  1. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 06:39 PM) My gut tells me the MLB is trying to keep it under raps so that the public still buys into the fact there is in fact only one baseball team in Chicago. That's like saying Coca Cola wants to keep Diet Coke under wraps so that the public thinks there is only one soda in town. It's all the same company! MLB benefits if as many teams as possible draw as much attention and fans as possible, and that means both teams drawing well, not one. That all said, I do see a pattern developing with the Sox not getting some awards we may have deserved. But I think that's due more to lack of national media awareness (by choice or otherwise) of our team than anything else. And laziness on the part of the voting writers to actually do their homework.
  2. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 06:13 PM) stop being a homer.... Maggz hit .317 with a .380 OBP the year b4 his injury with an OPS of .926. Konerko had a lower avg, obp, and ops this season and thats with a career high OPS and OBP. Maggz had an OPS of .900 plus for 4 seasons in a row while last year was Konerko's first. From 2000 to today: Leaving out his lousy 2003, PK has hit in the .280 to .305 range, OBP in the .350 to .375 range, OPS in the .850 to .910 range since he has been a starter. Leaving out his 2004/2005 partial seasons where he had injuries, Maggs has hit in the .300-.320 range, OBP in the .350 to .380 range, and OPS in the .915-.980 range. He's definitely a better hitter, but not by a ton. And PK is a better defender, relatively, but Maggs has speed. If Maggs was known to be 100% healthy, the Sox would probably have offered significantly more than the 5/70 they tendered (if I recall correctly). Like I said, Maggs is better, but not by a lot. Don't discount defense and clubhouse presence, they are important too. If they offered Maggs 5/70, and that was with some health questions, then I am defintely OK with PK at 5/60-65 or so.
  3. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 05:40 PM) They offered 5 years to Maggz b4 his injury..... and b4 that injury Maggz was a much better player than Konerko. I don't know that he was that much better. A better athlete, absolutely. But if you look at team contribution, they aren't that far apart. Maggs probably was averaging more like .300-.310 as opposed to .270-.280, but PK has more power. They are both strong defenders at their positions, and in fact, I'd say PK may be a better defensive 1b than Maggs a defensive RF. I also never got the impression that Maggs did anything at all in the clubhouse, good or bad. PK, I think, is a good presence in there. Maggs does have speed, though, and PK... well, you know. At best, Maggs was maybe slightly more valuable, if at all. They're very close in value, IMHO.
  4. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 04:07 PM) So did we find out if this is the"official" one or not? I'm still confused on that. Looking at the MLB site, there is no mention of an executive of the year among the EOY awards. Just not there. But someone mentioned another one in this thread, the BWAA. Not sure what that is (Baseball Writers Association of A**holes?). EDIT: Also, Kalapse metioned IRRC. Don't know what that is either (International Red-sox Racketeering Conspiracy?).
  5. QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 12:47 PM) Paul Konerko is gone. He wants 6-7 years, and the Sox will only go four. I would think if they could agree to go 5, then things would be good to go, but KW is stating he will absolutely not go more than 4 years. Things are looking bad for PK to be back. PK's AGENT says he wants 6 or 7 years. A SOURCE around the GM meetings says PK will be offered 4 years. These are starting points - this is going to be a negotiation, as it always is in these scenarios. 5 years is still right in the middle, so it's definitely a possibility, until KW says something concrete. No need to panic yet, one way or the other.
  6. For those who mentioned Jim Thome as a possibility for the Sox, to replace Konerko and/or Thomas... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051108/ap_on_...enezuela_urbina It looks like the Phillies will be in even more need of bullpen help now, and we do have some relievers that are tradeable (Marte, Hermanson, Vizcaino). Could make things interesting.
  7. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) They already did. Ozzie won. AL Manager of the year will be announced on Wednesday, per MLB. It doesn't look like MLB has any "official" executive of the year award to give out.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 04:17 PM) He should not have been eligible. Anyone with professional major league expereince, should not be considered a rookie. maybe the MLB could use the NHLs age rule to circumvent the problems? I tend to agree that he probably shouldn't be eligible, but the age thing is tricky. You could have a 30 year old rookie who spent 10 years out of baseball, or you could have a 22 year old who spent 4 years playing in Japan. I'd say it might be better to have MLB decide a player's rookie-eligible status based on whether or not they played in a recognized professional league previously (and do so WELL BEFORE the end of the season, preferably as soon as opening day rosters are announced). Although, even that gets fuzzy. If Japanese major leagues count as professional play, why not some of he Latin leagues? Which ones? Someone would have to make those tough calls.
  9. QUOTE(Frank the Tank 35 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 03:41 PM) Huston Street wins it by a wide margin over Robinson Cano, Jonny Gomes, and Gooch. Tadahito did get 5 first place votes (out of 23) but only got one second place vote and two third place votes. I can't really say I'm surprised. I think those unusually-weighted vote numbers are telling. Of those who thought he should even be considered, they voted mostly for first place. If not, no vote at all. It's kind of a tough call: he's a rookie by status, but he is a veteran professional baseball player. I'm honestly not sure how I'd vote.
  10. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 03:26 PM) Anyone see that crap on ESPN last night. What the hell was that??? ESPN is so damn bias it is sick. Could you elaborate, please?
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 12:32 PM) That hasn't stopped any company in this country from giving those executives $20 million raises. Very true! But that doesn't make it smart or practical. Just trying to make sure we understand the actual financial situation.
  12. QUOTE(greg775 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 12:16 AM) I agree, except I guarantee you he would "include Konerko" if he was given the money. If Reinsdorf doesn't give him a similar offer as the Angels after Paulie giving him that ball ... he is truly an ingrate. I'm just saying the one poster wanted to dump Paulie and give Giles only two mill less. That is stupid. Pay the extra couple million, espeicaly when Forbes just said our franchise was worth some astronomical figure. It's all monopoly money. OK, I hope Paulie is back, but I have to point something out here. What a business or operating unit is worth in sale value has almost ZERO to do with how much money they have to spend. The Sox may be worth $300 million, but if they are only breaking even or even losing money (which some MLB teams are, though not the Sox), then they aren't in a position to just throw free cash at someone. The important numbers are revenue, cost and operating profit. Here is an example. Right now, United Airlines is worth many hundreds of millions of dollars, just because of the gate rights and flying stock they own. Does that mean they have the cash to spend an extra $20 million on another executive, when they are losing hundreds of millions a year? It just doesn't work that way.
  13. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:52 PM) Who knows... I'd really like to see a bench consisting of Harris / Ozuna / Gload / Widger / Anderson (if Rowand isn't traded) -- it'd be a helluva lot better than the 2005 bench. I like that bench too. Perez is too pricey at a million plus a year (1 mill in 2005) for a backup outfielder of his caliber. And that combo covers all the positions on the field.
  14. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:43 PM) You are the only one who has asked me. Not "people". Secondly, I know this because I follow this team, and I know that Gload is hated by the org, expecially KW and Ozzie. Its the same reason why they didnt bring him up to play this year, and gave him no chances. They flat out dont like him, anyone who follows this team is privy to this information. Take this post, copy it, learn it. Really? Because there are a few people on this very thread who seem to think he'll be on the roster. You still never answered my question. I've followed the Sox quite a bit, and I recall only a small incident. Therefore, I believe Gload is likely to be on the 2006 roster, unless some big trade or FA moves make him unnecessary. If you know a specific reason otherwise, please, enlighten me. I really do want to know. If Thomas is healthy enough to hit (which I hope), I like the idea of Gload spelling him at DH and spelling Konerko (who I also hope is back) at 1B.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:36 PM) Q- Seriously, tell me honestly, do you think the org would EVER let Ross Gload have a spot on the big league squad? You keep saying this, and people have asked you whey this is so absolute to you. Seriously, what is the history here that some of us don't know? Is there something other than Gload asking for more playing time? Or him being upset about his own error? And still: Gload/Thomas >>> Everett Gload/Anderson > Everett
  16. QUOTE(WinningUgly85 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:12 PM) I know this is being discussed in other threads but today is the deadline isn't it? When do we hear if Frank Thomas will be with the white sox in '06? There's a big fat thread with a red folder that's all about Thomas' contract situation. If you read it, you'll be as up to date as everyone else here.
  17. QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 04:37 PM) Looked around and didn't see this Geez, Perry doesn't have us in the playoffs next season..shouldn't people wait till we see who's stayin and leavin for the Indians and Sox before makin predictions? http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5050632 Some of the hated sports writers (hated here) are eggers-on - just trying to get people's goat, make them mad. Others just emphatically go where the wind takes them, making as much noise as possible on the way. This guy, well... he's just not very bright. Read some of his other columns and see. He writes like the sports columnist at a sub-standard high school newpaper.
  18. QUOTE(3E8 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 04:03 PM) http://www.keepmyfile.com/download/7fef0f155270 Nice - I appreciate it! Hey wait... how come Leo Daigle isn't on this list?! He'll be pulling down 3 Mill, minimum.
  19. QUOTE(3E8 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) Time to update my salary tracker. We're at $55.425M (including buyouts) currently. Is this salary tracker somewhere on this site, or elsewhere that we can view it? I've seen the end-of-year list, but a version that has been updated would be great. Future editions too.
  20. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:27 PM) I've been pondering the same questions. I hope they continue to have atleast one half price night a week. Also, it would be nice if they had the same post season ticket offers for people who purchase multiple game plans. If you look at the "Season Tickets Benefits" page on the whitesox.com site, you can see what post-season tickets are available for each type of season ticket plan. In short, full seasons get rights to tickets for all games, split seasons get all ALDS, and 1 each at ALCS and WS, and the Ozzie plan gets you "at least 1 ALDS".
  21. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 05:51 PM) okay, maybe I should take off the rose colored glasses and put down the pipe but, damn, it's nice to romanticize this sort of thing I'll be ecstatic, and surprised, if FT can come back healthy at all. Seems other people feel the same. Hoping he'll be able to play 1B in 2006 is like... someone this time last year expecting the Sox to win the World Series.
  22. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) Seriously, I'm still waiting to hear exactly what it was he said that turned this whole organization against him. The only thing I remember hearing was him b****ing after he made that error in a game against K.C. when he said "I only play every x days, I've got to make that play." or something to that effect. Myself as well. Anyone remember what the deal was? I just heard about one small incident, and I never got the impression it was a huge deal.
  23. QUOTE(Wanne @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 04:52 PM) The Official Ross Gload Bandwagon Oh hell, I am the bandwagon at this point. Now people think I would rather have Gload than Konerko. And I couldn't even fit in that thing.
  24. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 04:28 PM) Jesus finally, I thought I was taking crazy pills. If your posts had said this, it might have been clear what you were getting at. I have heard some of the press about Gload complaining for more time. That's the X factor. But I got the impression it was an isolated tantrum from a competitive player who wanted a shot. If he turns out to be an attitude problem, then take my idea and put it in the cylindrical file cabinet. No need to put a cancer in the clubhouse. I just didn't get that impression.
