's word more important in this situation. I wasn't referring to importance. I was just correcting you. The term itself is insulting and I don't use it. But I am familiar with it.

North Korea threatens Missile Tests

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 01:16 PM) So you have an intercontinental ballistic missle fueled and ready to launch for a test. And, we're just supposed to sit, watch it happen, smile and say "wooohoooo, you did it, now don't do it again, little boy...???" I do agree that much of Kim Dong (make me) Ill's method is sabre rattling, however, I think it's a lot more problematic because he wouldn't be doing this without the (wink-wink nod nod) assurance from China that it's ok. The wild card in all of this, is indeed, China. China is more than the wildcard - they are the master of their domain. The gravity of the Far East is centered very heavily in China, politically and otherwise. NK is also trying to get their attention - not just the US. I don't think China is saying "its OK", so much as its saying... "And?" -
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 20, 2006 -> 10:35 PM) dego t shirt = a-shirt Kinda derogatory, but I do remember it being the term in the neighborhood for them when I was much younger... No, "dego" shirt = tank top, or undershirt (usually white). Take it from someone who is half Italian.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting it, Minors. I think he started off really well, and made some good points. I agree that the display of ANY non-harmful religious act only offends those who are insecure in their own beliefs. I wish people in this country were more tolerant of the fact that others around them are different. And maybe even enjoy that. But the quote from Anne Graham is just a gussied-up way of making an excuse for things. As soon as you think Katrina was a penalty for removing prayer from schools, you lose the ability to think or act rationally. And further, you ignore real problems and eschew personal responsibility, instead believing God controls all actions. That is when we become lemmings. I'd prefer make decisions and take control of the things I can, and try to make the world better with my own two hands.

I agree. Lots of Cards fans last night, including around us, and they were all great to be at a game with. The only embarrassment was a Sox fan who literally stood yelled the ENTIRE game at the top of his lungs, until his voice started cracking and quite obviously went out around the 6th inning. He was right behind a bunch of Cards fans, who all took it pretty well (they were amused).

Oh great. Now everytime I post about geology or anything conservative I have to watch out for Balta-fications. Just kidding. Nice choice - you deserve it. Congrats, sir.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 20, 2006 -> 03:08 PM) Of course. But seriously, that's why the stories get more outrageous and the claims are worse in nature. Bad, horrific news sells, good and wholesome doesn't. Amen, brother. Keep preaching. -

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 20, 2006 -> 11:53 AM) Yep. And everyone KNOWS that they represent the Repulican spin machine, while the 'MSM' likes to claim neutrality. Therein lies the difference. I think your view of the MSM is skewed. I just don't see the type of widespread material bias that you, or others, do. -

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 20, 2006 -> 09:37 AM) It's more than that. How many "Heroic Soldier" stories have you seen in the media? Do we not have any heroic individuals or squads over there? I'm sure we do, but you'd never know it based on media coverage. The liberal media does not want to glorify anything or anybody associated with the war in any way. Watch some WWII newsreels and see how the media portrayed that war effort, as compared to the current one. Compare the amount of coverage Abu Grahib received to the death of Zarqawi. The coverage is so liberal agenda slanted it's ridiculous. If you can't see it, it's because you don't want to. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 20, 2006 -> 09:43 AM) Yes, so the media needs to stop sensationalizing the bad stuff. It's going to happen. The WWII newsreels were actually designed, intentionally, to keep American positive about the war (and in fact were strictly monitored by the War department). The press in modern times doesn't serve that function, nor should they. When the press starts deciding what is good and bad for the country, they cease to be providers of news, and become propoganda machines. This is a war. The news SHOULD be bad, and it is. If the government wants to promote the positives, it certainly has the resources to do so in many, many ways. And it should. It is their obligation, much like it is the press' obligation to report on the cold, hard facts of the war. Unfortunately, you have the press doing their job here, and the government failing miserably in their role in almost every aspect - marketing included. I see death, and blood, and violence. I also have spoken with numerous folks that were and are over there, and guess what? That is what is there. There is little positive to report. Sure, there are heroic soldier stories, and I would absolutely like to hear them. And I guarantee that if the gov't and the military used their own press assets to promulgate those stories, they'd get out there too. And I'll read them gladly. -

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 19, 2006 -> 06:00 PM) So what if the war were spun the other way? About the 'good things' that are happening over there... what would you say then? Of COURSE it's all bad news over there, when you have the liberal media supporting the calls for the liberal congressman saying cut and run, change course, etc. Um... I think maybe the reason there is so much bad news is that... IT'S A WAR! -

New Orleans out of control.......
NorthSideSox72 replied to NUKE_CLEVELAND's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 19, 2006 -> 04:44 PM) http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/06/19/neworlean...g.ap/index.html My only question is where the hell is the NOPD during all this? 1. NOPD is and has long been the most corrupt, underfunded and poorly managed PD of any major city in the U.S. 2. NOPD lost a lot of officers during Katrina (some abandoned, some were fired or suspended for various causes), and I doubt they have been able to replenish. 3. NO doesn't look like its "out of control", it looks like there was a big multiple-homicide that Nagin and others are using as an excuse to get more forces and more attention to their plight. Which, honestly, I don't blame them for (in this case). 4. NO was previously one of the highest crime cities anyway, so this sort of thing should not be a huge shock to anyone. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 02:02 PM) Because he's using splits and HRs and RBIs aren't going to be all that useful when talking about American League pitchers (with the exception of Vazquez). Yeah, I wondered if any of them had ever even hit any. Looks like just Vazquez.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:49 PM) How exactly is a .233 BA and a .281 OBP in April not a slump? Or maybe his 53 point free fall in BA since May 16 isn't a slump. I know he's not that good but that's just pathetic hitting. He sucked in April and he's been struggling since mid May which is when his BA began to freefall. That's actually more than 2/3 of the season. His freefall in the last month is a serious slump. No doubt. He was mediocre in April (though I think he started the first two weeks at like .067, then got hot the 2nd half of April). So, I am pretty sure that offensively, he sucked for 2 weeks, rocked for 5, and has sucked for 4 since then. I guess that is a 6/11 slump ratio. But whatever. He's in a slump. He is still the leadoff guy, and I think its way too early to talk about making any sort of change. Some better consistency would be good from the guy, but he is still getting on base. Once his numbers on the year start really getting ugly (which they will if he hits .136 for another month or more), then its time to talk about reducing his playing time.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:42 PM) I'm just saying, that's where you confused him. OK. In the future, I'll use the Kalapse method for displaying offensive numbers, if that is what most people expect. Since I'm not one to post stats very often, it won't come up much anyway.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) Um, actually when grading a leadoff man the last stat you look at is OPS, all you really care about is if he's getting hits and walks, SLG% is irrelevant making OPS a pretty meaningless stat for a guy hitting first. His OBP is mediocre, it was last year too, just because it's near what he did last season does not make it good. He's been in a slump for 2/3 of the season now also. OBP is key, like I said. And he is around .350 while in a slump. It was .400 earlier this year. And he hasn't been in a slump for 2/3 of the year. If he was in a slump, say a .136 BA, for 2/3 of the year, that would mean he was hitting .478 the other third of the year to get you a .250 BA that he has (using approximations). I don't think he was THAT hot in May.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:38 PM) When you type out splits you usually go ba/obp/slg/ops I labeled my columns, I figured that would suffice. I can't really predict what everyone expects. Besides... slugging pct for a pitcher didn't seem worth even writing down...
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:36 PM) His only positive so far on the year is that he's walking more but the fact that he's stealing 75% of the time (average SB% for someone of his skill set) is not really a huge positive, it's more of an indictment as to how bad he was at stealing bases last year, the same goes for his OBP which as Cap'n pointed out is ranked 9th out of 14 leadoff men in the AL, in other words it's mediocre. He hit .233 in April, .318 in May and now .136 in June that's a horrible trend and it's left him with a .247 batting average which is just pathetic for a leadoff man. The fact that his defense appears to have gotten worse is not helping matters either, the guy gets some of the most pathetic jumps on balls then takes bad routes to get there and misplays the ball once it gets to him. His horrid arm is just making him look even worse, he's possibly the worst defensive OF in baseball right now and when combining htat with his mediocre offensive numbers I'm not really sure why anyone is wondering why he's catching s*** for his play. Hey, fixed that for ya. Batting average for a leadoff man is not terribly relevant. OBP, and maybe OPS, are better measures, and he is right in line with last year on those (a bit higher on OPS, a bit lower on OBP). And that is when he is in the midst of a slump. Offensively, the guy is just fine for now. He'll get hot again and his numbers will be well above last year. Now defense is another matter. He needs a lot of work out there - he does sometimes look like he has regressed.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:00 PM) I want to see Jenks hit. But then again I don't. If the game is out of hand and he is just getting in innings? Sure, I'd go for that.
